Chapter 1
It was a dull day like every other day. Nothing special. Cloudy as always, everything grey and depressing. How I wish I’d never met you.
Alas, a girl’s gotta do what a gal’s gotta do. Off to work.
I love this place, by far the best client ever. Young, alive and bubbling with creativity.
It is a pity we’ll be starting the day off with another staff meeting, an hour of my life I will never get back.
Brand ambassador this, product activation that… and so begins my Friday.
As exciting as this is, I can’t wait to go hide in my little dungeon in the basement. My little haven, and recover from our celebratory impromptu drinks session last night. My Lair.
Thankfully it’s Mika’s turn to speak. I’ve always admired his ability to take control of a room, he exudes confidence, then again, being CEO does tend to have that effect on one’s self-esteem. He’s not bad looking, a bit too short for my liking, but cute none the less. He’s built like someone who works out maybe twice a week. He is 5 foot 4 inches, slightly tanned with brown eyes, black hair in a tapered haircut. Fun, funny, young, good head on his shoulders, and has the ability to talk anyone into doing his bidding. He has been known sell ice to the eskimo. All around nice guy.
Thank goodness he’s done.
Off to my lair I go, hopefully nothing breaks for the next 4 hours cause mama needs some shuteye. Definitely one of the perks of being the “IT Guru”.
I’m finally in my lair. It is not a five star resort, not by any stretch if the imagination, but definitely perfect for me. Down in the basement parking area, fingerprint access so no interruptions. Aircon always on blast to keep my servers and I frosty cool. Long work benches against the 3 walls, my cosy home away from home. All the late 3am projects have made me stock it to comfort, and have made me fall in love with my home away from home.
11h35 need to go help Mika prep for his meeting at 1pm.
It’s always exciting watching the team prep for a pitch. Sure it’s to Mika’s oldest friend, but their creativity knows no bounds. If I had a millions to spend on sponsorships I’d gladly let them help me spend it.
All prepped, everything working as it should, tested, checked and rechecked. I can’t believe I get paid to do this. I love my job!
I have a few more things to wrap up before calling it a day.
Just what I need, Jasmine called me back in because Mika’s having hassles presenting from his laptop. My worst nightmare. Walking into a room where all eyes, will literally be on me. Everyone waiting on me to “fix” the problem. Toughen up girl, you can do this. Breathe, you can do this, you have skills. You are brilliant. I keep saying this to myself as I make my way back upstairs.
“Hey Lex just go in, Mika will be there in a few minutes, he mentioned something about the second screen looking fuzzy and some docs not opening.” I heard Jasmine say from her office
Good ol Jasmine, she’s a sweetheart. In her 30s but doesn’t look a day over 21.
“ Jas, is Lexi fixing my stuff?” I hear Mika ask from a distance.
“Yes Mika, she’s in your office right now.” Jas responds
“On our way...” Mika said shouting from the stairs.
I love working at Activate, it’s the only place I’ve been where people can have whole conversations through walls, doors and floors, no barriers and no judgement. Part of our daily lives at Activate.
“Hey Lex!” said Mika
“Don’t be alarmed, a decrepit, hideous old thing is about to walk into the room. Please don’t let it scare you. Most importantly, do not attempt to photograph it… Flashing lights make it rowdy” Mika said jokingly with a devious smirk on his face
At that moment, I heard a sound that tickled and caressed every cell in my body. A chuckle that suspended time and seemed to control the ebb and flow of my sensuality. A sound that struck and shook my core. For a moment I struggled to catch my breath. My lungs deemed it criminal to take another breath until I saw the being that made that mesmerising sound.
A few seconds later, he walked in to my life…
The beginning of my end…
