CHAPTER SEVEN : Crossed Lines The morning air was sharp enough to sting, but Amara didn't notice. Her mind replayed the previous night message: Tomorrow, you'll make your first choice. And I promise... it won't be easy. Every step towards school felt heavier. Every laugh from other student felt louder, mocking somehow. She spotted Ethan waiting by the entrance, back pack slung over one shoulder. "Morning", she murmured, forcing herself to look normal. "You don't have to handle this alone", he said softly. "I do", she replied, trying to sound confident. "I promised myself I'd stay out of trouble". He frowned."Trouble doesn't need permission to find you here". In English class, the tension between her and Lucas was tangible. He sat across the room, not looking at her - and yet every time she dared to meet his gaze, his eyes burned into hers, unreadable, dangerous. The rest of the class seemed like background noise. She couldn't focus on Shakespeare, couldn't focus on her notes, couldn't focus on anything but the way Lucas jaw tightened whenever someone mentioned her. Then a whisper from behind: "Be careful Amara"... She turned slightly. It was Ethan, his eyes dark with concern. "What do you mean?" She whispered. "Just... don't trust anyone fully. Not here". Lunchtime. The cafeteria was a Whispers chased her everywhere she went. She tried to ignore them, tried to stay invisible, but it was impossible. And then she saw Lucas, leaning against a table, alone. Something about his posture, tense yet controlled, drew her in despite every warning in her mind. Before she could think, she was walking toward him. "You shouldn't be here alone", she said quietly. Lucas's eyes flicked up."And you shouldn't be talking to me. You're asking for trouble". "I can handle trouble", She shot back. He smirked, that dangerous curve of his lips - "Can you?". Before she could answer, Ethan appeared at her side. "Leave him alone", he said quietly, hand brushing hers. Lucas's gaze snapped to Ethan. For a heartbeat, the air between the three of them crackled. "You don't get to interfere", Lucas said, voice low and dangerous. "I don't care what you think", Ethan replied."I'm not letting her face this alone". Amara froze, realising she had no idea who to trust. Later, in the empty gym- the place Lucas had asked her to meet before - she found herself alone thinking. Her phone vibrated. Unknown Number. Choices have consequences. A shadow moved behind the bleachers. Lucas stepped out. Ethan voice called from the entrance. "Amara, wait". Lucas turned his gaze to her. "You have to choose. Do you stand with him... or do you stand with me?". Her chest tightened. Every instinct screamed. She opened her mouth to speak... A sound - sharp, metallic - echoed from the gym door. Someone was entering. She didn't know who. And before she could react... the lights went out.
