CHAPTER SIX : Silent Threats
Amara barely slept that night. Her mind replayed Lucas's words over and over.
"You decide whether you're willing to lie or disappear".
Disappear. The word echoed like footsteps in an empty hallway. She didn't know if it was literal. Metaphorical. Or both. All she knew was that staying invisible wasn't an option anymore.
Morning arrived grey and biting. Snow fell in thick, wet flakes. The school look like a fortress buried in white. She hugged her jacket tighter and clutched her bag like a shield.
Ethan met her at the corner, eyes worried.
"Amara, you don't have to face this alone", he said softly.
She forced a smile. "I know".
The office smelled of paper and polished wood. The vice principal, Ms Turner, say behind her desk, her posture perfect.
"Amara, thank you for coming. your guardian will join shortly", she said.
Amara's stomach churned. This wasn't a meeting. This was a trial.
As she sat, her phone vibrated in her pocket one message.
Unknown Number.
Say nothing. Don't flinch. And whatever you do... don't look at him directly.
Her heart froze.
The door opened. Lucas stepped in. His expression calm, almost unreadable.
Amara swallowed. She wanted to run. She wanted to scream. Instead, she sat, holding her hands on her lap.
Ms. Turner cleared her throat. "Amara, you've been linked in several reports..." She looked at Lucas briefly. "... With misconduct concerning students interactions".
Amara's head snapped up. "I-What ?".
Lucas leaned back, eyes cold. "I didn't report you. But someone else did".
She wanted to ask who. She wanted to demand answers. But the message pulsed in her mind. Don't look at him.
Hours felt like days. Questions came. Answers were vague. Threats were hidden between polite words. Every time she spoke, her words were twisted. Every time she stayed silent, suspicion grew.
By the end, Ms Turner gave her a look that was both warning and farewell.
"You'll hear from us tomorrow. In the mean time... keep your head down".
As Amara left the office, she ran into Ethan.
"They'll try to scare you", he said quietly.
"Don't let them. Don't let anyone control you*.
" I don't know if I can", she whispered.
He grabbed her hand. "You can. But... Lucas isn't the only problem".
Amara's stomach sank. "What do you mean?".
Ethan hesitated. His eyes darted to the hallway. "Tomorrow... you'll understand".
That night, she couldn't sleep. She stared at the ceiling, phone in hand. A new message appeared:
Tomorrow you'll make your first choice. And I promise... it won't be easy.
Amara's fingers shook.
The snow outside pressed against the windows quiet and relentless.
And for the first time, she realised the fight for her survival... had only just begun.
