Chapter 17
After their intimate episode Licht decided to kick Lark out of the room since he had been a very sexy distraction to her and she had decided to take things slow with him. These feelings that she was feeling were premature at best, they had to make a relationship not just jump head first.
Thankfully John was looking for him as well, it seemed like it was about their work and she gladly gave Lark to him. The man was hesitant at first but John might have said something to him through their mind-link to make him look serious.
She was curious but she knew there was something dangerous about what they were doing. If that man she saw on the woods was an example. She had no doubts he was a werewolf too, now his threat of killing her brought a shiver on her spine, he wasn’t kidding then.
She had thanked her lucky star that she was able to get away from that unscathed. She has also understood his need to be near her and putting them in the same room. It was for her safety and she hoped also to speed the progress of their relationship.
Licht sighed as she arranged her clothes, there weren’t that much so she knew it wouldn’t take long to finish this task. Now that the distraction was gone she had finally took a look at the room where she would be sleeping from now on.
She had been cleaning this room from a while now but she hadn’t really been personal about it, it was his privacy and she had respected it. She made sure that she was in and out as quick as possible so she hadn’t taken a good look before.
She looked around, there wasn’t really anything on his room beside a huge bed with a side drawer in the corner, there was a lamp on there and some books. On its left was the walk in closet and on the left wall was the bathroom. On the right were the huge windows with a wide sill enough to accommodate a large man. She could picture him looking around his property through here. She peaked outside to see only a view of the forest, it was strangely calming as she stared at it for a while.
She snapped from her daze and continued her observation noting the fireplace with both side having a bookshelf full of books, she also noted the two chairs in front of it. A small smile appeared on her face and her heart warmed at the thought that he had two so he could share it with his mate. Although the memory associated with it was a bit scary, it was her glimpse on their dangerous world. It allowed her to judge him not just on what he wanted her to see but the whole of him.
And she decided to stay with him despite that.
He wasn’t just the sexy and gentle man that she had been crushing on for a while now, no he was also the strong-able-to-kill-you kind of man who could change into a massive wolf. Speaking of his wolf, she still had no idea how to tread on that one. In fact the thought of it terrified her, she had to learn how to face her fears.
Easier said than done.
Her once happy mood was ruined and made her remember the task at hand. Another sigh escaped her lips as she gathered her things. She entered the walk in closet to see the organized clothes of Lark. Suits, shirts and casuals are categorized even his shoes are neatly placed on the floor. It made her giggle and appreciate him more. She continued on with her task while humming a small tune.
--
Lark was pissed at his beta for taking him away from his mate. Doesn’t he also have one of his own? Shouldn’t he also feel the need to be with her at all times? His frown was deep as he took the seat on his office. He turned to his friend with a hard look on his eyes.
John put his hands up at the intense stare of him. “Look as much as I want to tie my mate to my side, I can feel her anxiety and shyness so I gave her some space… for now.” He paused on the last one, Lark nodded his head in understanding. It was impossible to be away from one’s mate. It was agonizing and who would want that but their mate’s comfort comes first.
But that doesn’t mean he had to bring him as well. He narrowed his eyes at his best friend. They had a nice mood going too, Lark smirked as he touched his lips. The hunger for her burning his very soul. He wouldn’t mind taking another taste of those sweet lips. He groaned when his lower part awaken from the sinful thoughts of his mind.
He heard John clear his throat beside him. “Earth to Lark, it’s not the time to be feeling horny.” He teased and Lark took the item nearest to him which was a stapler and threw it to his head. John avoided the item while laughing at him.
“Shut up, as if you weren’t like this too.” He pointed out, which made them chuckle at each other. Here they were, the top brass of their pack talking with a hard on.
John scratched the back of his neck while smiling sheepishly. “It’s kinda hard to stop it, no?” He said and Lark nodded his head. The more he thought of his mate the harder it was to stop the images his mind was producing for him. His wolf was not any help at all, he was only yelping and growling his approval.
“Why did you have to take me away from her?” He groaned as he rubbed his face trying to banish the immoral thoughts from his mind. John just smiled at him, patting his shoulder.
“Alpha, we both know your mate is more worried than mine. I just did you a favor by giving her some space.” John stated and while the thought of that irked him and his wolf, he had to agree with his friend. It was for the better.
