Chapter 14

It took a while before Licht managed to tear her eyes away from the closed door. His words swirled around her mind. The information overloading her brain. There were too many things she suddenly learned. Things she didn’t even know existed and frankly she really didn’t want to be aware of. It was true when they said ignorance is bliss. She was so confused of it all. On one hand, the logical part of her brain, was telling her to get away. To leave this mansion and never look back, forget all the things she had seen and heard. And the other, her heart which was beating frantically behind her ribs that she feared it will explode, was telling her different things. Something she feared. It was beating for him. The sparks that erupts whenever they touched was too much even before all of this. But now that she knows the truth, it had turned into a mirage of fireworks burning every nerves inside her body. Only leaving that sweet tingling under her skin. And that realization scared her, because it meant that despite everything that she knew about him, she can’t leave him. She wasn’t scared of what he is, only the thought that she was okay with all of it. There were no opposition from her heart. Right now, she has no idea what to do. She was uncertain of her feelings and it was confusing her, Only when she felt Clara’s hand on her shoulder did the haze lifted from her thoughts. She looked at the other girl, uncertainty clear in her eyes. Clara smiled at her reassuringly but she could see how forced it was. She wasn’t the only one who was affected by what's happening. “What are we going to do?” She heard Clara ask after moving towards the edge of the bed. Licht could see the same fear resonating from her, the way her body trembled slightly and the misty look from her eyes. However, she doesn’t know what the answer to that question is. “I…” Clara began again, her voice wavering, “I’m scared of what he is but why? Why is the thought of leaving him so painful?” She whispered, whipping her head to look at Licht, the tears she was holding now cascading freely from her eyes. “I don’t know.” She said in a small voice. “I don’t know.” She repeated louder. “I have no idea either. But we can’t stay here, can we?” She asked desperately, watching for a sign from the other girl to assure her that they shouldn’t be here, they weren’t meant to be here. They were just human. Something like werewolves or soul mates are simply a thing of myths. Fantasies that were told for entertainment. Being thrust into such an unknown world all of a sudden was too much for them. A few silent minutes passed between them. Only accompanied by the sound of soft sobbing from Clara while Licht’s clutched her head and heart. Both throbbing painfully from the barrage of thoughts assaulting her mind. Clara finally calmed herself and was wiping her eyes, a sheen of determination shining in her eyes. “Should we?” Clara answered her with her own question, her voice a bit hoarse from the crying. Licht was startled, she looked at the other girl, surprised at the conviction from her tone. The feeling of uncertainty resurfaced, she hugged her knees to her and buried her head on it to escape that feeling. She gritted her teeth and clenched her fist. Licht prided herself from being tough, losing her father made her that way. That the only things she cherished are her family and she promised herself that she will never let anything make her waver anymore. “Do you want to leave?” She said more than ask, as if she knew the answer to her question. She lifted her head to see a thinned lip Clara. It was a bit mortifying but even she can see that the cowardly girl was much braver than her at this moment. Clara has decided. While she was still feeling ambivalent about the situation. “I think we’re taking this too rashly.” Clara answered her. “It’s true that it is crazy and scary but,” she paused, looking straight her, her brown eyes swirling with conviction, “I think we should give them a chance?” She finished, wording her sentence as if asking for her permission. “They’ve never hurt us. We both know that.” Clara reminded her, as if easing her worries. “I don’t want to live with what if’s, I’ve done that all of my life. I don’t want to be scared anymore.” Clara smiled despite herself, this was the first time that she felt confident with her words. She looked expectantly to her friend. Licht swallowed before detangling her limbs and sitting straight, her head bobbing in affirmation. “You’re right,” she agreed, “We shouldn’t let fear cloud our judgment. Just because we’re human doesn’t mean we have to run away from them. We’re not weak!” She added her voice gaining in volume as she ended her speech, a smile lifting off her lips and she watched the other girl mirror it. “Besides, they did say they weren’t going to let us go, so why bother even thinking about it?” Clara teased, in her head she was wondering why she was okay with that. Isn’t that basically imprisonment. She crinkled her brow, her lips coming to a pout. She stared at Licht in bewilderment. “Hey, do you think this is what Stockholm syndrome is?” She asked seriously and Licht only looked at her weirdly. Then she has no idea why but that made her giggle, then Clara followed suit until they both burst into a fit of laughter. Somehow, she felt so light that she just couldn’t contain it. After a few minutes, their laughter died down and they found themselves laying side by side on the bed. “Maybe we’re really crazy. I mean we’re actually considering to stay in a mansion full of overgrown dogs.” Licht stated, staring at the ceiling above her. “Maybe.” Clara replied with a smile, shrugging as she continued. “I mean after hearing us laugh after crying, they might think we are.” She paused, moving up to prop herself on her elbows to stare at the brick walls of their room. “Hey Licht.” “Hmm?” was Licht only answer, turning her head slightly to