Cynthia (The Betrayal)

"Mummy! Mummy! I have good news for you", Cynthia shouted as she ran into their two-room apartment. Cynthia was a beautiful 18 year old girl, she was about 5ft tall and had a very fair skin like the Whites. She looked nothing like her parents who were both dark skinned. She heard from her parents that she inherited the traits of her paternal great grandmother who was an American lady. She was the exact copy of her great grandmother and this made her gain love and admiration from her family and neighbors. Being an only daughter in a family of four kids, she was treated like a princess by her parents and siblings. "Mummy! Where are you?", Cynthia asked going towards her mother's room. Anna who was having a nap woke up when she heard her daughter's voice. Cynthia pushed into her mother's room without knocking, she went straight to the bed and sat down shoving a fat brown envelope under her mother's nose. Anna took the envelope from Cynthia,opened it and brought out the letter. Her eyes scanned through the letter as a big smile spread over her face, she turned to Cynthia and engaged her in a bear hug, patting her back. "Congratulations my princess, I knew you would make it,I'm so happy for you." "Thank you Mummy". Later in the day, Anna placed a call to her sister Lily, after exchanging pleasantries,she told her about Cynthia's admission. "Yes Lily,Cynthia got admission into the university of Port Harcourt, she just received her admission letter today." "Really? That's great news, I wish I was there to congratulate her personally. Anyway sister don't worry, I'll see what I can do about her tuition". "Oh my God,thank you so much, Lily, I don't know what I would've done without you. I'm really grateful". "Stop it Sister, you talk as if we're not related,we're sisters after all. I'm returning the kindness you showed me when we were younger, I wouldn't have been successful like this if you hadn't sacrificed yourself for me. I should be the one thanking you for what you did for me.", Lily was choking on her words as she tried to control her emotions, Anna was crying too. Anna and Lily were the only children of their parents, their father died in a car accident and their mother died afterwards of heartbreak, leaving the two girls to themselves. Having no one to take care them, Anna, the eldest had to drop out of school and work many part time jobs to take care of her younger sister. The bond between the two sisters had gotten stronger since then. That night, Anna told her husband about Lily's intentions to help them take care of Cynthia's education. Leonard,Cynthia's father was very happy at the news, he was already having sleepless nights about how to get money for Cynthia's tuition, so the news was a very big relief to him. A week later, Lily gave Anna a call to tell her of her intentions, after exchanging pleasantries, she began; "Sister Anna,I was speaking to one of my friends living in the States and she told me that she needed a girl who'll stay with her in America. I mentioned Cynthia to her and she agreed to take her so I decided to talk to you about it first". "But Cynthia wants to go to college,I don't think......." "Don't worry about that, she'll sponsor Cynthia's education so you don't have to panic". "But I don't think her father will approve of that, you know how crazy she is about her, he wouldn't want her to be separated from him." " I know,but you'll have to convince him to allow her go,she won't live with him forever". "Okay, I'll try to convince him, but are you sure the lady is trustworthy?" "Of course,we've known each other for long, she's not married and she's very wealthy, so she needs someone to stay with her and keep her company". "That's okay, so when is she coming to Nigeria?" "In a few days I think, she'll get everything prepared by then". "Thank you so much Lily" "Don't mention it, it's the least I can do for you. I'll be ready to do more" It took a lot of persuasion for Leonard to agree to sending Cynthia abroad. He was adamant at first but reluctantly agreed after some time. Cynthia, on the other hand could not believe her ears when she was told that she'll be going abroad to study. This was beyond what she bargained for. what she expected.She wasted no time in breaking the news to her friends, they were very happy for her;Cynthia was everybody's favorite. Miss Kate came to Nigeria as promised, she obtained an international passport for Cynthia and proceeded with the preparations to leave with her. The preparations were completed within a week and Cynthia was ready to leave. Before they left, Miss Kate gave Cynthia's parents a huge amount of money to take care of themselves. Cynthia stayed with Miss Kate in Lily's house in Abuja for a few days before they boarded a plane to America.