He gave out a long sigh. But it was going so good.
“Fine. So what do you have for me?” He asked while arranging the things in his table. Due to Licht, he had been ignoring some of his paperwork but it seems that he had to do it whether he like it or not. Lark raised his head when his beta remained silent, the serious in his face spoke volumes.
He raised one of his brows a deep foreboding feeling permeated his being. John took a seat in front of his desk as he let out a loud sigh. “Sullivan mind-linked me earlier, saying he can’t reach you.” A teasing glint showed on his eyes as he smirked at his Alpha.
“I was busy.” Was his only response to that before waving his hands for him to continue.
“Sullivan found out how they could suppress their scent.” John shook his head as his face scrunched up in disbelief. “They were ingesting a formula of wolfbane and silver. Sullivan said that it was in small amount not enough to kill but just enough to keep their wolves inside and thus eliminating their scent.” He explained what he was told, looking forward to Lark who had his hands folded in front of him. Looking like he was in deep thought.
“That’s too risky just to look for him. Just why do they want him back so desperately?” He asked, his brows furrowed in contemplation. The thought of that rogue who killed his mother irked him that he had to grit his teeth to suppress the growl threatening to come out.
“Even now he’s still causing trouble for my pack.” He snarled his eyes shifting from black to a deeper darkness. He felt John’s hand on his shoulder and he took a deep breath to calm himself. The image of his mate had his wolf calming down so quickly that he didn’t manage to stop the smile that leaked from his lips.
John whistled, “Remind me to use your mate against you when you’re in a bad mood.” He teased earning a scowl and glare from him.
“Shut up.” Lark dismissed him and John only laughed but it faded soon enough.
“So what are we going to do?” he asked sincerely as he racked his brain for a solution.
Lark straightened in his seat as he looked down at his desk, as if the answers would be etched there. “I don’t know, for now we will increase the number of patrols and announce the probability of a rogue without any scent. We should also put a curfew so there would be no tragedy like the one before.” He stated, a sad look passed his eyes at the thought of his pack, it was his family and he failed to protect them.
“Tell Sullivan to research about that formula and see if we can find anything against it. Anyway how did that even help much to the rogues?” He asked, it’s useless to be scentless if they are also without wolf. John shrugged his shoulders.
“Apparently there was something in the concoction that helped breakdown the silver faster and since it was a little dose to begin with they only needed a few moments to come inside the pack and wait for t to pass.” John answered his question, it was bad really, learning that their enemy had such a useful tool against them.
Lark sighed, his right hand combing through his hair as the frustrations kept filing up. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose as he fought off the incoming headache.
“We can’t just keep on defending ourselves. Tell Derek to increase the training for the new and old warriors. Travis should head out to look for something that we could use against him. I heard he was with a human before we captured him, we could use those. Ask Sarah about any updates on the caught rogue. We can’t be passive now.” He commanded John who only saluted at him before firing away the orders he had given.
After a while John finally finished contacting their top warriors, and now he looked at Lark with a question in his eyes. Lark quirked is eyebrows at him, seeing him struggling to voice his question.
“What is it?” He asked impatiently, he wasn’t one to beat around the bush.
John cringed as he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. “So about our mates?” He trailed off unsure how to tackle this particular problem. Lark shifted at his seat, confused what his Beta was fidgeting about.
“What about them?” He asked a frown marring his face as he looked at the other man pointedly.
“How are we actually going to break the news about them to the pack?” He asked wincing at the harsh glare sent his way. John lifted his arms up in surrender. “Look we can’t just leave them here and the pack would want to meet them. Besides, we’re going to be busier if we want to end these problems quicker.” He reasoned as he laid out the fact to him.
Lark’s frown deepened as his Beta voiced out just another problem to him. “I don’t think we can let them know yet. They haven’t even warmed up to the news about our species, now you want them to be bombarded by hundreds of wolves wanting to know them? I bet they’ll run as fast as they could away from us.” He countered and John let out a growl at the thought which he answered with one of his own.
John backed down and showed him his neck in submission. Lark sat down once again as he composed himself.
“For now they will remain here, Jake, Andrea and Maris will be in charge of protecting them if we’re not here. I’ll also talk with Cornelius about the new patrolling areas, I’ll include this forest since Marcus was spotted here.” Lark stopped as the familiar burning rage spread through him. It still didn’t sit right with him that his mate was anywhere near that damn mutt.
