Chapter one
The Man in the Shadows Luka Vance lived on the edges of the city, a ghost drifting through the neon glow and concrete jungle. It had been years since he had truly belonged anywhere, but he had learned to exist in the spaces between neither seen nor completely hidden. That was safer. That was the only way he survived. Tonight, the city pulsed with its usual rhythm: distant sirens wailing through the streets, the muffled chatter of people spilling out of bars, and the occasional rumble of passing traffic. To the average person, it was just another night. But to Luka, every sound, every scent, carried meaning. He stepped out of his small mechanic's shop, locking the door behind him. The air was thick with the smell of oil and metal, grounding him in the human world he had chosen to live in. His hands, rough and stained with grease, flexed absently as he adjusted the hood of his jacket. It was a habit now, keeping himself covered, keeping his head down. He had made a life here simple, controlled. A far cry from what he had once been. The pull of the moon whispered beneath his skin, a reminder that he could never truly escape what he was. The full moon was still a week away, but he could already feel its presence, like an itch he couldn’t scratch. The wolf inside him stirred, restless, craving the wild freedom he denied it. But he couldn’t let it win. Not again. Luka inhaled deeply, focusing on the familiar scents of the city. Exhaust fumes, the faint salt of the nearby harbor, the scent of rain that hadn’t yet fallen. And something else, something soft, warm, and unmistakably human. Her. His jaw tightened. Elara Monroe. He didn’t know why he always noticed her, but he did. She had arrived in the neighborhood a few weeks ago, moving into the old bookstore that had been abandoned for years. Since then, she had unknowingly wandered into his path more times than he could count. Sometimes, he saw her through the large front windows of her shop, lost in a book, completely unaware of the world around her. Other times, she passed by his garage, arms full of coffee cups and notebooks, her mind elsewhere. She was curious. Too curious. He had caught her watching him once just for a second, a fleeting glance before she looked away. It wasn’t fear he had seen in her eyes. It was something else. Something more dangerous. Luka had spent years making sure no one paid attention to him. It was how he stayed safe. How he kept them safe. But Elara Monroe had already seen too much. And he had a sinking feeling that she wasn’t the type to let a mystery go. Elara pulled her coat tighter around herself as she walked down the quiet street, the weight of another long day settling in her bones. She had spent most of the afternoon sorting through old books, trying to make sense of the overwhelming number of stories her grandmother had collected. The shop Monroe’s Books had been in her family for decades, a haven for lovers of history, folklore, and forgotten legends. Her grandmother had always believed in things. Elara had never quite understood. Magic. Monsters. Things that lurked in the dark, just out of sight. Elara had grown up rolling her eyes at the stories, convinced that the world was far more ordinary than her grandmother claimed. But ever since she had moved back to the city, she couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe just maybe her grandmother had been right. Especially about him. The mechanic with the sharp eyes and the quiet presence. Luka Vance. He was a mystery wrapped in shadows, and mysteries were something Elara had never been able to resist. She tried to be subtle, to pretend she wasn’t paying attention. But there was something about him, the way he moved, the way he watched everything, as if he were always listening for something no one else could hear. Most people in the neighborhood barely noticed him. He was just a quiet man who worked on cars and kept to himself. But Elara had seen the way others reacted to him, instinctively cautious, as if they sensed something was different. She didn’t believe in monsters. But if she did, she had a feeling Luka Vance would be one. The thought sent a thrill of curiosity through her, mingled with something else, something she wasn’t quite ready to name. Elara took a shortcut through the alley between her shop and the next block. The streets were quieter here, the glow of the streetlights casting long shadows against the worn brick walls. She had walked this way dozens of times before, never once feeling uneasy. But tonight was different. A prickle of awareness ran down her spine, a sensation she couldn’t explain. She wasn’t alone. The realization settled like a weight on her chest. She glanced over her shoulder, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag. Footsteps. Slow. Measured. She wasn’t sure how long they had been following her, but now that she had noticed, she couldn’t be unnoticed. Heart pounding, she quickened her pace. So did they. Panic flared in her throat. She wasn’t the type to scare easily, but instinct screamed at her to run. She reached into her bag, her fingers wrapping around the cold metal of her keys. If she could just A blur of movement. One moment, she was alone. The next, something dark and fast exploded in the shadows. A snarl tore through the night. Elara stumbled back, her breath catching in her throat. A man, no, not a man, had appeared between her and her pursuers. Luka. She barely recognized him. His stance was predatory, his muscles taut with barely restrained violence. The golden glow in his eyes was unnatural, burning like molten amber in the dim light. The two men who had been following her froze. Elara could see the flicker of fear in their expressions. Whatever they had planned, it wasn’t worth facing him. Luka didn’t move. He didn’t have to. The threat in his posture, the silent promise of violence, was enough. The men hesitated only a second longer before they turned and disappeared into the night. Silence settled around them. Elara’s heart was still racing, but for an entirely different reason now. Luka turned to face her, and for the first time, she saw him for what he truly was. Not just a man. Something more. Something dangerous. So mething she could never look away from again. And, for better or worse, she knew this was only the beginning.
