CRYING IS FOR THE DEAD
The heavy iron gates of the city prison groaned as they swung open, shutting behind Seraphina with a deafening loud clang. For five long years, those gates had kept her locked away from the world. Seraphina stood on the dusty pavement outside, taking a slow, deep breath. The fresh air felt almost foreign against her skin, crisp and clean compared to the suffocating air of her prison cell. She was pale and visibly thin, her clothes hanging loose on her frame, but beneath her worn appearance, a dangerous fire burned in her dark eyes. She looked back and forth along the empty stretch of road, taking in the emptiness of the open horizon. Suddenly, the low roar of high performance engines shattered the quiet place. A convoy of five shiny black luxury SUVs pulled up directly in front of her, blocking the street in a tight formation. Seraphina recognized the customized gold license plate instantly. Without a second of hesitation, she opened the door of the middle vehicle and climbed into the leather backseat. The door clicked shut, sealing out the noise of the outside world, and the convoy sped away into the distance. Sitting in the corner of the backseat was an elderly man holding a polished wooden cane with a silver wolf head handle. It was Don Victor Vance, her grandfather, the legendary head of the continent's biggest crime syndicate, and the only real family she had left on earth. Five years ago, Don Victor had moved mountains to keep her out of prison. He knew deep down that his granddaughter had not committed grand corporate embezzlement and arson, a brutal financial offense carrying a strict five year sentence. He had assembled the best legal team money could buy and pulled every political string available across the country. But Seraphina had been stubborn as a goat and foolishly in love. The moment she stood before the judge and used her own mouth to plead guilty just to protect her boyfriend, David, every legal card her grandfather held became useless. Her confession sealed her fate, leaving Don Victor powerless to stop the gavel from falling. Inside the quiet car, Don Victor looked at her carefully, taking in her thin frame. "How was life in prison?" he asked, breaking the long silence. Seraphina didn't offer a dramatic story or complain. She simply unzipped her faded gray inmate jacket, peeled it off, and tossed it onto the floorboards. She was left wearing only a simple white sleeveless singlet, revealing lean, defined muscle and faint scars on her arms, the result of continuous daily fights and gruesome physical training to survive inside without being crushed by the hardened inmates. "Cold," she replied, her voice flat and utterly devoid of emotion. "You threw away your name and freedom for that boy," Don Victor said, watching her every movement closely. "Do you still think he was worth it?" "No," she said coldly, staring straight ahead at the dark road. "They took your inheritance, merged your assets, and built an empire on your back," Don Victor continued, leaning on his cane. "Are you going to sit there and cry about it?" "Crying is for the dead," she snapped softly, her nonchalant mask firmly in place. She kept her cool, her posture relaxed and indifferent, until the convoy slowed down at the city's roundabout. Seraphina glanced out the tinted window, and her eyes landed on a massive digital billboard towering over the high rise buildings. Prominently displayed were the polished, smiling faces of the "Power Couple of the Year" David and Rachel Sterling. The moment her eyes hit the screen, something primal twisted in Seraphina's entire body. The icy nonchalance shattered from the inside out. Her skin felt like it was on fire, a sudden rush of hot adrenaline surging through her veins. Her breathing hit a sharp, shallow rhythm. Her knuckles turned plain white as her hands pulled into tight fists, her nails biting deep into her palms until her skin hurt. Don Victor slowly pulled a thick cigar from his coat, lit it with a golden lighter, and took a deep, deliberate puff. Through the swirling gray smoke, his sharp eyes observed her every expression, every little reaction, and the vein pulsing on her neck. Five years ago, the soft, innocent girl he knew would have broken down in tears at the sight of that ultimate betrayal. But this Seraphina? This woman looked like she was ready to tear those two rats off the billboard with her bare hands and rip their throats out. Don Victor smiled faintly behind his cigar. Yes, he needed that anger to burn hot. The convoy didn't stop. It sped through the city road, winding down the private roads until it finally pulled up to the massive, heavily guarded black iron gates of the Vance Estate. Before the car could even come to a complete stop on the paved driveway, Seraphina shoved the heavy door open. Without waiting for anyone to open it for her, or for her grandfather to step out, she jumped down onto the concrete. Slinging her worn inmate jacket over one bare shoulder, she walked straight past the bowed heads of the armed guards stationed at the entrance and headed inside the mansion, leaving a trail of pure venom in her wake.