“Calm down, Lark.” John cautioned once again and he took a deep breath to control his wolf. His hands were in a fist and he unfolded them to see claw marks on his palm. A vein ticked at his temple but he reigned in his anger.
“I’m fine.” He held up his hands to show his control, the wound was patching up quickly as if he didn’t puncture it with his claws. “Anyway the thing with our pack will be handled after our mates grew more accustomed to us. They’re so brave to face us and stifle their desire to run away.” Lark smiled, just the thought of Licht was enough to bring his mood back up. A deep longing to be with her was shining in his eyes, his adoration to her strength was unparalleled.
Although she was still anxious about their relationship it was to be expected, humans tend to run away from any danger they come across and although he would never hurt her, it doesn’t change the fact that he was dangerous.
“Amen to that.” John nodded his head, a silly grin plastered to his mouth as he thought of our mates as well. “Right, what are we going to do? We can’t just delegate everything to them.” John said once he went back to his serious Beta mode.
“I know, that’s why we’re heading to the pack once again. I’m going to give them more details as well as give a surprise visit to that son of a bitch.” He said and John nodded in understanding before deflating in his seat.
“We’re going to leave them again? But they are just warming up to us.” He whined like a little baby earning an eye roll from Lark. He snorted at him, “As if you aren’t anxious about leaving them as well.” John mocked him and he was met by a flying paperweight next, he barely avoided that one as he looked at Lark sheepishly.
“Sorry.” He grinned mischievously. Lark wanted to bang his head on the table with how childish his second in command could be. True he wasn’t keen on leaving Licht again but it was for her safety.
“Don’t be a baby. The faster we can finish this the faster we can go back here. But we will depart one week from now, we still have to increase security here and instruct the three.” He told him and John nodded his head.
“Should I call them?” John asked as he processed his words. As much as he doesn’t want to leave his mate, their safety was a priority. Lark shook his head telling him that he had contacted them and they will be there shorty.
Sometime later Lark’s office door opened to reveal Maris, Andrea and Jake. He motioned his head for them to come in and they all came near him. Standing at attention, even Maris wasn’t being her motherly self. She knows when to act as a guardian and when to act as a pack member.
Lark nodded his head in recognition of their wolf before he motioned with his hands for them to take a seat on the sofa. The three obeyed and clambered down on the brown leather cushion as they turned their attention on him.
Having their eyes trained on him he quickly got to their task. “Things had been going on in the pack, and since the attack I wanted to increase our guard for any other event like that happening. Today our young Sullivan told us that our enemy possessed a formula to hide their scents and thus made them harder to track down.” Lark started as he laid down the information to them.
Quickly their demeanor shifted from stiff to aggressive, any pack wolf would rise to any challenge from an outside danger more so for the warriors who were supposed to protect them. Raising his hand he willed for them to calm down and wait for his instruction.
“Due to this we will be going back to the pack to give them more detailed command on how to combat this new threat. Thus I appoint the three of you to guard our mates well.” He stated to them and Maris was the first to show her displeasure.
She frowned at them, her motherly aura back at full force. “But you just got with your mates. What are you going to say to them?” She huffed, putting her hands on her hips and pouting at the two. Lark looked at her pointedly, warning her not to test him.
“As much we wanted to stay here, we can’t. Besides the faster we finish this the faster we could go back. And we won’t be leaving so quickly. We’ll be staying here for a week… or two to ensure that the place was secured. I don’t want the previous incident to happen, we’re lucky nothing happened to my mate.” He said as reluctant as he is, things needed to be done.
“As for telling our mates, that’s our problem to solve.” He added as looked at John who was whining at the corner.
Maris huffed, “Fine but I’ll be showing them your baby pictures as punishment.” She said matter-of-factly and it took a large amount of restraint not to shout at the older woman. Jake and Andrea sweat dropped at the intense glare sent her way.
Maris stood her ground, waving his heated gaze as if it was nothing. “Oh please, it will make them like you more. Maybe they’ll even want babies when they see how cute you were before.” She gasped at the idea as she giggled at the thought of future babies.
John and Lark groaned as their cheeks turned pink with embarrassment. Sometimes Maris was too much.
