I took an involuntary step back because of what the man said.
Chills spread throughout my body like wildfire as I tried to hide the fear in my eyes. It should have been a harmless statement, but the way he said it and implied it was anything but harmless. It was a warning for me.
He smiled and was about to take a step back when someone spoke from my side, making me jump in surprise.
“Is everything okay, Elle?” Relief spread throughout my entire being when I turned to Emma, who looked at me in concern. “You don’t look so good. Are you tired? Come on, we should go home.”
I’d do anything to go home right now.
