Chapter 2

I didn't think it'd be this easy to get the job at the renowned Jasper Jones house. I was enthused. But I need clarity... "What are the terms of the job, how much will I get paid? Do I have to move in here, or can I show up every morning?" I needed to know if I could keep my job at the supermarket and this one. "That depends on you. You can move in here if you want, or you can come in every morning. Your job starts at 8 am and ends when I have dinner. As for the pay, we'll talk about that later." "Okay. When do you have dinner?" I asked, I needed to know for sure. "It depends. Sometimes, 10 pm, sometimes 1 am, sometimes 2 am, etc." Is he being serious? How was I going to go home at 3 am or 2 am? Heck, how was I going to go home past 10 pm? I saw a smirk form on the corners of his lips he was enjoying my predicament. I did a quick calculation. If I must win this bet, which I want to win, then I must take this job. But then again, taking the job means quitting my old one, and moving into his mansion. The odds are against me, but I know I need to make this decision. "Okay. I'll take the job, and I will move in too." I said after what felt like a decade of thinking and weighing my options. "Good choice." He said. Come, I'll have you introduced to the head chef, and show you to your room." I was going to apply for my leave at the supermarket which has been due for a while now, but I didn't take it because I had nothing to do with that much free time. Now that this has presented itself, I'd take my leave, and use the time for this job. I planned to stay in Jasper's Mansion for a month, win my bet, and go back to my normal life with my job still securely waiting for me. A win-win situation. I smiled in contentment and followed Jasper. Three days ago, I didn't know who Jasper Jones was, I didn't even know someone like him existed until Henry and Drew (my best friends and coworkers) mentioned him over lunch. *Flashback to 3 days ago* "You guys, take a look at this," Henry said, showing us his phone screen."He's so handsome and rich and famous and charming and..." "Okay that's enough," Drew said, cutting Henry off. "He's not that handsome, he's just some egoistic bastard who thinks he can have everything and everyone bows to him,” Drew said with so much hatred in his voice it almost felt like he had had an encounter with the man in the picture in the past. Anyway, I don't think so, he would have told us if there was something like that. “Ummm Drew, the guy I saw in that picture is drop-dead gorgeous,” I said, earning a glare from him which I found weird, but I just shrugged it off. "Who's he anyway?" I asked *Gasps* that came from Henry with eyes as wide as saucers giving me the 'are-you-kidding-me’ look "What? Can't I ask a simple question?" "Do you mean to tell me you don't know the infamous Jasper Jones? CEO of 'D Jones companies Ltd'?" He asked. "No I don't" I casually replied, sipping my soda. "Okay, you must be living under a rock," Henry concluded, going back to his lunch. "Whatever," I said. Drew, what's up? you have been acting weird since you saw that picture of Jasper. What's the problem" I asked concernedly. It's unlike Drew to pick at his food, I don't know what it is, but I feel like something is wrong. "It's nothing, I'm good thank you." "Okay if you say so.” Even though I knew he was lying, I didn't want to push it, especially since he didn't want to talk about it. "Henry, tell me about this Jasper of a guy. What was the post about?" I suddenly became interested in knowing more about the so-called Jasper Jones. "He's the infamous Jasper Jones. He's charming, handsome, good looking and... "Hey, are you gay?" I cut him off with a question I couldn't help but ask, because the last time I checked, he had a girlfriend. "No, I'm not, I have a girlfriend". He said giving me the 'duh' look "So then why are you drooling over this Jasper guy?" "No, I'm not." "Yes, you are." "No, I'm not.” "Yes, you are." "I'm not." "You are." "I'm not." "You are.” "Guys, cool it off, you both are behaving like nine-year-olds. Kim the guy is really rich and famous and I don't think you should waste your lunch break on him cause even if you want him, you can't have him." Drew said. I felt challenged, why would he say that? He makes it sound impossible to get him. "I can have him," I said casually The boys looked at me like I was something from an alien movie and both burst into laughter. "No you can't," Henry said "Let's bet on that then, your salary for a month if I get him, if I don't, I'll do the same. Deal?" "Deal" he replied quickly as if he was sure I wouldn't win the bet. That fuelled my mania. "Drew you in?" I asked "I'll pass on that one, but mind you, your monthly payment isn't something you should play around with. We all know why.” "Don't worry about me, you should be more concerned about Henry here cos I'm going to win the bet," I said giving Henry a sickly sweet smile. "ptff, as if.” That came from Henry. "Lunch is over guys let's go back in." Drew who has always been the parent said. We all stood up and went back to work. While I was working, the only thing on my mind was Jasper Jones. What have I gotten myself into? Why did I even make that deal with Henry? What was I thinking? oh no! This is bad. I can't play with my salary, my family needs it. Well, I guess there is only one way out of this and that's winning the bet. *End of flashback* Now here I was, in Jasper's Mansion, ready to take on employment that I didn't need, just to make sure I won the bet. What a crazy little girl I am.
