Finally, A Job
Kaylie's POV
Bright lights illumined my eyes as I tried to figure out my surroundings wondering where I was but I could not see a thing. I heard echoing voices, a female and a male laughing happily like they are excited to go on a trip. Their laughter comforted me and made me feel safe. " Are you okay in there my angel?" the female voice asked me. It was the most gentle and comforting voice and surprisingly it was very familiar to me. I smiled and tried to reply but I could not find my voice. My tear drop fell. 'Oh God I wish I could stay in this dream forever.' I enjoyed their company for a moment and then my dream turned into a nightmare when I heard the most terrifying shriek followed by a very loud thud then everything stood still.
I opened my eyes looked around to see the familiar haven of my messy room. Don't judge me but I did not have much time to tidy things up lately. I am so busy looking for a job. It is still six in the morning and I have a job interview at nine. I went to the bathroom to do my business pulled my hair into a messy bun and went straight to the kitchen to make breakfast. Still having a heavy heart after my "nightmare" I decided to listen to some music to lift my spirits up. Music is my only company aside from my bestfriend, Lee. She took me in after my Nana passed. Placed my earbuds and pushed the play button, Journey's vocalist entered my ears and I started to sing with him.
Just a small-town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere...
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere
A singer in a smokey room
The smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on, and on, and on
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlight people
Don't stop believin'
Hold on
Streetlight people...
I love this song. It reminds me to be hopeful that someday soon my life would not be as pathetic anymore. Pardon my musings today I blamed it to my "nightmare" a while ago. But anyway life has to move on. After I ate my scrambled eggs and sandwich. I prepared for my interview.
It's still eight when I went out and started to walk towards the venue which is just fifteen minutes away from where we are staying. I gained stares from people passing by. I might really be a head turner today which pretty much unusual for me. Thanks to Lee who helped me with my outfit for this interview.. Wearing a longed sleeved white blouse and a pencil navy blue skirt that reaches just on top of my knees contouring my curves and a three inches black shoes, I strut my way and even swing my hips a little bit more. I placed my hair in a high pony tail. I had a light make up and pink lipstick on. And a black rimmed round spectacles. Although I have contacts I preferred to wear my glasses for this interview thinking that it would impress them. You see I am applying as a PA in a prestigious company in Virginia. I heard that the CEO that would be my boss if ever is a devil. But I don't care I just want to give it a try.
I arrived at the entrance of the most modern tall building in the city. I stepped inside heading towards the front desk and a pretty receptionist smiling warmly at me. 'At least the people here are friendly unexpectedly even having a cold boss' I muttered to myself.
"Hello, my name is Kaylie Smith I have an interview at nine." I smiled. "Oh good morning Ms. Smith. Your interview will be on the 40th floor. They are almost ready for you. Somebody will be there to check you in. Good luck." she smiled again.
"Thank you." I bid farewell to Mia her name by the way as her nameplate states. I was heading to the elevators while searching my bag for the nth time just to check if everything that I need is there not paying attention to where I was heading when I bumped into a wall. 'Great their wall here smells good'. And I dropped my phone, Luckily their floor is carpeted so my phone was good so to speak. I picked it up and started to lash. "Hey watch where you're going!." My voice was a bit irritated. I looked up to see a set of dark brown eyes that could weaken your knees but at the same time emitting a cold aura. He just stepped back and with long strides entered the elevator without glancing back. I was not able to move for a second there. 'Wait a minute what just happened? and who was that arrogant bastard? He even stole my elevator!' I got pissed. "urggh"...
I did not dwell too much of that brown mesmerizing eyed jerk/hottie since I have an interview to focus on. I need this job. The moment the elevators opened and I make my way to the 10th floor. "ding" the elevator opened and I stepped in to another elegant room. A middle aged woman approached me with a smile. "Hello, Ms. Smith" she extend her hand for a handshake. I gaped at her. She looked so beautiful and very elegant and professional. I extended my hands as well and smiled. "Hi nice to meet you.." "I am Claire by the way Rick's PA.. well.. the outgoing one. Please follow me.
We walked towards an oak door with intricate designs on it. Claire knocked twice. " Come in" a cold voice responded. 'Get a grip Kaylie. Calm down... deep breaths.' Following Claire inside I felt so little in this very spacious minimalist themed office. The ceiling to floor windows were made of glass and you could see the magnificent view of the metropolis. There were just two big portraits that seems to be a baroque or a renaissance era art on the walls. I studied a bit of art by the way when I was in college and read them too so maybe that's why I was drawn to them. 'Wow I bet this are original works.' I got out from my reverie when I heard Clair calling my name. "Oh I am sorry." I apologized again and moved closer behind her. "Mr. Rick this is Kaylie Smith." I was in my sweetest smile waiting for the person in front to respond. He is sitting on his chair and his back is to us. There was a tense moment waiting for the boss to face us.
