CHAPTER 34 The tunnel eventually opened up into an enormous chamber with high, vaulted ceilings supported by a forest of pillars arranged in perfect rows. Rory gaped. The chamber was filled with water, still and black, reflecting the pillars above so that there appeared to be more pillars beneath them and a vaulted floor. They were in the old underground cistern. A pale, silvery light floated about the cistern, bright enough that Rory’s vapour lamp wasn’t needed, and she turned it off. Without the light from the lamp, the cistern became a still world of black, grey, and silver. With some difficulty, Rory knelt on the ground and reached a hand towards the dark water.
