The girl who didn't know
Rain painted the city in silver as Isabella Romano locked the front door of the little café where she had worked since dawn. The streets glistened beneath the neon lights, and the cool evening breeze carried the scent of coffee and wet asphalt.
She tucked a loose strand of dark hair behind her ear and smiled at Mrs. Elena, the café owner.
"Go home before the storm gets worse," the older woman said, handing Isabella a paper bag. "You forgot your dinner."
Isabella laughed softly. "You'd think after three years I'd remember."
"You'd think after three years you'd stop skipping meals."
"I'll work on that."
Mrs. Elena hugged her before disappearing back inside.
For a moment, Isabella simply stood beneath the awning, listening to the rain.
Her life wasn't exciting.
She rented a tiny apartment.
She worked six days a week.
She had no family left.
And yet... she was content.
At least, that's what she told herself.
She reached into her pocket and touched the silver necklace she never removed. It was the only thing she had from before the age of five. Every time she asked about it, the orphanage staff gave the same answer.
"It was around your neck when you were found."
No one knew where it came from.
No one knew who her parents were.
She had stopped asking years ago.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
Curious, she answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a calm male voice said, "Don't go home tonight."
The line went dead.
She frowned.
"A prank?"
She slipped the phone into her bag and started walking.
---
Across the street, a black sedan remained parked with its headlights off.
Inside sat a man dressed in a charcoal suit.
His gray eyes never left Isabella.
"Positive identification?" he asked.
The woman beside him nodded.
"Facial recognition confirms it."
He looked back through the rain-speckled window.
"After twenty-three years..."
His voice was almost a whisper.
"We finally found her."
The woman handed him a thin folder.
On the cover was a photograph of a little girl wearing the same silver necklace.
Below it, in bold letters, were the words:
ISABELLA ROMANO
Status: Missing
He closed the file.
"Prepare the team."
---
Isabella reached her apartment building twenty minutes later.
As she searched her bag for her keys, something felt... wrong.
The hallway was too quiet.
Her elderly neighbor's television wasn't blaring as usual.
The motion sensor light flickered once before going dark.
She unlocked the door.
The apartment was silent.
Too silent.
She stepped inside.
The window above her couch stood open, letting rainwater drip onto the wooden floor.
"I'm sure I closed that..."
Her words faded.
Someone had been there.
The framed photograph on her bookshelf had been moved.
A drawer was slightly open.
The silver necklace around her neck suddenly felt heavier.
Then she noticed it.
An envelope rested neatly on her dining table.
Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, was a single word.
Run.
Her heartbeat quickened.
She backed toward the door.
A floorboard creaked behind her.
Slowly, she turned.
A man dressed in black stood near the kitchen.
His face was hidden beneath a mask.
He raised one gloved hand.
"Miss Romano."
She didn't wait to hear another word.
She ran.
She burst through the apartment door and sprinted down the stairwell.
Footsteps thundered after her.
She reached the street, weaving between startled pedestrians as rain poured from the sky.
A car horn blared.
She narrowly avoided a speeding taxi.
The masked man emerged from the building, still pursuing her.
Then everything changed.
Three black SUVs swept into the street, surrounding the intersection with military precision.
Their doors opened in perfect unison.
Men and women in dark suits stepped out, scanning every rooftop and alley with practiced efficiency.
The masked pursuer froze.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
A final vehicle rolled to a stop.
One man stepped out.
Tall.
Composed.
Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit despite the storm.
He walked toward Isabella with measured confidence, his gray eyes fixed on hers.
The city noise seemed to disappear.
Even the rain felt quieter.
He stopped a few feet away.
"Isabella Romano?"
She stared at him, breathing hard.
"Who are you?"
He held her gaze for a long moment before answering.
"My name is Dante De Luca."
He glanced toward the masked man, who had already begun retreating into the shadows.
Then he looked back at Isabella.
"I've spent years searching for you."
She took another step back.
"I think you've mistaken me for someone else."
"I haven't."
His voice was calm, certain.
"The life you've known..."
He paused.
"...was built on a lie."
Before she could respond, a sharp crack echoed through the street.
A bullet struck the pavement between them.
The crowd erupted into screams.
Dante turned instantly, placing himself between Isabella and the source of the shot.
"Get down!" he ordered.
As more gunfire erupted from a nearby rooftop, Isabella realized that whoever these people were...
They hadn't come to scare her.
They had come to make sure she never learned the truth.
