Chapter 18 Licht fidgeted on her seat, her face burning hot at the various stares she was getting on the dinner table. Maris was so happy she didn't even hide the grin from her, Jake looked astonished at first before he flashed a smile at her as well. Andrea was giggling, Clara's cheeks reddened as well but she managed to give her a smile for support while John was smirking at the man behind her. The food was tasteless on her tongue as the attention continued to pour her way. And also maybe because of the heavy presence pressed on her back and the hand that has been running circles on her thigh plus the one draped across her midsection. Oh dear Lord in heaven, she doesn't know if she could survive the night without her head exploding from all the blood that's rushing into it. "Can you let me off please?" She said so low it barely sounded off her lips, resigned when she finally couldn't take the embarrassment. Instead a head plopped down her right shoulder, his chin grinding on it and making a flurry of fireworks go off once again. Effectively shutting her up, she let go of the spoon and turned to look at him with narrowed eyes. He simply smiled at her. The hands on her thigh stopped their movements to move to her face and swipe at the small trickle of soup off her lips before he licked it off his fingers making her face redder if that was humanly possible. She opened her mouth only to close it again, mortified at his actions. "Let me go now." She now commanded but his hands just tightened across her, his eyes looking at her with steely gaze. She's seconds away from hitting him at his head but she remembered why she was in this predicament in the first place. "But you promised to do anything I want since you kicked me." He said with a flash of his perfect white teeth when he grinned. The mischievous glint on his eyes was not lost to her and she chastised herself when she fell for her tricks earlier. It all started when she woke up from her nap this late afternoon. Waking up in the arms of your mate is a wonderful feeling for any werewolf, however for a human like Licht who was still adjusting to her new reality, seeing the handsome face of Lark when she woke up startled her so much that she kicked herself off the bed. Landing on her back right on the floor. A few rustling on the bed and she saw Lark's worried face looking down at her. Her face burned at the embarrassing display and she only just noticed that she was flashing him her underwear. She hurriedly stood up, Lark helping her up back to the bed. "Are you alright?" he asked as he inspected her whole body. She only waved her hand saying that she was fine. He heaved a sigh of relief, he laughed at her red face making her slink back. "I'm so sorry for kicking you." She gasped remembering what she just did. This time, she was the one inspecting him. Lark halted her hands by grasping it on his own and pulling her close to him, making her red face color more. "Are you alright did it hurt?" She was panicking at their proximity that her brain was going haywire. She just woke up and her brain haven't caught up yet so she didn't notice the sudden dawning on his face and the smirk painting in his mouth. "Ouch," He said dramatically when she touched his stomach she kicked earlier. He was squinting his eyes, his face scrunched up in pain that it made her heart lurch painfully in her chest. "I'm so sorry Lark. Oh my God, what can I do to make it better?" She said hurriedly, seconds away from running outside their room to look for a medical kit. Lark stopped her by clasping at her wrist, he waved his hand in front of her telling him he's fine but she didn't believe him. Her kicks and punches are stronger than average and she often use it to intimidate other guys flirting with her before. She was so distraught in hurting him that she missed the evil glint in his eyes as he remained curled up. "Lark, I'm sorry. I'll do anything to make it better I promise." She gushed out, a mistake she will find out later as the man continued with his acting. "You'll really do anything?" He ground out as if in incredible pain but he was sitting straight now. "Yes, I'll do anything! What do you want me to do?" She said, her eyes crazed. She doesn't really know why but the simple fact that she hurt him was painful for her. When she looked up to assess how he was feeling only did his plans dawned on her. She could only let her mouth hang open at his smirk. "Well my dear mate, I want you to..." He whispered the words to ears and she was left a blubbering mess refusing his request but he was cheeky enough to make her remember her promise. She wanted to punch him for tricking her but she fell on his bait. Well no one told her that being mates with someone makes you unable to say no to whatever they wanted. She really regretted saying yes to his demands earlier. Stupid Licht. Now she's stuck on his lap, trying to swallow the bland food as they become the center of attention this evening. This wasn't what she thought off when she said they'll be taking it slow. Not at all. Grumbling at the relentless man, she let out a string of profanities under her breath knowing that it wasn't lost to them. She felt the vibration of his