Chapter 1 - Amara
I had all but skipped down the stairs within my house. Or at least as quietly as skipping could allow. I felt as light as air! Filled with anticipation . . . I quickly pulled the door back, and glanced back and forth along the street outside my family home. I ensured there was not a soul to be seen before I stepped outside. I did not want to have our nosey neighbors reporting back to my Mum or Dad, let alone to the pack Alpha. The last thing I needed was pack gossip. I mean, the sky was already dark, and I knew that me being out alone at this hour would raise questions. Ridiculous really, given that we were werewolves. We were meant to be out at night!
Pulling the door closed behind me, I rushed along the path that ran adjacent to my home, toward the large forest which formed part of our packland’s rural grounds. The thing was, there were numerous streets to pass before I reached the treeline, and each of those streets was lit with streetlights, and plenty more nosey neighbors ready to rat me in to my family. So I had to be as quiet as I could. Nobody could know about this...
My heart felt like it was in my mouth, not just out of nerves but filled with anticipation. Wyatt, the son of our pack Alpha, and a childhood friend of mine had asked me to meet him. After months of flirting . . . growing ever closer, and making me wonder if he might be interested . . . Wyatt asked me to meet him. Alone.
There was no denying that Wyatt was much desired among the she-wolves within pack. He was handsome. Not to mention he was the upcoming Alpha. But it was different for me. I was not fan-girling over him. He was part of the group of friends I had grown up with. A close-knit group of us, which included my twin brother Archer. We were always together. Wyatt had been an ongoing presence within my life for as long as I could remember.
Meaning I had been there in the front row as he grew into being the handsome upcoming Alpha he was. And to see all the many she-wolves he had swooning after him. And the fact he took advantage of that position too. He was a ladies' man . . . but he had reassured me on so many occasions over recent years as a spark seemed to have flickered, that they were merely a distraction. And I had been inclined to believe him.
That spark only seemed to grow. A spark, that neither one of us had been able to ignore. Perhaps it was that naivety of being young, or maybe fate was already beginning to take its planned path; I did not know. But there had been something there between Wyatt and I, I was sure of it. Something we had succumbed to on a handful of occasions in secret when we found a moment alone.
A momentary touch of the hand. A stolen, yet passionate kiss here . . . a loaded glance there . . . messages. So many messages that I knew my brother, and likely my father would go crazy about if they were to discover them. Intimate discussions. Deep and meaningful conversations too. And, those moments only built over time. To the point that we had reached.
Just as I had laid in my bed, ready to reach for my phone for our nightly conversation via video call my movement was halted my a mindlink. To my surprise, Wyatt had mindlinked me, asking me to meet him at one of our pack's old stone outposts. A small stone building sitting out in the forest that was regularly used by our warriors when on border patrol. Yet I wondered if Wyatt had other plans for it tonight . . .
It was hard not to have my mind work over time at why he had suggested such a meet-up, especially at this hour when we would not be disturbed. But, I knew that I did not want to keep him waiting, just as much as I did not want to be caught. So, in a hurry, my legs carried me quicker over the familiar paths toward the treeline. The moon was shining bright tonight, making me shiver beneath her power. This route to the forest was one we regularly took on our pack run, yet tonight the pathways lay empty. I was alone within the darkness. Waiting for the moment I think I had been waiting for, for so long.
I could see the treeline in the not too far distance. It did not take long for me to catch sight of him. Wyatt. Wyatt stood upon the treeline. He had already arrived, and he was seemingly waiting for me. He leaned confidently against one of the trees staring off into the distance. Every bit the heart throb . . . my heart felt like it skipped a beat.
Everything about that boy screamed young Alpha now he had gained his wolf. He seemed to change almost overnight. His body language was altering. He was so full of self-confidence. Self-awareness. With the training he was set to undertake, along with the guidance of his father, he was set to be a powerful Alpha. And it seemed that he may want me . . .
My heart fluttered in anticipation. Wyatt had already gained his wolf. Did that mean he knew something that I did not? A wave of nausea passed over me, while excitement rushed through my body. A strange combination, but one that intrigued me. Was that why Wyatt wanted to see me? He wanted to tell me he and I were fated? That I was to be his Luna?
