CHAPTER ONE : Arrival in the storm. Amara Cole arrived in Canada with one suitcase, a fractured family, and the quiet belief that nothing good ever started in the cold. The airport smelled like coffee and disinfectant. people moved fast, confident, like they belonged. She didn't. Her fingers trembled inside her sleeves as she followed her aunt through sliding doors and into a world that felt too wide, too clean, too indifferent. " You'll like it here", her aunt said for the third time. Amara nodded for the third time. she had learned that nodding saved energy. North Ridge High School stood like a concrete warning the next morning. Grey bricks.Tall windows. Snow packed tight against the walls as if even nature was trying to escape. Student poured in laughing, complaining, living. Amara lingered outside, breath fogging, heart pounding. Just walk in, she told herself. Just survive. Inside, lockers slammed like gunshots. Voices overlapped. Someone bumped her shoulders without apologizing. Another laughed too loudly. Her accent felt heavy on her tongue even when she said nothing. The guardian counselor barely looked at her face. " Here's your schedule. Lock's number 317. Don't be late to class". That was it. No welcome. No how are you adjusting. Just paper and rules. Her first class was English literature she arrived ten minutes late-lost, panicked, trying not to cry. The door cracked when she pushed it open every head turned. The teacher paused." Yes?". "I - sorry", Amara said, heat crawling up her neck. " I'm new". A few students whispered. Someone snorted. The teacher sighed. " Seat at the back. Quickly". Amara moved fast- too fast She collided with someone solid. Books exploded into the floor. " Are you kidding me?" a boy's voice snapped. She looked up. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair that looked like it never bothered obeying rules. His eyes were sharp- not curious, not amused. Annoyed. Like she had personally ruined his day. "I said sorry", she replied, automatically bending to gather her books. He didn't move. One of her notebook laid trapped beneath his shoe. "You walk around like you own the place?" He asked. Her hand froze mid air. She straightened slowly. "You were standing in the aisle". A hush fell over the room. The boy smiled-but it wasn't friendly. "Lucas", the teacher warned. Lucas. He leaned down slightly, voice low enough that only she could hear. "First day and you already want attention." Her chest tightened. Something old and angry stirred inside her. "Or maybe", she said quietly, " You're just not used to being challenged". A ripple of gasps. Lucas stared at her now- really stared.Like he was seeing her for the first time and didn't like what he found. "Sit.Down", the teacher snapped. Amara walked past him without looking back, pulse roaring in her ears. But she felt his eyes on her the entire period. Lunch was worse. She ate alone, pretending to scroll through her phone while watching groups form and reform like she didn't exist.Snow pressed against the cafeteria windows, trapping her inside her thoughts. That's when someone sat across from her. "Hey", a boy said gently."You're the new girl, right?". She looked up.Warm eyes. Easy smile. No edge. "I'm Ethan". Amara hesitated then nodded."Amara". Don't mind Lucas", Ethan added, lowering his voice."He's... like that". "Like what?". "Complicated". She almost laughed. The final bell rang too late and too soon. As Amara stepped into the hallway, someone grabbed her wrist. She spun around, heart leaping into her throat. Lucas Up close, he smiled like winter and something bitter. "You think you're brave?" he said quietly. "Speaking to me like that?". She pulled her hand free. "I think you should leave me alone". His jaw tightened. "You don't know where you've landed", he warned." This school doesn't forgive mistakes". She held his gaze, refusing to flinch. "Then maybe you should stop making them". For a moment something dangerous flickered in his eyes-not ange. Fear. Footsteps echoed nearby.Lucas stepped back instantly, expression closing. As he walked away, he said one last thing without turning around: "Be careful, Amara.People disappear here in ways no one talks about". She stood frozen in the hallway. And behind her, Ethan watched the entire exchange- his smile gone. CHAPTER TWO : First spark, first clashes Amara didn't sleep that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Luca's face in the hallway-not the arrogance, not the sharp words, but that split second of fear he hadn't managed to hide. People disappear here. She lay on her back, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling of her aunt's guest room, the heater clicking like it was counting down to something. Snow brushed softly against the window, innocent and quiet, like it didn't know it was suffocating the city. She told herself it was just intimidation. High School drama.Nothing more. But her chest didn't believe her. The next morning, North Ridge High felt colder. Not temperature-wise-emotionally. Whispers followed her.She caught fragments as she passed lockers. "...New girl..." "...Lucas doesn't get talked back to..." "... She's bold though..." Her grip tightened around her backpack straps. By the time she reached her locker, Someone was already there. Ethan. "Morning", he said, smiling like yesterday hadn't happened. She relaxed before she could stop herself. "Hi". "You okay?" He asked."You kinda look like you fought winter and lost". That earned a small laugh."Jet lag.and...everthing else". He leaned against the locker beside hers. "Lucas didn't bother you again, did he?" Her fingers froze on the lock. "No", she lied. Ethan studied her face for a moment, then nodded."If he does, tell me". She didn't ask why he sounded so sure he could help. English class felt heavier the second day. Lucas sat two rows ahead of her this time. He didn't turn around. Didn't acknowledge her. Didn't do anything. And somehow, that was worse. Every time the teacher asked a question, Lucas answered perfectly without raising his hand. When Amara spoke, the class listened-not because they respected her, but because they were waiting for something to go wrong. It didn't. She matched Lucas answer for answer. The air between them tightened like a pulled wire. After school, Snow fell harder. Amara was digging through her locker when a folded piece of paper slid onto the floor at her feet. She frowned, picked it up, unfolded it. You don't belong in this. No name.No explanation. Her stomach dropped. She looked around. Students moved normally. Laughing. Shoving. Living. Lucas stood at the end of the hall, talking to someone. His eyes flicked towards her just long enough to notice the paper in her hand. Then he walked away. She found Ethan by the exit. "Walk home?" he asked. She hesitated, then nodded. Outside, the snow swallowed sound. Their breath came out in clouds. "So", Ethan said lightly, "What made you move all the way here?". She swallowed."Didn't really have a choice". He didn't push."If you ever need someone to talk to... I'm around". She smiled, grateful- and guilty, for reasons she didn't understand yet. As they parted ways, she felt eyes on her again. Lucas stood across the street, hood up, phone pressed to his ear. He wasn't looking at her. He was watching the school. That night, Amara checked her phone before bed. A new message. Unknown Number. I warned you. Her heart slammed. Before she could respond, another message came through. Stay away from Ethan. You don't know what you're pulling him into. Her fingers trembled. She typed back one word. Why? The typing bubble appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again. Then the final message arrived. Because the last girl who didn't listen almost ruined all our lives. Amara stared at the screen, breath shallow And for the first time since arriving in Canada, she felt truly afraid.
