Like Lawton, Mac was recovering, but he’d lost part of one lung and would probably have to take a medical retirement from his deputy job. All that could be determined, the report continued, was the mentally disturbed man had done the deed alone, probably under the influence of a combination of drugs, since residues of m*******a, cocaine and hallucinogenics were found in his body during the autopsy. Whatever reasons he had for the deed had died with him. Lawton suspected there was more to it, but he didn’t discuss the report, and Melissa didn’t mention it either. For all practical purposes, the case was closed, though Lawton knew that in some circles, it was yet a matter of concern.