laughter at her back. Warm feelings erupted at her stomach at the sound. Seeing his merry face and the child like expression on his eyes made this embarrassing situation a bit easier. Still, she didn't take kindly to the fact that he played her. The amount of revenge she had on him was going up and she had no idea how to get back at him. The dinner was filled with casual talks, Licht resigned to her fate on Larks lap even going so far as to feed him when he refused to stop fondling her. Which she still claimed as s****l harassment. The others laughed at their bickering and she huffed, narrowing her eyes on each of them. They were ganging up on her she swear. When the final dish were served and finished, they all bid goodnight to each other. Licht tried to take Clara's arms and beg her to go back to their own room but seeing the glowing face of her friend and the way she looked adoringly at John who spared no time in giving attention to her, Licht had not the heart to split the two lovebirds right now. She sighed inwardly, why can't she be like that? Just relishing at the affection Lark was readily giving her? Her eyes turn to watch her own mate who was looking at her with a smile on his face. She could feel the content he was giving off earlier when he had her in his arms and she couldn't really say that she didn't enjoy the feel of him. But she's embarrassed. She don't know a thing about relationships! Let alone being fated mates. That's like the stories her mother often tell her when she was only a kid. She had no idea that when she grows up that she will experience it as well. It was overwhelming yet her heart craved it. It was conflicting, her heart and mind waging war inside her but a simple outstretch of his hand had her heart winning in leaps and bounds. She shyly took the offered hand, looking up at him, he was staring at her as if she was the most precious thing on earth. And she can’t help feeling the same for him. But it’s too fast her mind waved that red flag up and she wanted to chastise it for making her confused. Licht nibbled on her lips as she followed Lark back to their room. She peered at him through her lashes, watching his handsome profile, telling herself that this guy actually wanted her. Then why can’t she just take what’s he’s giving her freely? Because you can’t give him the same just yet. Her mind shot back at her. And why is that? She questioned herself again. Because even if you decided to be with him, in your mind he was still that monster that change to the one thing you’re terrified the most in the world. Licht frowned at the realization. Really if she can, she would gladly give him her heart despite how scary that sounds but she can’t just ignore her phobia and swallowing the truth that the guy she likes is not human like her. Does it even matter? Maybe, maybe not. By the time they arrive in front of the door her face was all scrunched up and her frown deeper than before. She wasn’t really paying attention to her surroundings when she’s thinking deeply so when she felt a finger smoothing out the wrinkles in her forehead, she was startled from her reverie. She looked up at Lark who had a sad look in his eyes before it was gone that she questioned if it was really there. She opened her mouth to say something but he just opened the door and let them in. He ushered her to sit on the bed and he took a seat next to her. She watched him intently, wondering what he was thinking because if she continue to struggle with her thoughts she’ll be more confused with a headache. “Do you feel anxious being with me?” He asked suddenly that she had no idea how to answer. She stared at him for a while, thinking deeply before letting out a sigh. “I will be lying if I said I’m not.” She confessed, grimacing at the sad look he showed her. He closed his eyes breathing deeply while taking her hand in his. She watched transfixed on their curled hands. “I don’t want you to be. But I don’t know how to placate your fears. And I don’t really have a long patience so I might scare you off more.” He said to her, raising their entwined hands to his lips to kiss the back of her hand. Her heart ached at how vulnerable he looked. In her head she understood that they can’t have a relationship at all if she just continued to hide and jerk away from him. She put her other hand on their entwined ones and squeezed it. To take courage or something because she really needed it to take that leap of faith. “Ever since I last saw my dad circled by big snarling wolves I’ve always been scared of them.” She started her story, her hands trembling at the memory that branded her childhood a lot of painful memories. She saw his eyes widen at her and he made a move to stop her but she just raise one hand and smiled reassuringly at him. “It’s irrational, I know that how I hate the animal. I used to tremble with just the picture of one when I was a kid.” She continued a sad look passing in her eyes when she stared at him. He gathered her in his arms but stayed silent, encouraging her to continue. “When dad died, it wasn’t the same anymore.” She paused, feeling the telltale pricks of tears on her eyes but she held them back. “It was hard for us, my mother just