The effects of Beep’s castigations did not last for long. Jason did little more than turn an aggrieved face to Beep with an expression both sanctimonious and threatening. But when Emily showed up, Beep turned most of his attention to her. In fact, since the first morning Beep saw Emily Lipton, his enthusiasm for trips to the school bus improved.
“I got a divorce,” she admitted boldly. “I lost my job when Dr. Boyle retired, at least temporarily. I couldn’t wait around for another fresh face out of dental school to pick up the slack. So I threw a dart.” She shrugged. “The first one stuck in the map near Juarez, Mexico. The second one landed on the Outer Banks. So I flipped a coin. That’s how I ended up here.”
Beep dismissed her logic with a laugh.