He swiveled his chair and I met yet again the dark brown globes I stared at a while ago. 'Oh my god!! He is the boss. I am doomed.' My insides crying right now, I want to get away!' Although my insides are in turmoil I still managed to be calm looking and smiling at the same time awaiting my judgement.
"Ms. Smith he started. Looking at my eyes. So tell me what made you decide to apply in this position?' I became mute and my brain was frantically looking for a reasonable excuse why I applied here. "uhmm.. I started to stutter... Honestly, I need a job. I applied to so many jobs but they would not hire me since my experience is insufficient. I am desperate. But I guess I will just usher my self out sir... thanks for your time." I started to turn towards the exit dejected and my shoulders a bit droop because of another rejection. "Where do you think your going?" I heard his cold voice resonating in the wide room with just the two of us inside. Claire by the way already left when he turned and face me awhile ago.
"I.. will take my leave sir, I know I did not get the job sir. ehem" I cleared my throat trying to control my self not to cry in front of him. "Who said you were rejected?" He stood up from his thrown and walked towards the white leather couch behind me and sat. He looked like a model from a Vogue magazine men's special edition and his position right now is featured in the "well", the middle page. He placed is outstretched left arm on the arm rest and crossed his legs. He was looking at me waiting for my reply. His face void with emotion. I turned towards him wide eyes. "Do you mean to say I am hired?" Still unable to fathom what is going on. "I tell you what, you have a two weeks probation. Claire will orient you and if I see that you can handle everything then I will hire you. You will work with me and I do not accept any mistakes from you. I need a PA who can meet my demands and everything should be perfectly done for me. No excuses. And call me Mr. Rick at all times. Is that understood?" He stood up and move a bit closer to me staring at me condescendingly. I matched his glare and head my held high. "Absolutely Mr. Rick." I could smell his masculine smell but I did not flinch. I do not want to be intimidated by this demon. He went back to his table when Claire came back. "Claire you know what to do." "Yes, Mr. Rick." With that he went back to work mode like nothing happened and we left his office.
Claire showed me my workspace which is adjacent to the boss's office as expected. "Kaylie this will be our workspace starting tomorrow. All the things you need will be set up for you. You know that our boss is really strict but do not be intimidated by him. He is cold in the outside but he has a kind heart. You'll soon see." 'Honestly, I do not expect to see that.' "Oh" that was the only word I could say to respond to her statement. "So, see you tomorrow then, don't be late."
"Whew" I heaved a sigh of relief when I got out from the building. And could not still process the idea that I got the job. I really want to shout but I stopped myself. I called my only family, my bestfriend Lee. I know she is at work right now but hey this is a big news so this is a reasonable excuse I justified.
"Hello Kayle, how was your interview?"
"I got the job Lee! aaaahhhh!!!" I screamed on my phone
"What?!!! Oh my Gooodddd aaahhhh!!! congratulations Kaylie! This calls for a celebration. Dinner my treat tonight. Okey? "
"Okey. see you then." we hung up.
I walked back home, feeling elated. 'Nana, finally I got a job. I hope you will be proud of me.' I made a silent prayer to my mother. Tears running down my face not caring to the world. I am just so happy right now.
Rick's POV
Sitting on my chair, I could not seem to get her face out of my mind. Her eyes are so beautiful even with her eye glasses on she is like a fresh air that helps me breath. She look like an angel. My angel. 'Wait what am I saying? She's my angel? What's wrong with me?'
I took my phone and dialed a number.
"Kaylie Smith everything about her."
"Got it Sir."
I hung up.
There was a knock on my door. "Come in" I uttered flatly.
"So, I heard you hired a new girl and she is a beauty." Clint said as he sat on the couch placing his feet on the center table. Clint is my right hand but he is also my bestfriend, you could say my only family. We've known each other since we were kids. He owes me his life at some point but I will share it to you next time. Clint an I have similarities in our personality and physical features as well. That's why sometimes when I get bored from all of these responsibilities, I asked him to pretend to be me and attend social gatherings on my stead. He does not complain a bit. He understands my situation more than anyone else. So he is willing to do these things for me. He knows me even more than I know myself. Sometimes that creeps me out but anyway, he is my only brother and I will offer my life for him as well.
"That look in your eyes again, I can tell... going out tonight?" Clint asked with a dreading look in a teasing way.
"Yes. I need a break." Clint chuckled "Are you sure this is not because of that beauty you just hired."
"Oh shut up"
