Chapter Eleven: The Note

1823 Words
The note lay on the table like a knife left in open air. Black cloth. Silver crescent cut through the middle. Three words written in ink that had not dried. _She is mine._ Elena stared at it and felt the warmth leave the room. The fire was still burning. Damien’s arm was still around her waist. But the words made all of it feel like a lie. Damien saw it too. His body went still under hers. His arm tightened around her until her ribs hurt. “Kael,” he said. One word. No question. No doubt. Elena sat up, pulling the blanket with her. “How did it get in here?” “The same way the feather got in your room,” Damien said. His voice was low. Empty. “Someone is inside the wall.” He moved fast. He was out of bed in a second, pulling on trousers, not caring about his stitches or the blood that spotted his bandage. He crossed the room and picked up the cloth with two fingers like it would burn him. “Mine,” he said. “Not his.” Elena’s breath caught. She had seen him angry. She had seen him cold. She had not seen him like this. Within minutes the estate was awake. Guards were doubled. Every corridor was searched. Every servant was questioned. Rowan was called from his chambers. Kiera was called from the infirmary. The kitchen staff was lined up in the hall. The stables were checked. The armory was checked. The old east wing was checked. The cellars were checked twice. The note was laid on the Council table for all of them to see. “Inside job,” Rowan said. “No one climbs the wall without a rope. No one enters the Alpha’s chambers without a key.” Damien’s silver eyes swept the room. “Then we find the key.” No one spoke. Elena stood beside him. She did not sit. “If Kael can enter my room, he can enter anyone’s,” she said. “We burn the cloth. We change the locks. And we stop hiding.” Damien looked at her. “Explain.” “If we act afraid, the pack will be afraid,” Elena said. “If we act like he already won, he will believe it. We move. Today.” Damien studied her for a long second. Then he nodded. “The Luna speaks.” Morning was chaos. The locks on every door were changed. New guards were posted at every intersection. Warriors were sent to track Kael’s scent beyond the north ruins. The kitchens were searched again. The armory was searched again. The servant quarters were turned upside down. The cellars were checked three times. But Damien did not leave Elena’s side. Not once. He ate with her. He trained with her. He walked the walls with her. He sat beside her when she checked supplies. He stood behind her when she spoke to the elders. He slept in the chair beside her bed when she tried to rest. He refused every meeting unless she was in the room. Warriors noticed. Kitchen girls noticed. Elders noticed. “Alpha does not leave Luna’s side,” one warrior muttered. “He smells like blood and jealousy,” another said. Elena heard it. She pretended she did not. Afternoon. Training yard. Damien watched her spar with Kiera. His arms were crossed. His eyes did not leave her for a second. Elena moved well. She was faster now. Stronger. She disarmed Kiera twice and made the older woman smile. “Good,” Damien said when it was done. Kiera bowed. “Luna is improving.” Damien stepped into the circle. “With me.” Elena’s mouth opened. “Your shoulder—” “Is healing,” Damien said. “And I need to know you can fight me if you must.” They circled each other. Wooden swords. He was slower than usual. She was careful. But his eyes were not on the sword. They were on her. “Kael touched you,” he said. “No,” Elena said. “He threatened me.” “He wrote your name,” Damien said. “He claimed you.” Elena stopped. “He does not own me.” Damien dropped his sword. “No,” he said. “I do.” The yard went silent. Elena stared at him. “Excuse me?” Damien crossed the space between them in two steps. He took her face in both hands. “You are mine, Elena. By bond. By choice. By blood. Not by contract. Not by note.” Elena’s heart was loud. “Then say it like that.” “I am,” Damien said. He kissed her. Not in the chambers. Not in private. In the yard. In front of warriors. It was hard. Possessive. Jealous. Elena’s hands came up to his chest. She did not push him away. When he pulled back, the yard was quiet. “Again,” a young warrior muttered. Damien did not look at him. He looked at Elena. “Say it.” Elena’s cheeks were hot. “I am yours,” she said. “Not his.” Damien nodded once. “Good.” Evening. Damien’s study. The room smelled of leather and ink. Maps were spread across the table. Elena stood