degraded every day and I was forced to grow up much faster than I would have liked. Then a miracle happened, I got a new sister, I had a new resolve in life so I worked hard more. But it was more difficult, Azaiah was growing, my mother was getting worse and I had as bad as temper as you.” She chuckled a little, a bit broken. “I’ve been standing on my own fighting my own battles you know, I don’t even have a friend to call my own before I came here. I’m not really good with relationships, I just know how to protect and fight for my family.” By this time the tears she had been suppressing finally made their way down her cheeks. “I don’t really know what to do about us. And frankly I’m scared of your wolf.” She told him, looking up at him as if she was sorry for her own constitution. Lark shook his head before planting a soft kiss on her forehead. That made her smile, loving the sizzle that spreads from that contact point all throughout her body. “I’m sorry for pushing you Licht.” She heard him say to her and she was pained that he had to apologize to her. “You’re such a brave girl.” He wiped the trails of her tears using his thumb and he leaned into it. Her chest felt lighter once she said her thoughts on him. Now that she thought about it, it was the first time she had told anybody about her family and her insecurities. And it felt good, it made her feel better and made her feel like she could take being with this man in front of her. This man that cradled her face when she was just as vulnerable. She felt safe and loved that she had this intense feeling of wanting to show to him how she was actually happy that she was given a man just for her. So with a burst of confidence, she rose a bit using her hands to reach his lips and place a soft kiss there. It was brief but it was as burning as the one they shared that afternoon. Lark looked at her in surprise and then he kissed her as well, the soft gentle kind that made her toes curl. He was looking at her with eyes full of love and she was afraid that she couldn’t give him as much. “I’m lucky to have a mate like you. So brave, your strength astound me.” He said to her while kissing her temple and crushing her to him. She giggled at his words, although not used to compliments she was happy to hear that from him. “Thank you. But I’m nothing amazing. I should be the one to thank my lucky stars to be fated to you.” She admitted to him shyly and he laughed kissing her once again. “Let’s just thank the Goddess that she gave us each other.” He compromised and she nodded her head. -- After that heartfelt conversation between them, they settled to talking about each other. “I never thought I will love the color purple until I saw your eyes.” He told her making her cheeks burn again. “I like red now too by the way.” He added as his thumb swiped at her heated cheeks. He laughed merrily when she pouted at him. “Yeah, I never knew dark could get darker when I stare at your eyes.” She countered and he looked at her in apology. “I must’ve scared you huh.” He said, hitting a palm on his forehead. “I shouldn’t have changed in front of you.” He said realizing that he gave her quite a scare, one for sudden changing into an animal, and two for being the animal she feared the most. Licht shrugged her shoulders. “I have to see it. Well I asked for it really so it wasn’t your fault.” She said to him but he just shook his head. “I should’ve told you in a better way.” He said and she nodded. “You should have but it was done and here we are. Still together.” She pointed out making her beam at her, the kind of smile that is bad for her heart because it make it beat faster than the healthy amount it should be. “We are, aren’t we?” He said eyeing her as if he was seeing something that she can’t. “I’m still sorry for scaring you though.” He told her again and she glared at him, threatening to hit him if he won’t stop apologizing. “I’ll do my best in getting used to your wolf.” She told him, though she cringed at the thought of the large canine anywhere near her. Lark looked at her thoughtfully and she smiled unsurely at him. “Don’t push yourself, he might hate it but my wolf hated scaring and hurting you more than not being near you physically.” He said to ease her fears. She pursed her lips thoughtfully at his words. “This wolf thing, is it separate in personality than you?” She asked suddenly curious at how this werewolf thing work. She could see his smile at her enthusiasm of the subject. He shook his head at her question, putting a hand on his chin as he looked for the right words to explain the being in his body. “In a way yes, you could say that we’re different but still the same. It’s really hard to explain, it’s just that I am me and I am my wolf. I may look human now but I’m a wolf. He’s the more primal part of me that works on instinct.” He explained, his brows furrowed as he tried his best to tell her the complexities of being a werewolf. Licht nodded her head, it sound complicated yet simple at the same time. Like him. She gave him a beaming smile thanking him for taking the time to explain it to her. He smiled back, loving the way that she was curious about them. At least now she wasn’t running the opposite way