Chapter1
The sound of my heels echoed, as I walked through the door. Roses sprawled on the bed, and the scented candles lined the path which I walked through. On the bed, I see a boxed parcel and beside it, a note box draped with a yellow knot. I placed my ass on the bed and lifted the notebook. “OPEN IT ALONE,” it read on the cover. My heart dropped for a minute. Today, I was supposed to meet with Jake Carly, my high school sweetheart. Two months ago, I bumped into him at a premier event my company hosted. He mistakenly spilt the red wine on my white dress while I was sitting next to where he stood. “What the hell,” I gasped, my mouth widening. I was pissed, my favorite dress had just been ruined. “I am sorry, s**t, can I take you somewhere quickly? I’d order a new dress for you to quickly change into,” the familiar voice spoke, while I stared down at my dress as he spoke. Slowly, I lifted my face from my dress to his pants, up to his perfectly tailored suit, then to his face. “Jake? Carly?” I let out in surprise. “ Wait.. whoa.. Vanessa?” His palms folded as he placed it in his mouth. “Oh my goodness,” he let out, stretching his hands and I placed my hands on his. With my hands in his, he firmly held my hand and softly pulled me up. We both walked out of the hall. He opened his car door and led me in. “First, let’s get you changed up,” he said, turning to the driver's seat. In minutes, we arrived at a Channel store where he got me two new dresses. We got back to the car, and he opened the door for me again. My hands met his fingers, he wore a gold ring. “I am guessing you are married?” I asked, my heart beat dropped slowly. “Oh..” he smiled, looking at his fingers and back at me. “Practically, yes, but not to the woman of my dreams,” he responded, chuckling. What did he mean by not the woman of his dreams? “How about you?” he asked, looking inquisitively. “I’m not married, but I am dating,” I replied. “For how long?” he asked. “For a year now, next Friday will mark our one-year anniversary,” I replied, looking at his face. “How about you? Do you have any kids?” He nodded, “No, I am child free. Like I said, I did not marry the woman of my dreams. My parents wanted that,” he responded with a dry laugh. I noticed he turned to look at me, “So, if you don't mind, can I take you out this weekend?” he asked. At this point, I did not know if I should say yes to him or not. “Please say yes,” he begged, and I smiled, “I will have to get back to you on that, okay?” “Okay sure,” we exchanged contact as we dropped our iPhones close. Later that evening, there came a knock on my door. I smiled, I knew who it was. Only one person had the key to my door. “Come in,” I said loudly, grinning ear to ear. The door creaked open, and the familiar scent filled my nose. I didn't move, instead, my eyes remained on the screen where I was working. The footsteps got closer behind me, a touch on my shoulder followed by a soft massage which I closed my eyes to. Harris inched closer to me and gave me a kiss on my forehead. “My baby, I miss you. I know you don't want to speak to me,” Harris let out. My eyes met his, trying hard not to smile. The previous day we fought and didn't talk to ourselves. “I missed you too,” I shamelessly agreed while waiting for an apology from Harris. I spun my seat around and looked at him. He did not bring any flowers or gifts. No efforts. Harris inched closer to my lips and I moved my face away. “What is wrong??” Harris asked. “So you are not going to apologize for yesterday?” I asked, and he touched his chin, taking a step back, while he placed his hands on his waist. “I told you, Cassie is just my friend. I am not sexually or physically attracted to her. You don't trust me?” he defended. “She is just your friend, but she spent the night at your place because she got stuck at night? Count two, she calls you at night and you guys chat? Count three, you have her thirst trap photos saved on your phone, and you came here telling me, "Oh Cassie, is just my friend?” I questioned, my eyes meeting him as I spoke, but he looked away. “You must really think I am a fool, or I am a child. Just say sorry, but no you can't. I am not even saying you should leave her alone. Just be f*****g accountable for goodness’ sake,” I complained. At this point, I wasn't ready to get into another argument. “We didn't have s*x, and you are just overthinking things for real,” Harris defended. At this point, i was already beginning to boil at his excuse. “You know what? Harris? I really don’t want to argue, and I have work to finish up. My deadline is close and I don’t want to get my mood ruined, so if you don’t mind, can you please leave before I do or say something regrettable. Please!” I said, showing him the door. “Wait, are you for real?” Harris asked like a nineteen-year-old. I looked at him, “Yes, please leave. When you want to do the right thing. You know where to find me,” I responded. This wasn’t the Harris I knew any longer. It was as if the moment I began to brag about him to my friends, he changed to someone unrecognizable. “Okay then,” Harris responded and walked to the door while I watched. I called out, “Yes, by the way, I need my key, leave it by the door.” “Okay fine,” he said, shutting the door behind him. I spun my chair around and immediately my phone pinged. Lighting my phone, the notification read, “HI VANESSA, HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT IT?” “Jake Carly,” I mumbled. “YES, I’M IN,” I hit the send button.
