Chapter Twelve: The Note

1872 Words
The note lay on the table like a blade left in open air. Black cloth. Silver crescent cut through the middle. Three words in wet ink. _She is mine._ Elena stared at it. The fire was still burning. Damien’s arm was still around her waist. But the room went cold. Damien went still under her. His arm tightened until her ribs hurt. “Kael,” he said. Elena sat up, pulling the blanket with her. “How did it get in here?” “The same way the feather did,” Damien said. His voice was empty. “Someone is inside.” He was out of bed in a second. Trousers on. Bandage spotting red. He crossed the room and lifted the cloth with two fingers. “Mine,” he said. “Not his.” Within minutes the estate woke. Guards doubled. Corridors searched. Servants questioned. Rowan came from his chambers. Kiera came from the infirmary. The kitchens were lined up. The stables were checked. The armory was checked. The east wing was checked. The cellars were checked twice. The note sat on the Council table. “Inside job,” Rowan said. “No one climbs the wall without a rope. No one enters the Alpha’s chambers without a key.” Damien’s silver eyes moved over them. “Then we find the key.” No one spoke. Elena stood beside him. “If Kael can enter my room, he can enter anyone’s. We burn the cloth. We change the locks. We stop hiding.” Damien looked at her. “Explain.” “If we act afraid, the pack is afraid,” Elena said. “If we act like he already won, he will believe it. We move. Today.” Damien studied her. Then he nodded. “The Luna speaks.” Morning was chaos. Every lock was changed. New guards at every corner. Warriors sent to track scent beyond the north ruins. Kitchens searched. Armory searched. Servant quarters turned over. Cellars checked three times. Damien did not leave Elena’s side. Not once. He ate with her. Trained with her. Walked the walls with her. Sat with her at supplies. Stood behind her with elders. Slept in the chair by her bed. Refused every meeting unless she was there. Warriors noticed. Kitchen girls noticed. Elders noticed. “Alpha does not leave Luna’s side,” one muttered. “He smells like blood and jealousy,” another said. Elena heard. She did not answer. Afternoon. Training yard. Damien watched her spar with Kiera. Arms crossed. Eyes on her only. Elena was faster now. Stronger. She disarmed Kiera twice. “Good,” Damien said. Kiera bowed. “Luna improves.” Damien stepped in. “With me.” Elena’s mouth opened. “Your shoulder—” “Heals,” Damien said. “And I need to know you can fight me if you must.” Wooden swords. He was slower. She was careful. But his eyes were not on the blade. They were on her. “Kael touched you,” he said. “No,” Elena said. “He threatened me.” “He wrote your name,” Damien said. “He claimed you.” Elena stopped. “He does not own me.” Damien dropped his sword. “No. I do.” The yard went quiet. Elena stared. “Excuse me?” Damien crossed to her in two steps. He took her face in both hands. “You are mine, Elena. By bond. By choice. By blood. Not by contract. Not by note.” Elena’s heart was loud. “Then say it.” “I am,” Damien said. He kissed her. In the yard. In front of warriors. Hard. Possessive. Jealous. Elena’s hands came to his chest. She did not push him away. When he pulled back, the yard was silent. “Again,” a young warrior said. Damien looked at Elena. “Say it.” Elena’s cheeks burned. “I am yours. Not his.” Damien nodded once. “Good.” Evening. Study. Leather. Ink. Maps on the table. Elena read Kael’s exile records. “He was brutal,” she said. “He killed pups.” “He was exiled for it,” Damien said. “Now he wants revenge.” Elena looked up. “Why me?” Damien’s hand came to her neck. Thumb on the bandage. “Because hurting you hurts me.” Elena covered his hand. “Then don’t let him.” Damien’s eyes were dark. “I won’t.” Silence. Elena stepped closer. “You were angry today.” “I was afraid,” Damien said. “There is a difference.” Elena rose on her toes and kissed him. Soft. Reassuring. Damien went still. Then his hand came to the back of her head and he answered. Slow. Deep. Warm. His other hand came to her waist. Elena’s fingers curled in his shirt. Maps crumpled under her elbow. Neither cared. They broke apart. Both breathing hard. Damien’s forehead to hers. “If we start, I will not stop.” “I know,” Elena said. “Not until you are marked,” he said. “Not until the bond is done.” Elena looked up. “Then mark me.” Damien’s eyes flared. “Not yet.” “Why?” “Because when I mark you, there is no going back,” Damien said. “And Kael will know. He will come for you with everything.” Elena’s hand on his chest. “Then let him