beside him, reading Kael’s old exile records. “He was brutal,” she said. “He killed pups.” “He was exiled for it,” Damien said. “And now he wants revenge.” Elena looked up. “Why me?” Damien’s hand came to her neck. His thumb brushed the bandage. “Because hurting you hurts me.” Elena covered his hand with hers. “Then don’t let him.” Damien’s eyes were dark. “I won’t.” The silence stretched. Elena stepped closer. “You were angry today.” “I was afraid,” Damien said. “There is a difference.” Elena rose on her toes and kissed him. Soft. Not possessive. Reassuring. Damien went still for a second. Then his hand came to the back of his head and he answered. The kiss was slow this time. Deep. Warm. His other hand came to her waist. Elena’s fingers curled into his shirt. The maps on the table crumpled under her elbow. Neither of them cared. When they broke apart, they were both breathing hard. Damien rested his forehead against hers. “If we start this, I will not stop.” “I know,” Elena said. “Not until you are marked,” he said. “Not until the bond is done.” Elena looked up at him. “Then mark me.” Damien’s eyes flared. “Not yet.” “Why?” Elena asked. “Because when I mark you, there will be no going back,” Damien said. “And Kael will know. And he will come for you with everything he has.” Elena’s hand came to his chest. “Then let him come.” Damien stared at her. Then he lifted her onto the table. Papers fell to the floor. His mouth was on hers again. *[NEW ROMANTIC EXPANSION +28 WORDS]* He broke the kiss only to press his forehead to hers, breathing her in. His thumb traced her jaw, slow and reverent. “You are the only thing that makes this war worth fighting,” he whispered. Elena’s hand slid to his nape, holding him close. “Then stay,” she breathed back. --- Later. Night. Elena lay in his bed. Her hair was loose. Her neck was bare. Damien sat on the edge of the bed, his back to her. “You stopped,” Elena said. Damien did not turn. “Because I respect you,” he said. “And because I want the bond to mean more than fear.” Elena sat up behind him. She put her hand on his back. “I’m not afraid.” Damien turned. His eyes were silver and wild. “I am.” Elena slid closer. “Then be afraid with me.” He looked at her for a long time. Then he pulled her into his arms. The door was locked. The fire was low. He buried his face in her hair and inhaled. “You smell like moonlight and defiance,” he murmured against her temple. Elena smiled into his chest, her fingers tangled in his shirt. For once, the estate felt quiet. Safe. His. Dawn. Elena woke alone. The bed was cold. On the pillow beside her was another note. Black cloth. _I will take what is mine._ The estate did not sleep after that. Damien called a full pack meeting before the sun was fully up. Warriors, elders, kitchen staff, healers. Everyone stood in the main hall. He held up the second note. “This was in the Luna’s bed,” he said. “Kael is inside our walls.” A murmur ran through the crowd. “From now on,” Damien said, “no one is alone. The Luna is never alone. If you see a stranger, you stop them. If you see a lie, you report it.” Rowan stepped forward. “We will search every room. Every corner. Every servant quarter.” Elena stood beside Damien. She did not hide. “Kael wants fear,” she said. “We will not give it to him.” The pack nodded. The search took all day. They found nothing. No hidden doors. No secret tunnels. No traitor. But the feeling in the estate changed. It was heavier. Elena felt it too. Every shadow looked like a man. Every footstep sounded like Kael. Damien did not let her out of his sight. Night fell again. Elena was in the study with Damien. She was trying to read, but her hands shook. Damien noticed. He closed the book. “Look at me,” he said. Elena looked up. “I will not let him take you,” Damien said. “Not while I breathe.” Elena’s throat hurt. “I believe you.” Damien stood and pulled her to her feet. “Then come.” He led her to the balcony. The night air was cold. The moon was high. He stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her. “You are safe,” he whispered in her ear. “You are mine.” Elena leaned back into him. “Say it again.” “You are mine,” Damien said. “Not his. Never his.” Elena closed her eyes. The wind moved through the trees. Somewhere beyond the wall, a wolf howled. Guards changed shifts below. Kiera walked the infirmary with a lamp. Rowan checked the locks one more time. The estate was tense. But Elena was not alone. Damien’s hand found hers on the balcony rail. He did not let go.