stare up at the other girl. Clara lowered her head near Licht’s ear and whispered, “Do you think they can hear us? Aren’t werewolves have like, super hearing?!” she said her eyes wide with wonder, now only thinking what kind of things werewolves can do. At that Licht propped herself up too, her vision landing on the closed door. Using her keen senses, she felt that there were no one outside their room. But remembering the instances where their housemates could hear the faintest of whisper, she didn’t doubt that they could hear them despite the distance and thick walls. “I think for our sake, they shouldn’t be eavesdropping.” She said doubtfully, she looked at Clara, her eyes narrowing. The other girl share her suspicion and with a nod they both shouted. “Maris!” It wasn’t long before they heard the telltale sign of someone walking on the hall towards their room. The two girls, abruptly moved to a sitting position just as Maris appeared behind the door. “You called?” She asked, still not entering the premise. “Yes, and please come inside.” Licht answered, they didn’t call her just to ask if they were listening. The two of them has decided but they still need to confirm some things before running headlong with their decision. The door opened to reveal Maris with her ever present smile, a knowing glint flashed from her eyes. Her motherly vibes didn’t lessen for a bit as she smoothened the white apron on her black dress. Her silver eyes showing that she understood their call. Licht watched as she moved to take the small chair in front of their bed. She hadn’t really thought about it but Maris had always moved elegantly, and her silver hair and eyes framed by her angled face made her look ethereal. Actually, all of them looked so out of this world. Now she wonders how she didn’t see that these people are so beautiful to be human. Her musing were cut short as Maris’ soft voice filtered through her ears. “If you’re wondering, yes I can hear you but I tried very hard not to listen. It’s very hard not to though since I could hear all of it.” She answered their previous question with a giggle. “No worries though since I kicked the four out to give you space. I’m the only one who can hear.” She assured them and that made the two sigh in relief. "But I suggest you don't call us dogs when those two are present." she said with a hint of mischief in her voice. The two simply looked at her sheepishly. -- Maris eyes softened as she stared at the two girls who she had been with for months. Even if they weren’t her two boy’s mates, she still loves and adores them. They were great kids, and knowing that made her want them to stay more. If she was being honest she was worried at first since they were truly scared and hearing them cry made her heart break. She was only thankful that she had half the mind to make the two go away for a while or else, Lark and John must’ve rushed towards their mates, scaring them further. Being called here must mean that they have decided, she was serious when she said she stopped listening to them despite her curiosity. She only caught the insult because of her wolf flicking its ears in irritation. She wanted to give them the space to think and not sway them of any decision they made. Even if it is to leave, she will respect it and will do everything in her power to make the two respect it as well. It wasn’t like them leaving is the end. There will always be a way for two bonded souls. A mate bond is nothing to be trifled with. “What do you want to talk about?” She asked them when she felt the nervousness radiating off of them. Despite that her wolf was simply laying calm in her head and that gave her hope. That must mean that it wasn’t feeling any anxiety from them anymore. She watched as the two seemed to reach an understanding with each other wordlessly before looking at her with resolve which brought a smile to her face. That meant that they’re in sync, their souls intertwining themselves to their roles of Luna and Beta female. The unease they had before melted and only bravery showed as they stared her down without flinching from her presence. The two were unaware at how Maris’ chest puffed up as a swell of pride rushed through her system. Her wolf’s ear perked up and its tails swished in appreciation. “We’ve decided to stay.” They said in unison, staring straight at her. Maris had to blink twice, not believing what she heard at first before a huge grin erupted from her face and she abruptly stood up to tackle the two in a hug, falling to the bed with a squeal. “Oh, you made the right decision my dears. I promise you that you won’t regret this.” She said as she smothered them with her chest. She wiped off the tears that escaped her eyes, she was so happy. She released the two from her bear hug. Smiling sheepishly when they groaned from the pain. “I’m sorry, I was too happy I forgot to control my strength.” She said hurriedly afraid that she will scare them again. Licht laughed and waved her hand in a dismissing manner. “Don’t worry we’re fine.” She said while rubbing her shoulders. Clapping her hand, Maris asked for their attention. “So what do you want to ask me? I'll answer to the best of my ability.” She told them, knowing that it wasn’t as simple as them deciding to stay. They wanted to know more and they had the right to. Clara raised her hands first while bouncing at the bed, before she put it down her face a shade of red. Maris chuckled at her enthusiasm. “What is it, child?” she coaxed her, her motherly smile back in place. “Uhm, so you’re supernatural right? Are you the actually super old but still look young type?” she asked sincerely that Maris almost choked, she could practically see the curiosity and wonder in her face. But she held her composure and answered her question. “Yes, it’s true that we start to age much slower than humans when we hit our thirties. However, the average lifespan of a werewolf is only at