How Can He Be Mine?
Aside from the first time I met Declan, this was the happiest day of my life— of our lives.
Unable to help myself, my hands reached into my bag one more time and held onto the envelope that contained my test results.
From today, Declan and I were going to know what it meant to be parents.
My brows arched slightly as I walked into the house. There was a second car parked outside—a car that I knew all too well.
Just as I stepped in, Declan’s father’s voice echoed through the house.
“I have told you so many times to dump that b***h you married and be with Stella!”
Regardless of how many times I had heard him make statements like that, I still couldn’t help but feel a pang of hurt.
Being married for three years with no kids meant that his family had reached their breaking point. Neither of them liked me from the start, and I was not surprised that they would use this as an opportunity.
“Father, stop. I have told you many times that Daisy is going to remain my wife, regardless of what you say.”
I was closer to the study now.
Mr Ellington scoffed at Declan’s reply.
“If you were married to Stella, getting an invite to Helios Club would not be so hard!”
Helios Club?
Wasn’t that?….
The loud sound of the door banging made me flinch, and I forced a smile as Mr Ellington stood in front of me.
“Oh, you are here?” He said as he stood in front of me, his eyes filled with chilling light.
“Of course, you would only be home by this time. Is this when you should get in?”
I had gotten a little carried away doing window shopping for babies after leaving the hospital, and I hadn’t even realised that it had gotten late.
I gulped. From experience, replying him would only make things messier. It was better to just ignore him and let him leave.
“Even the most simple duty of a wife is something that you are unable to do…”
He leaned in, closing the gap between us, and I stepped back until I could feel my back touch the wall.
“If you don’t leave him, I will make you,” he threatened before walking off.
My heart is thumping against my chest and I have a good mind to call Stefan. If he could perhaps help Declan to get…
“Baby,” Declan called out as he stepped out of the study. He glanced around and let out a sigh.
“Did you meet my dad on the way up?” He asked while wrapping his arms around me.
Somehow, as his arms wrapped around me, every little bit of discomfort I felt from his dad’s words started to fade away, and I allowed myself to soak in his warmth.
“He was just leaving when I came,” I lied. Like I always did.
“What did the doctors say?” Declan asked as he walked me down the stairs.
My brain is struggling between the excitement of the news I’m about to break and breathing.
Seeing how I was struggling to breathe, Declan’s brows raised, and he held my arms for support.
“Is everything fine?”
I nodded hurriedly and pulled out the test report.
“I’m pregnant.”
There’s a sharp, impossible-to-miss change in the air, and Declan’s eyes go from worried to stony cold.
“What did you say, Daisy?”
Something is wrong.
I pulled out the test report and stretched it forward.
“I’m pregnant, Declan. We are going to be parents.”
Declan grabbed the paper, and I saw his eyes move over it quickly. Then he glanced up at me, his blue eyes sharp and cold.
“What have you done, Daisy?” He asked while glaring at me.
What have I done?
“Declan…” I thought he would be happy about this.
We had waited three years for this. So how could he not be happy?
Did he not want kids?
The simple thought gave me chills all over as I realized that I was the one who always brought up the topic of having kids.
A loud bang and the sound of shattering glass pulled me out of my thoughts, and I locked eyes with Declan.
“Is that how badly you wanted a baby? Daisy?”
“You could even open your legs for another man just to get a child?”
“I can’t believe that I judged you wrong all these years.”
Declan took two steps forward, and without thinking, I stepped backwards.
“I will ask you only once, who is the bastard?” His voice is clipped and icy.
But his eyes are the worst.
They are filled with burning rage that makes him look completely from the man I had always known. The man I was in love with.
“Declan…what are you talking about?”
Was there something I didn’t know?
“This is not my child, Daisy, and you better start speaking up about who owns the bastard in your stomach.”
I hold the table behind me for support.
“Declan, how could you call our baby a bastard?” I can feel a teardrop on my cheeks, but I don’t care.
Declan scoffs. “Our baby?”
“Regardless of what my family said, I stood by you. I can’t believe that I would let myself be this blind.”
I pinched myself twice to be sure that this wasn’t a dream.
It had to be right because this was certainly not how this was supposed to go.
This was supposed to be the second happiest night of our lives.
The night when we would finally start our own family.
Yet…
“Declan, I don’t know what anyone has told you, but I swear by the heavens that this child is yours.”
His lips curled up into a sneer.
“I’m sterile, Daisy. How can your bastard be mine?”
Wait, what?
