CHAPTER TWO

In the morning at about six am, I hear the house unlock. I decided to go ahead and get up. I really want to go running. It has been days since I went running. Today, I plan to run the fence line of my property. I’ll try and ask Dennis if there is a better place to run when we go to dinner.

Once in my outfit I head outside and warm up. I’ll likely have to do at least four laps around. I walk down toward the gate. About two laps in I see Dennis waving at me by the gate. Well that did not last long.

Hey! Are you already learning to run a border patrol in the pack? Haha

I guess so if I am a pack of one.

So you like to run?

Yeah I usually run about thirty miles a day. But I have not run in days. Is there a place to run around here?

Not really. At the top on the training grounds is a track I think it’s one mile around. But your land is about two. We can easily make you a nice running path just like you are running today.

That would be great!

Good thing about here is you can run as a human or wolf, and you do not have to wait for the times when females are training. Up top, you would only be able to run in human form and only when females are training. Do you do any other type of workouts?

I’m a black belt. I used to box a little, but once I found running I fell in love.

Ah I see! Well we can always set you up a gym within these gates if you want. We could even build you a sweet one! Everything you need we can get from the hardware store, that place has everything.

Well, I have got to get back up the mountain. I’ll see you around five thirty.

I go back to running. I run a few more laps then decide to get a shower.

I spent the day going through all the information. I found another letter that explains a lot about Robert's side of the family.

Josie, I know that you have your wolf. As far as I am concerned no one should leave a family member behind that is a shifter. I know my brother left money to care for you but to not tell you anything about your wolf history is wrong. I am not close with your father. I know nothing of his life. I was raised by our mother. He was raised by his father.

My mother left his father after he was born, for her mate. Her mate is my father. I grew up on this mountain in the Sanders pack. This pack is VERY different from other packs.

Everyone you meet past the road barrier during the day is a wolf shifter. They know everything about you. I did not hide you. They have always known about you, and have always known you were coming here from the moment I found out you did have your wolf.

I do not want it to sound like none of this would have happened if you had not got your wolf. I would have set you up in the human world as well.

Everyone in this town knows you were raised in the human world, and that you have hidden your wolf your whole life.

Your Alpha is Damion Sanders. His Beta is Dennis Townsand, the “caretaker”. His Gama is Lance Chance.

You will mostly see Dennis. He will keep a good watch on you as if you were his daughter. He was one of my best friends. He is the one you can trust the most with anything.

Everyone here is a good person, but he knows absolutely everything about me, and about you. The rest just know of you.

Dennis has been with me when I have checked in on you every time. He helped me design the necklaces you got every year. I hope you loved and wore them.

He will continue to give them to you from me. The wildflowers were from my mother. He will continue to deliver them also as I have.

Your mother and my brother were mates. He never properly rejected her. Even though he did not mark her, he marked the woman he chose. Do not worry your mother only felt their mating pains the night he marked that woman. But my brother was brought almost to his death when your mother got sick and passed.

When your mother got sick my mother was called to help nurse him. She figured out what was going on. She is the one that found out about your mother and you. She tried one time to visit but your grandmother was still very upset about your mother passing and was afraid we would take you.

She begged her to stay away and not tell your father about you. My mother kept her promise until she passed away herself.

On the day my mother passed there was an envelope for your father that told him why he had been sick. It also said there was a child. It did not say if you were a girl or boy, or where you were. My brother had to find you on his own. He never even asked me. Not that I would have told him!

Once he found you and learned you were a girl he set you up a bank account and walked away. He is a coward in my eyes. So that brings us to now.

I will not share any information other than I already have about your father. No one here will stop you from looking into him if you so choose. But the people here are all ready to be your family. No matter what you do.

On your 18th birthday the Alpha will come to visit you. He will give you the choice to join his pack, or to leave. I hope you decide to stay. He is a good and fair Alpha that lets you live the way you want as much as possible. The people here have already opened their arms and hearts to you, and now consider you family.