“Fine, do whatever you want. But I want your full cooperation and focus on the days we’re not here.” He reminded them and they all bowed their head in respect to his command.
“Good you can leave now.” He said before stopping them once more. “Oh and Andrea, please have our mates go shopping. Their things are too little for their station.” He told her just as she was at the door. Andrea turned and nodded her head at him.
“Yes Alpha.” She said before following the other two outside.
When they were left alone John bowed at him as he dismissed. “Good luck Alpha.” He winked just as he was outside the door, laughing as Lark let out a growl at him. He shook his head at his beta’s antics. Letting out a breath, he let the tension escape from his body as the smile brightly lit his face. It was time to go back to his mate’s side.
--
As he looked at the large windows adorning his mansion, Lark noted that the sky had now turned a shade of orange. He didn’t even notice that so much time has passed since he left Licht on their room. The grin in his mouth just grew wider every time he think of her.
To think he was such a broody guy before now he can’t even stop the involuntary twitch of his mouth as he anticipated looking at his beloved again. Walking up the flight of stairs, he increased his pace as his wolf urged him to be with his mate faster.
He wanted to roll his eyes at how whipped his wolf has become but he can’t say he was much better. So when he was in front of their room, he turned the doorknob in excitement only to find that Licht was on the chair he made for her, sleeping.
Unconsciously, his feet moved to go near her sleeping form. His steps light despite his large feet. When he was in front of her, he knelt down to look at her much better. He watched as her chest fell with each even breathe. Her eyes were closed with her long lashes fanning her rosy cheeks.
Her mouth was barely open and he bit his own to stop himself from leaning down and kissing her again. He smiled as he watched her serene face, vowing to himself that he would do anything so she can keep sleeping this peaceful forever.
With a smile on his face he carded his hands on her dark hair, loving the silky texture on his fingers. Lark took a gulp as his eyes take in her body, now he was appreciating Maris’ choice of wardrobe as the black dress glued to her curves and her long and shapely legs were shown due to the shortness of the cloth.
He looked away and had to bite his tongue so he wouldn’t be tempted to do something she wouldn’t like. A groan from her took him out from his stupor as he turned to her again, she was shifting from her position as her head kept lulling down.
Smiling at her, he decided that the chair was not comfy enough for her. So he took her in his arms, hooking her legs with one arm, while the other moved her head close to his chest. His heart beat wildly at through his ribs as her body come close to his. She was so light and she quickly adjusted her body to burrow more into his.
He stiffened as he could feel her breath next to his neck, suppressing a groan, he immediately moved her to the bed. Only for her to open her eyes once her body touched the satin covers. Lark looked in alarm as she blearily opened her eyes, she was blinking the sleepiness away, rubbing her eyes with her hands.
“W-what?” She mumbled out and he shushed her, letting her head pressed down the pillow. “It’s okay, you should sleep more.” He whispered to her and she looked at him groggily. It seemed like she was still out of it and Lark chuckled at the cute way she was furrowing her brows at him.
“Lark?” She replied sleepily and he hummed his answer, his hands moving from her legs to her face, swiping the wayward tendrils away from her beautiful face. He smiled at her as she was deciding to either sleep or stay awake.
“You’re back.” She giggled, still unaware of her action as she fisted his front shirt towards herself before burrowing her face on it. He held her waist and dragged her flush to him which she gave out a pleased hum, a smile flitting on her face.
“Maris doesn’t want our help so I was bored.” She mumbled out, her eyes closed again, she had moved her head from the pillow to his arms. “I was sleepy, Lark, let’s sleep?” She shifted a bit as she eliminated the last distance they had. A satisfied sigh escaping her lips that were planted on Lark’s neck.
Lark just nodded his head that was on top of hers and she giggled when he did. And then she was asleep once again. So here he was with his mate tight to him and he can’t do anything. Not when she clearly looked so tired, she must be feeling the fatigue now that the excitement from yesterday has worn off.
Lark just rubbed his cheek on her head as his straining erection at her proximity was killing him, her constant twitches wasn’t helping him at all. Forget sleeping, he need to be awake to make sure he wouldn’t jump her like a starved beast. Patience, he needed a lot of patience.
Still he let out a chuckle as he looked at her face once again, his heart soaring now that she was in his arms, where she belongs. He wonders how he could leave him for even a second long.
