I knew Walter was saying this for Claudia to hear.
Claudia, being as sharp and calculating as she was, naturally caught the sarcasm. The smile on her face became stiff and forced.
Claudia tried to intercept us. "Grandpa Walter, I know how to play chess too. How about I play a few games with you?"
"No need. I'm old now. Playing chess takes energy and time. A few games to pass the time is enough. Aria is my granddaughter-in-law. Having her keep me company is all I need. I don't need outsiders." Walter shut her down without leaving any room for argument.
Being rejected again and again by Walter, even someone as patient as Claudia couldn't keep smiling.