when they talked about it. It was an improvement. “So he wants to be with me, but aren’t you here with me now?” She asked again as she pondered at the implications and he laughed at how hard she was thinking about it. “Hmm, just think that I am a different entity from it. He’s like a voice in my head, maybe another personality or maybe he’s my consciousness.” He offered and she just crinkled her nose in confusion. “You’re going to make my brain bleed from thinking too much. I’m not exactly bright you know.” She said and he pinched her nose when she said that and she yelped at the pain. Punching him when he let go of her, rubbing the abused appendage while she glared at him. “You’re a very intelligent girl Licht, don’t undermine yourself.” He chastised her and she pouted at him giving him the stink eye. “But I didn’t even finished high school.” She replied taking him in surprise. He quirked a brow at her in question and she grunted at his look. “Like I said, I had to work for my sister and my mother. And I really have a bad temper so I’m often sacking other kids when they insult me and my family.” She explained with a shrug as if it was no big deal but when she looked up she let out a small squeak at how hard and scary his eyes were. It was bleeding darkness once again. “They insulted you?” He asked, a vein in his temple was about to burst at how angry he was and she understood that it was because of her. She can be slow at times but she noticed that he’s mostly angry when it’s about her. She touched his face to make her look at her and she felt his bristles smooth down at her touch. The thought that she could calm him down made her giddy and she remembered her revenge on his antics but that’s not what she should be thinking about right now. With a pointed glare she forced his face to stare back at her. “Look, it’s a long time ago and as I said, I punched them most of the time. I’m suspended and late a lot of times so I just quit high school altogether.” She said to him to simmer his anger down and when his onyx eyes looked a bit dimmer she smiled at him. “I’m happy that you’re angry for me but I can handle myself.” She teased at him and he grinned, pulling him to her. “Yeah, your kicks hurt.” He teased and she glared at him. Swatting at his shoulders. “Ha, as if I really hurt you.” She crossed her arms. He pinched her cheeks when she remained indignant to him. “No, I actually felt that. You land good kicks.” He said, then pausing as if pondering something as he stared at her. She squirmed at his penetrating stare and she had to clap her hands in front of him to get him off his dazed state. He shook his head at the sudden loud sound. “Anyway, you don’t need to protect yourself, I’m here now.” He told her while placing a kiss on the top of her head. She just narrowed her eyes at him, pointing out that women can protect men too but in this case, she really can’t protect herself against wolf-transforming guys that threatens to kill you. “Let’s go to bed now. You must be exhausted after today. There’s something we need to discuss tomorrow as well so you need to get some rest.” He said to her, something indescribable flashing on his eyes it miffed her but she said nothing. She resigned at his command when she saw how serious he looked. Taking some clothes from their closet she turned to look at the man a bit shyly. “Can you uh, go outside while I take a shower?” She asked now that she thought of how embarrassing it is for him to hear her showering. A long and languid smirk entered his mouth and that cheeky glint returned to his eyes. “Or we can take one together?” He offered and she looked at him pointedly. “Lark.” She warned and the man surrendered while putting his hands up. “I’m sorry. I’ll go out now. I’ll try my best not to listen in.” He winked, telling her that he could still hear her outside. She stopped the itch to get a vase and hurl it to him. This man, they just a heart to heart and he’s teasing her again. “Lark, if you listen in I’m going to throw you out of the room!” She shouted back at him and he only laughed at her before closing the door behind him. --------- I'm pretty sure I posted this already last night but it seems like it doesn't show? I don't know if it's because of dreame or our slow internet connection. A/N: Yay, another update. And before you hurl those pitchforks at me for taking a long time, my laptop's charger broke and our internet at home is seriously non-existent. I did my best writing on our computer but I just hate writing in place. I like writing while dragging my laptop around the house. My brain works better that way. But my charger just got back at me today so I pushed to finish this chapter. Anyway, I might be going back to work next week or April so my uploading time will be slower again but I'll do my best to make sure that it will not take months for the next chapter. My goal is to upload one chapter per week or per two weeks. That way I'm not burdened along with my work. Also I just added a new chapter to my other werewolf story Caged so if you can, you can also read that. Anyways thank you for the support! Like and comment, I love reading your thoughts on my book. Ciao, see you on the next chapter!
