34I drove to the other menagerie. Still early and I thought seriously about stopping somewhere for a quick bite but figured I should see how Eph and Catherine were coping as new parents. Catherine's Honda sat in the driveway. I parked and went in. No one on the main floor. Then I heard murmuring upstairs. “Hello?” “Up here, son.” I climbed the steps and found Eph by the second-floor railing. He looked tired and frail but had a bright expression on his face. “It's been a remarkable few days,” he said. “But I'm beat.” I stopped on the landing. “I'm sure you are. How's Catherine and the baby?” “Come see for yourself.” He led me into their bedroom. There, spread out on the bed lay Catherine in sweat pants and a T-shirt, her legs tucked up under her and asleep. I peaked over her shoulder