come.” Damien stared. Then he lifted her onto the table. Papers fell. His mouth was on hers again. He broke the kiss to breathe her in. Thumb on her jaw. Slow. Reverent. “You are the only thing that makes this war worth fighting,” he whispered. Elena’s hand to his nape. “Then stay,” she breathed. He stayed. He traced her lower lip with his thumb. “Do you know what you do to me?” Damien asked. Elena shook her head. “You make me want to burn the world down to keep you safe.” She leaned in. “Then keep me.” He did. His forehead rested against hers. “I have never wanted anything the way I want you,” he said. Elena’s breath caught. “Say it again.” Damien’s hands in her hair. “You. Only you.” His mouth found hers again. Gentle this time. Like a promise. Elena’s hands slid to his shoulders. She did not let go. He pulled back enough to look at her. “If anything happens to you, I will not survive it,” he said. Elena’s thumb on his cheek. “Then don’t let anything happen.” Damien nodded. “Never.” --- *Chapter 12: The Note - PART 2/2 = 1,407 words* Later. Night. Elena in his bed. Hair loose. Neck bare. Damien on the edge. Back to her. “You stopped,” Elena said. Damien did not turn. “Because I respect you. And because I want the bond to mean more than fear.” Elena sat up. Hand on his back. “I’m not afraid.” Damien turned. Eyes silver and wild. “I am.” Elena slid closer. “Then be afraid with me.” He looked at her. Then he pulled her into his arms. Door locked. Fire low. He buried his face in her hair. “You smell like moonlight and defiance,” he murmured. Elena smiled into his chest. For once, the estate felt quiet. Safe. His. His fingers combed through her hair. “I have wanted this since the night you stood in my hall with a blade,” he said. Elena’s hand on his chest. “Then stop waiting.” Damien closed his eyes. “I am trying.” His lips brushed her temple. “If I lose you, I lose everything,” he said. Elena’s arms around his neck. “You won’t.” Damien held her tighter. “Promise me.” Elena nodded against him. “I promise.” He pulled back just enough to see her face. “You are mine,” he said. “Say it back.” Elena’s voice was soft. “I am yours.” Damien’s eyes closed. “Good.” He held her like that for a long time. No more words. Just breathing. Just her. Dawn. Elena woke alone. Bed cold. On the pillow, another note. Black cloth. _I will take what is mine._ The estate did not sleep after that. Damien called a full meeting before sunup. Warriors. Elders. Kitchen. Healers. All in the hall. He held up the second note. “This was in the Luna’s bed,” he said. “Kael is inside our walls.” A murmur. “From now on, no one is alone. The Luna is never alone. See a stranger, stop them. See a lie, report it.” Rowan stepped forward. “We search every room. Every corner. Every quarter.” Elena stood beside Damien. She did not hide. “Kael wants fear. We will not give it.” The pack nodded. The search took all day. Nothing. No doors. No tunnels. No traitor. But the estate felt heavier. Elena felt it. Every shadow looked like a man. Every step sounded like Kael. Damien did not let her out of his sight. Night again. Study with Damien. Book in her hands. Hands shaking. Damien closed the book. “Look at me,” he said. Elena looked up. “I will not let him take you,” Damien said. “Not while I breathe.” Elena’s throat hurt. “I believe you.” Damien stood. Pulled her up. “Then come.” Balcony. Cold air. High moon. He stood behind her. Arms around her. “You are safe,” he whispered. “You are mine.” Elena leaned back. “Say it again.” “You are mine,” Damien said. “Not his. Never his.” Elena closed her eyes. Wind in the trees. A wolf howled beyond the wall. Guards changed below. Kiera walked with a lamp. Rowan checked locks. The estate was tense. But Elena was not alone. Damien’s hand found hers on the rail. He did not let go. He lifted her hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles. “If he comes, he goes through me first,” Damien said. Elena turned in his arms. “Then let him try.” Moonlight on her face. Damien’s thumb on her cheek. “You are mine,” he said again. “Always.” His arms tightened around her. “No one will take you from me,” he whispered. Elena leaned into him. “And no one will take you from me.” The night was cold. Their bond was warm. He rested his chin on her head. “We will end this,” he said. Elena’s hand over his. “Together.” Damien nodded. “Together.” He turned her in his arms. “Look at me,” he said again. Elena did. “No matter what happens, remember this. You are mine. And I am yours.” Elena’s voice broke. “Always.” Damien’s forehead to hers. “Always.”