I bring all the information back over to the bed. Then I go through and check the drawers and cubby holes again to make sure I have everything. I found one more folder in the bottom drawer. So I threw it on the bed. I put back the information as I read it, so I know what I’ve read. At about two I finally got to the face change and passcode information.

After about an hour of messing with it I have all that changed. Doing the face and eye stuff was worse than setting up an iPhone!

I decided to go soak in the tub for a bit before getting ready for dinner.

Dennis shows up at the gate right at five thirty. I buzz him in. He jumps out and opens the door for me.

I called Sarah at the diner and she said tonight is lasagna night. Of course they have the usual hamburgers or steak to choose from.

Oh ok great! Lasagna sounds yummy.

When we walk in the door a bell goes off. I followed him to a table.

A woman walks out with a soda and a closed bottled water.

Hi! I’m Sarah! You must be Josie! I’ve been waiting for you to come in!

Hi! Yeah just trying to get settled. I am sure you will see me often!

If I do not see or hear from you once a day then I call Dennis! Haha

Most people come in at least once a day, a lot are here three times a day!

Really?

Oh yeah! I am like the pack house kitchen. We do a buffet for breakfast, it’s usually the same stuff every day.

At lunch it is whatever it is, no choice. Then dinner is always burger and fries, steak and baked potato, and a third option that changes daily. Tonight is lasagna.

Dennis already let me know you only drink unopened bottled water. He only drinks that soda. So now you too are even! Hahaha

What would you like to eat tonight? We both say lasagna at the same time. What dressing? I get blue cheese, he gets ranch.

Deserts are always some type of cake and pie. Today it is German chocolate cake, and blackberry pie.

I’ll have the cake. I say

I’ll have the pie.

That’s only because you had the cake for breakfast! Hahaha

Yup! Of course!

Some people come over and say hi. Everyone seems very nice.

It is not long before there is lasagna, salad, garlic bread, and our deserts filling our table.

We don’t talk much while we eat. When we get to the desert, the cop at the guard shack that did all the talking comes in.

Hey Sarah! I’m here to get dinner!

Be right out!

He comes over and introduces himself.

Hi Josie! I’m Greg! I’m Sarah’s mate. That’s our son Josh over there. How are you settling in?

Oh I’m doing great thanks!

Here Greg!

Ok, well see ya later!

He grabs his bags and kisses her cheek and heads back out the door.

Hey it’s after seven we need to get you inside the gate.

Yeah I guess so. If I wanted to change the lock down times, could I do that?

Sure! But I would not recommend it. At least wait until you have read and seen all the information first. Trust me. He has the times set for a reason.

Oh ok.

Let’s get you in your gate!

He takes me home and then leaves out before he gets stuck inside.

I head in and lock things as I head down. Once down I curl up on the bed and keep reading the information.

I must have fallen asleep because I’m jerked awake with the security beeping. I go over to the screens. The one for the back left of the land is lit up. There looks to be a skinny human bouncing on the fence. It walks into, bounces back, and does the same thing over and over.

I get out my phone and call Denis.

Hey! What’s up? He answers on the first ring.

There’s a person jumping on my fence!

Which screen number?

Ok I’m on it! Watch the screen I’ll wave at you! Call ends.

I go back and watch as a black blur runs by. Then comes back and jumps up and down and howls. Then leaves. The person is gone so I guess when he blurred by he took them with him.

He calls back.

You're good now.

Tell Blackie I said hi back!

I sure will!

How was that person continuously running into the fence? Is it strong enough current?

That wasn’t a human. That was a low level vampire. It’s all in your information. You really need to read it, Josie.

I am! A vampire? Really? Wow! Perhaps if I get to the part with vampires I’ll be able to stay awake!

Haha ok! I have to get back to patrol sweet dreams, little wolf!

Vampires are real? Cool!

I head back to bed. When I wake up my phone says ten am. I slept late! I might have to set an alarm. It’s too dark and cozy down here!

I got up and showered. I head into town. I stop at the diner. Today is sub sandwiches and chips.

Then I head over to the grocery, and the hardware.

I need basic food supplies. Then Carla wants lots of plants in the den. I also get growing lights so the plants will live down there. When I pull into the gate Dennis is there. He waves. I let us both in.

