Chapter 1: The Seat Next To Mine
The first day of senior year at Westbrook High School started exactly the way every school year started—with chaos, noise, and someone already yelling about food.
“WHO STOLE MY BURRITO?!”
The voice echoed through the hallway like a police siren.
That someone, of course, was Jake Thompson—class clown, professional eater, and a guy who treated snacks like national treasures.
“This is a crime,” Jake declared dramatically, holding up his empty lunch bag like a piece of evidence in court. “A betrayal. A tragedy. I demand justice.”
“Jake,” said Emily Carter, adjusting her glasses and sighing like a tired librarian, “it’s 7:38 in the morning. You brought three burritos.”
Jake nodded solemnly.
“And now I have two,” he replied. “That is suffering.”
The hallway burst into laughter.
Standing near the lockers, quietly watching the drama unfold, was Noah Bennett—tall, slightly awkward, and currently trying very hard not to smile.
Noah wasn’t the loudest guy in school.
He wasn’t the toughest.
He wasn’t even the most popular.
But he was known for one thing.
Being hopelessly, painfully, ridiculously in love with his best friend.
And right on cue…
the doors slammed open.
“Out of the way—late genius coming through!”
Heads turned immediately.
Students scattered like pigeons.
And then she appeared.
Lily Anderson.
She rushed into the hallway like a small tornado—messy ponytail, backpack half-open, one sneaker untied, and chewing gum like it personally offended her.
“Morning, losers!” she announced cheerfully.
“Morning, Lily,” several students replied automatically.
Noah felt his heart do the same ridiculous thing it always did when he saw her.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
Not romantic drums.
More like someone aggressively banging pots in the kitchen.
She spotted him instantly.
“Noah!” she shouted.
Before he could react—
SMACK.
She punched his shoulder.
Hard.
“OW!” Noah winced.
“Why are you standing like a statue?” Lily demanded. “Did your brain freeze overnight?”
“I was thinking,” he said defensively.
“That’s suspicious,” she replied.
Jake suddenly appeared beside them, chewing loudly.
“Noah,” he said seriously, “if you die, can I have your lunch?”
“I’m not dying.”
“Selfish,” Jake muttered.
Within minutes, the rest of their friend group gathered like magnets snapping together.
There was:
Ryan Walker — star basketball player, confident but quiet.
Sophie Patel — gossip queen, drama lover, and walking news channel.
Oliver Grant — genius-level smart, permanently stressed, and allergic to stupidity.
Maya Lopez — fashion lover, selfie expert, and social media addict.
Ben Carter — quiet artist who drew cartoons of teachers getting eaten by dinosaurs.
Grace Wilson — class president, rule follower, and professional scolder.
And lurking nearby like villains in a teen movie were the school bullies:
Tyler “Viper” Reed — tall, muscular, and always cracking his knuckles.
Marcus Hill — huge, silent, and terrifying.
Dylan Sharp — skinny, sarcastic, and somehow the most annoying of the three.
Westbrook High School wasn’t really a school.
It was a survival game with homework.
Suddenly—
CRACKLE.
The loudspeaker came to life.
Everyone groaned instantly.
“Good morning, students,” came the voice of Principal Harrison, a man feared by teachers, parents, and possibly wild animals.
“Welcome back to a new academic year.”
Nobody listened.
“Senior students,” he continued, “this is your final year. Work hard, stay focused, and avoid unnecessary drama.”
The entire hallway burst into laughter.
Unnecessary drama was basically the school mascot.
As the crowd started moving toward class, Lily grabbed Noah’s sleeve.
“Walk with me,” she said.
His heart skipped.
“Okay.”
They walked side by side down the hallway.
For a moment, everything felt calm.
Comfortable.
Normal.
Then she spoke.
“You’re nervous,” she said.
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“I’m—”
“You are.”
He sighed.
“Fine. I am.”
She grinned proudly.
“I knew it.”
Noah hesitated.
There was something sitting heavy in his chest.
Something he had already said once before.
Last year.
Flashback — One Year Ago:
Rain poured outside.
They were sitting under the bleachers.
Alone.
Noah’s hands were shaking.
“I like you,” he had said.
Lily blinked.
Then stared at him.
Then blinked again.
“I know,” she replied gently.
His heart sank.
“But I’m not ready for a relationship,” she added.
The words didn’t slam like a door.
They closed slowly.
Quietly.
But firmly.
Back to Present
“Noah?”
Her voice pulled him back.
He realized she was staring at him.
“You went quiet again,” she said.
“Sorry.”
She studied his face.
Then smiled softly.
“You’re still my best friend,” she said.
The words were warm.
But they still hurt.
Because best friend wasn’t the role he wanted.
Just then—
BANG.
A locker slammed.
Tyler “Viper” stepped forward, cracking his knuckles.
“Well, well,” he sneered. “Look who we have here.”
Noah stiffened.
Lily rolled her eyes.
“What do you want, Tyler?” she asked.
Tyler smirked.
“Nothing,” he said. “Just checking if your boyfriend finally grew a backbone.”
The bullies laughed.
Noah swallowed.
Lily stepped forward.
“He’s not my boyfriend,” she said firmly.
Noah’s chest tightened.
Tyler grinned.
“Exactly.”
The hallway went silent.
Then—
SMACK.
Lily punched Tyler’s arm.
Hard.
“Leave him alone,” she snapped.
Even the bullies looked surprised.
Tyler rubbed his arm.
“You’re insane,” he muttered.
“Correct,” she replied proudly.
Later, inside the classroom, students rushed to their seats.
Noah sat down.
And then—
Someone dropped their bag beside him.
He looked up.
Lily.
She smiled.
“Reserved seat,” she said.
His heart started pounding again.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
Then the classroom door opened.
Mr. Daniels walked in.
Behind him…
was someone new.
A boy.
Tall.
Confident.
Handsome.
With the kind of smile that made people sit up straighter.
The room went silent.
“Class,” Mr. Daniels announced, “this is a new student.”
The boy stepped forward calmly.
“My name is Ethan Cole,” he said.
Half the girls gasped.
Sophie whispered immediately:
“He’s hot.”
Maya nodded dramatically.
“Very hot.”
Noah felt something twist in his stomach.
Then Mr. Daniels said the words that changed everything.
“Ethan,” he continued, “you will sit…”
He scanned the room.
Then pointed.
“…next to Lily.”
The classroom erupted.
Noah’s heart dropped straight to the floor.
Ethan walked toward the empty seat beside her.
Smiling.
And Noah suddenly had a terrible feeling.
This year…
was going to change everything.
