Prologue
Mary held Odin's hands tightly as he escorted her into the garden. Her eyes were closed because he had promised her a surprise.
"Odin, this surprise better be good," Mary said, smiling as he guided her further onto the grass.
"Alright, open your eyes," Odin replied.
Mary flicked her eyelids open. "You bought me another car?" she stated, half-laughing. She wasn't even done driving the Benz he had bought her last week, and here was a brand-new, pink Ferrari.
"I thought you needed a better ride," Odin said with a smirk. "You humans are so slow at getting places." He pulled out a key fob and pressed it into her hand. "Test it out, my love."
"Alright," Mary said. As she reached for the door handle and stepped within three feet of the driver's side, the flush handles automatically popped outward with a soft, mechanical whir.
She pulled the door open. The rich, intoxicating scent of hand-stitched Italian leather and expensive carbon fiber immediately washed over her. Mary slid into the low-slung, body-hugging driver's seat.
The cockpit wrapped around her seamlessly. She dropped the key fob into the designated slot on the sculptural center console and pressed the ignition, allowing the engine to roar to life.
Watching her, Odin felt a familiar pang of sadness. He knew they couldn't be together forever. He was a werewolf, and she was a human. A day would come when he would have to return to his pack and find his true fated mate.
Currently, he was on a mission to kill the traitor who had murdered his mother, but he hadn't expected to fall in love with Mary. He loved her smile, her laugh, and her very presence gave him warmth.
"Do you like it?" Odin asked cheekily.
Mary nodded her head shyly.
"I want you to have the best my money can buy," he added softly.
She smiled as she turned off the engine and stepped out of the car. "I have something important I want to tell you," Mary said, gently caressing her belly.
"What is it?" Odin beckoned her to speak.
"I'm-" She started, but she was suddenly interrupted.
"Alpha Odin! Mary!"
From a distance, an energetic five-year-old Harry ran up to them, drawing their attention. "See what I can do now!"
A loud, cracking sound echoed across the garden. The bones in the boy's body stretched, snapping into a rigid, forward-facing block. His fingers shortened, growing thick and blunt, while his legs shifted into thick, curved, midnight-black claws. Within seconds, a beautiful grey wolf stood in his place, his fur the exact shade of his mother's.
"Pups don't usually transform until their early teens," Odin said, astonished as he scooped up the young Harry. "You'll be a very strong wolf one day, and your mother will be proud."
Mary took Harry from Odin's arms and patted the small wolf on the head.
"You were saying something?" Odin urged, turning his attention back to Mary.
"Alpha!" someone called out loudly. "We've found him."
"Update me," Odin commanded as his Beta and an Omega approached them.
"Yes, Alpha. He's at a bar downtown, and if we leave right now, we'll be able to capture him," Norlan, his Beta, reported.
"My father must be growing impatient with me," Odin muttered. "The sooner we cut off this traitor's loose ends, the better we can get back to the pack house. Alright, I'll just gather a few important things before we go."
Odin walked back into the house with Norlan trailing closely behind him.
Left in the garden, Mary carried Harry over to his mother, Sharlon. "He just transformed for the first time," Mary said gently.
Sharlon took her son and rubbed his fur. She felt a twinge of disappointment that she had missed her son's very first transformation, but she was delighted that he was going to be a strong wolf.
As a dutiful Omega of the pack, she had been heavily occupied fighting alongside Alpha Odin. Sooner or later, their Alpha would find his true mate, ascend the throne, and there would be even more duties to attend to.
Sharlon couldn't even remember the last time she had seen her own mate or felt his touch. She knew that once they were back home, they would have to make more pups.
For now, the least she could do before leaving was to guide Harry back into his human form.
"Alright, Harry," Sharlon said to her son. She squatted down, placed him on the ground, and rubbed the scruff of his neck to soothe him. "I want you to close your eyes and think of yourself as a human. Disconnect from your wolf."
Harry's little face twisted in agony as the heavy muzzle collapsed inward. The nasal cavity retreated, the bones of his skull fracturing and knitting back into a rounded, fragile dome.
His jaw snapped shut with a sickening crunch as the vicious ivory fangs dissolved, replaced by the familiar, flat ache of human teeth. The shift left him weak and shivering.
"Now go inside and take a warm bath," Sharlon instructed, gesturing for one of the house servants to carry her son inside. She then turned to Mary, who was still standing near her new car. "Please help me take care of him while I'm away."
Odin and Norlan emerged from the house, dressed and ready for battle.
"Let's head out," Odin said. He turned to Mary, cupping her face and kissing her lips one last time. "We'll be back, my love."
"Love you," Mary whispered, holding his hands tightly.
"Love you too," Odin replied.
With a seamless, practiced motion, Odin and his pack members shifted into their wolf forms and bounded into the sea of trees, disappearing into the shadows of the forest.
Mary stood alone in the driveway. She still hadn't gotten the chance to tell him about their expected baby. She rubbed her stomach and walked back into the empty house.
But days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months.
A year passed, and as time bled away, Odin, his Beta, and his Omega never returned.