What have you got there?

Plants and lamps.

Ahh for the Den?

Yes! It’s a Carla thing.

It is a wolf thing. All the ones with dens inside want plants. Do you know how to do the lamps?

Oh yeah!

Good, because I do not want to be in another wolf's den unless I have to be!

Yeah. Carla does not like people in whatever room she decides is her den.

Again, it is a normal wolf thing. The only one she will let in without a big fuss is who she wants to mate with. Anyone else and there will be a fuss big or small depending on the situation. But still a fuss.

But I can help you take all this to the door. I came to cut you a running path along the fence.

That would be great! After you're done can I borrow the mower? I want to cut back this wild in the front for some flower beds.

Sure! It’s a rider. You know how to use one?

No, I have only used a push.

I’ll show you before I leave. It’s easy enough.

Ok great!

By the time she comes back outside he’s driving the mower back up.

I did two rows around the fence line leaving about three feet between the fence and the path. Come on over, and I’ll show you how to use the mower.

He shows me. I proved to him I could use it. I get to mowing and he leaves.

The mowing goes so fast that I mow the front and the sides. I'll leave the rest for now.

Then I move big rocks around to outline a drive with a circle and a parking area.

I hear a honk, so I buzz the gate.

Dennis is back. He loads up the mower and drops off some burgers for me. Compliments me on the yard. Then leaves. I head inside. I’m starving! I ate both burgers! When I look at the phone it is already seven!

I get the kitchen cleaned and head downstairs. After a long soak in the tub I curl up and continue my reading. Finally I get to the folder that is called Things that go bump in the Night. Haha Uncle must have had a sense of humor!

Vampires. Everything to know about vampires. All their levels. What myths are true, which ones are not.

The oldest level vampires can walk in the sun. There’s a middle level that can come out a little before sunset, and stay out a little past sunrise but in the shadows during both times. The lowest level dirt sleepers can only come out after the sun sets. Holy water, crosses, and garlic are myths and have no effect on a vampire. You can only kill a vampire by decapitation. A wooden stake will put it to sleep, but it will wake back up as long as it still has its head.

The oldest vampires can live as a human does. A middle level does sleep during the day usually in a basement in a box. A lower level has to sleep in the ground, or in a tomb that has dirt on the ground.

They are all skinny and pale looking but the lower the level the more sickly looking they are.

They all have hypnosis abilities. Never look one in the eyes. If you can not tell and look in their eyes there will be a red ring around the white part. None can fly, but the older ones can teleport if they have been to a place before. They do have to be asked in.

There are hybrids. They are rare. The hybrids still have a partial red ring, some do have hypnosis abilities, and they also have to be asked in.

Good rule of thumb. Never invite someone in. Just open the door. A human or a shifter will know automatically to walk in. If they wait to be asked, beware.

Vampires that you will likely see at the fence are low level vampires. The warmer the ground the more active they are. Unfortunately the cottage is in a walking path and the first land on the edge of town that is dark.

The vampires are the reason for the fence.

Rouges. Nasty wolves that have lost their soul.

They mainly come around during the days of the full moon. They smell the unmated females around the pack.

They look like dirty shaggy wolves. They have all of their wolf abilities.They can not talk. They have foam sometimes around the mouth. They smell like rotting meat. They are extremely violent. Never approach one.

The heavy metal doors, windows, and locks are for the rouges.

There are also other types of shifters than just wolves. Every animal has a shifter counterpart. They will look human then when they shift they will look like their animal. Their human will have traits of their shifter. They all vary. It is almost impossible to know. Usually the only way is by smell. A good wolf nose will smell that a shifter is not human. The even better ones can learn the different shifter smells. On our mountain there are only wolf shifters.

There are elves, fairies also called fae, dwarfs. These are all rare. They do not have any land near our mountain. These creatures are proud. They will not try to hide from you. They are tricky but not usually dangerous. However, if you meet one, always be careful of the words you say and how you say them.

That’s every creature that is real and out there in our world.
