Chapter 1:The Night Everything Broke
My name is Elara Morgan, and Christmas night destroyed everything I believed about love. The café on Rosewood Street glowed with golden lights, wreaths hanging on the glass doors, laughter floating into the snowy night. Couples sat close together, hands entwined, smiles warm and effortless. I stood outside for a moment, adjusting my coat, my breath fogging the air. I was early. Or so I thought. I pushed the door open, the bell chiming softly above me. My eyes searched instinctively for Daniel Hayes, my boyfriend of three years, the man who promised me forever just two weeks ago. I found him instantly. Daniel wasn’t alone. He stood near the counter, his arm wrapped tightly around a woman I didn’t recognize. She was beautiful in a sharp, polished way long dark hair, red lipstick, confidence dripping from every movement. She laughed, leaning into him. And Daniel, my Daniel, kissed her. The world tilted. My chest tightened so painfully I thought I might collapse right there between the holiday decorations and cheerful music. My hands trembled, numb and useless at my sides. Three years. Every promise. Every plan. Every “I love you.” All lies. Daniel pulled back slightly, his forehead resting against Sienna’s. “I told you I’d end it,” he murmured, not knowing I could hear him. “She was just… comfortable.” Comfortable. I turned before either of them noticed me. I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I didn’t demand answers I already knew. I walked out. The cold air hit me like punishment, snowflakes melting against my burning cheeks. My vision blurred as tears finally spilled, my boots crunching against the icy sidewalk as I walked without direction. Christmas lights blurred into streaks of red and gold. Families passed me, happy and whole. I hugged my coat tighter, my heart breaking open with every step. By the time I realized where I was, the streets had grown quiet. Empty. The city felt abandoned, swallowed by snow and silence. That was when the air changed. A strange warmth brushed against my skin, despite the cold. The night felt heavier charged. I slowed, unease crawling up my spine. Then I heard footsteps behind me. Not rushed. Not hesitant. Controlled. I turned slowly. A man stood beneath a dim streetlight, snow settling on his dark hair and broad shoulders. He was tall dangerously so wearing a black coat that did nothing to hide his powerful build. His face was sharp and devastatingly handsome, but it was his eyes that stole my breath. They glowed gold. Not a reflection. Not a trick of the light. Real. Alive. “Don’t be afraid, Elara Morgan,” he said gently. My heart slammed violently against my ribs. “How do you know my name?” He took a step closer, and instinctively, my body reacted—not with fear, but with heat. A pull deep in my chest tightened painfully, drawing me toward him. “My name is Kael Blackthorn,” he said. “I am the Alpha of the Nightfang Pack.” I stared at him, disbelief mixing with shock. “That’s not funny.” “I’m not joking.” His voice softened, but something wild lurked beneath it. “Your scent awakened tonight. The bond is undeniable.” Snow fell between us, silent witnesses to the impossible. “What are you talking about?” I whispered. Kael stopped an arm’s length away, lowering himself slightly so his glowing eyes met mine. “You are human,” he said, “but fate does not care about boundaries.” My breath shook. “You are my mate, Elara.” The word echoed through my soul, igniting something ancient and terrifying and for the first time since my heart broke, warmth flooded my chest. Christmas night had taken everything from me. But standing before Kael Blackthorn, I knew my life was only just beginning.