least two hundred fifty years old. Although back in the olden days our lifespan was at least five hundred years old.” She started, loving the way their eyes lit up in wonderment. “We are not immortals, or else there will be more of us than humans. We have lower progeny rate as well, so the balance is still kept.” She explained and the two made an ‘oh’ sound. “So how old are you?” Licht suddenly asked, and she could also hear the underlying question of how old the guys were. She smiled mischievously, knowing that they will be shocked. “I’m well over a hundred. Though I won’t say the exact value. You should know a girl’s age should be a secret.” She winked at the two, then laughing at their reaction. “Wow, you don’t look a day over fifty.” Licht said amazed. The only thing that made her look older was her silver hair and the crow’s feet around her eyes. “By the way, Lark and John are only twenty two. They’re not ridiculously old as you might think.” She teased earning a blush from the two. "So about us being mates to them. What does that entails?" Licht asked dispelling the light atmosphere they had and a blanket of tense pressure enveloped the room. Maris smiled despite the seriousness of the question. "It is what the two told you. Your souls were intertwined, the Moon Goddess gave you as a gift to my boys." She told them, her tone warm. Licht nodded her head. Somehow, hearing that caused a surge of warmth throughout her whole being and her heart squeezed, but not in a painful way as earlier. A rush of color flooded their faces, and a small curve appeared on their mouths unconsciouly. Then she remembered the mysterious guy from the forest, the trigger to all of this. Her eyes hardened as she turned to stare at Maris, the older woman answering her expression with a worried look. "The guy from the forest, who is he? He knows who Lark is and based on his reaction he does too." Maris let out a defeated sigh, she feared that she will ask about that. Clara only looked confused as she darted her eyes from the older woman to her. "Let's just say that, that guy is someone who is a threat to our pack." Maris looked away, her eyes narrowing in contempt as she thought about him. "Remember the times Lark and John are out for 'work', they were responding to them trespassing the our lands." She told them truthfully, knowing how worried the two everytime the two men leave. Licht bit her thumb nail as she processed her words. A habit she always had when she's anxious. Her ears buzzed at the thought that the guy was truly dangerous as she thought. "You were so lucky that he didn't do anything to you. And that he didn't know that you were Lark's mate, or else." Maris said, shivering at the morbid things swimming in her mind. "That I am. And he even suspected it, it was fortunate that I had no idea what he was talking about that time." Licht commented off handedly. "Wait you mean there's some dangerous guy roaming around here. And you met him Litch?" Clara spoke at the side, fear painted in her brown orbs. "And what do you mean or else? Why is being mates for them so important to this person?" She asked histerically. She' so not suited for this kind of things. Maris sensed her distress and quickly placate her worries. "Calm down, we won't let anything happen to you. Our pack will protect you no matter what." Licht also went to comfort her friend. What Maris said mattered, because wether they leave or not. If those people learned what they are, she was sure that they will look for them. Now she was more resolute in her decision to stay. She won't risk it. Clara was almost hyperventilating from the fear gripping her and was seconds away from fainting again. Licht gripped her friend's face and turned her head forcibly. "Clara, look at me. Calm down, take deep breaths." she said, trying to project calmness in her and she felt relieved when she nodded her head and took a slow breath. She felt as the tense muscles relaxed under her fingers. She smiled when Clara signalled that she was okay. "Let's trust in them. As you told me." she told her and Clara swallowed before nodding her head. The older woman looked at her Luna in astonishment. There was something odd about it, but she can't put her finger on it. A sudden forceful push at her mental barrier took her focus from the girls. She could feel the anxiousness from her bond with her Alpha and Beta. They must've felt their emotions and was panicking. She opened her mind to them. Reassuring them that everything was fine. Licht noticed the faraway look from Maris. Wondering what was wrong with the older woman. "Maris?" she asked. The older woman took a second to respond, blinking first before looking back at them. "The two are asking if they can see you now? They can answer any questions you have left." she told them. Watching carefully for their reaction. Licht bit the inside of her cheeks. Pondering hard at that request. To be honest, even if they had decided to stay, it was still awkward and the thought of being with him is still scary. She has no clue what reaction she will have. But she steeled her mind, looking at the other girl for confirmation. When she got the okay, she nodded her head to Maris. Maris got their affirmation and her eyes turned blank again. After contacting them she looked at the two girls who were looking at her weirdly but before they can ask, their stomach growled, having missed breakfast and all that worrying made them hungry. Maris held in her laugh but a few giggles managed to escape moreso when she spotted the embarrased looks of the girls. Extending her arms to them she toom them outside the room. "I bet you were hungry now. Come it's almost time for lunch. You shoukd eat first before meeting them." she told them. Licht smiled gratefully at her but the nervousness settled in the pit of her stomach. She just hopes that thngs will be fine after this. ---------- A/N: Sorry for the late upload.
