Chapter 1.
SCARLETT
I stepped out of the car, beaming with smiles. With confident strides, I made my way into the restaurant. Among the crowd, my eyes found Andrew almost instantly. He sat alone in the corner, his sleeves rolled up as he scrolled through his phone.
Yup, that was my husband.
My smile grew wider as I took my time to admire him. We've been married for about…a year, and every time I looked at him I couldn't help but feel lucky to have bagged such a catch.
Andrew was everything I wanted—caring, supportive, and on top of everything else, he was handsome. Not just 'good-looking,' but the kind of drop-dead handsome that makes you forget your own name. Yeah, exactly like that.
I took out a compact mirror from my purse and gave myself a final look.
Foundation….check!
Mascarra…..check!
Lip gloss…uh, a little more.
I applied a little and smacked my lips to make it blend.
My eyes lit up as I realized he was already staring at me. His amused gaze remained fixated on me until I got to the table.
“Why were you standing there?” he asked, standing up to pull out my chair.
“What do you think?” I retorted, a teasing smile playing on my lips as I sat down. With my head a little high, I added, “I was trying to look good for my husband.”
He mouthed an ‘oh’, his eyes carefully scanning me. “Nice makeup?” he said, sounding unsure. Throwing his hands, he added with a chuckle, “Or…what am I supposed to say?”
Despite being the ‘perfect man’, Andrew sucks at giving compliments. It was that bad.
Oh, one more thing. He wasn't much of a talker, but I didn't mind. He treated me well and honestly, that was all that really mattered.
“Happy anniversary, darling,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I'm glad to be doing forever with you.”
Tears filled my eyes as I said that. You know that immense joy you get when you're living your dream life? That's just it.
He nodded with a small smile. His eyes did more of the talking—those eyes that I had found comfort and love.
“Let’s get something to eat-”
“Before that…” I cut him off before he could finish. “Gifts.”
His eyes went wide. “Shoot.”
I leaned back on the chair, my brows knit in displeasure. “You forgot?! It's our anniversary, babe!”
“I'm sorry…” he muttered, raking his fingers through his hair. “I'll fix something. I promise.”
“It’s fine,” I replied, biting the inside of my mouth. “You always give me gifts, so you're pardoned. I have something for you when we get home.”
“What's it?” he asked, his voice hinting at curiosity.
I leaned closer. “It's a secret. You'll have to wait until we get home to find out.” I winked.
He responded with a nod.
Our order arrived and we ate quietly. In about an hour, we were out of the restaurant, heading home.
Andrew was on his phone the whole time, while I stared through the window, envisaging how the evening would go.
We would cuddle and watch movies, spending the rest of the night wrapped in each other’s arms, followed by hot s*x.
Then, I would announce the good news to him. I was a hundred percent sure he'd be thrilled to know that I was carrying his baby. Our baby.
He had always mentioned the word ‘family’. Always.
And what does it mean to raise a family? Of course, it involves having children. Unlike the way I was brought up, my children will be loved and well cared for.
“What are you thinking about?” Andrew's voice snapped me from my thoughts.
I smiled. “Us.” My voice came out hoarse.
He raised a brow. “What about us?”
“I love you, Andrew Forrester,” I said instead, leaning in to peck his lips.
“Me too,” he responded.
Just as the driver pulled into the driveway, my phone rang loudly. I sighed deeply upon seeing the caller’s ID—Nirvana.
Nirvana is my friend…I guess. I can't find the right words to describe our relationship. We used to be best friends until Andrew came into the picture. Things got strained after my marriage, especially since she never liked him.
Andrew was my happiness, and anyone opposing him means opposing my own happiness.
“Are you coming?”
“I'll join you inside, darling,” I replied. “I have to take this call.”
I picked up and waited for her to say something, but all I could hear was her erratic breathing.
“I didn't answer the phone to hear you breathing loudly, Niv.” I rolled my eyes.
“Where are you, Scar? Let's meet,” she said. “No… I mean, I'll come to your house. It's urgent.”
She sounded terrified.
I blinked. “Is everything okay with you?”
“Yes…No… I really don't know!” she stuttered.
“You can come over,” I muttered reluctantly. “It had better be super urgent, or I'll kill you for ruining my anniversary night.”
“This is about Andrew, Scar.”
I scoffed. “When was it never about Andrew? We've never had a proper conversation in years! All you ever say is ‘I don't like him’, ‘I hate his guts’, ‘why are you with him?’” I let my voice trail off, sucking in a deep breath.
I bit my bottom lip. “I'm hanging up and don't bother coming over. Stop calling me too and in case you're wondering, I'm done with you, Nirvana. I don't need any bad energy, especially now that I'm starting a family.”
“Andrew is not who you think he is. He's been lying to you, and I'm saying this not because I hate him, but because it's a fact. I have proof. Let's meet, please.”
I ran my fingers through my hair. “We’ve been married for a year and I know everything about him. I don't need you feeding me with more lies.”
“Why are you being a blockhead when it comes to Andrew? You've refused to see the signs, Scarlett Darren. You know Dorothy, right? That wussy cousin of his-”
I shook my head, slightly irritated.
“Goodbye, Nivana,” I hung up, not allowing her to finish her sentence.
This was a happy night for me, and I don’t need anyone ruining it.
I stepped out of the car and went in. Taking the stairs, I hummed softly, tapping my fingers against the rails.
“Did you wait for so long, darling?” I said as I pushed the doorknob of our bedroom.
My world stilled.
Everything damn thing paused—including my heart.
For a moment, it seemed like I forgot how to breathe.
I was expecting my husband to be in bed, unbuttoning his shirt or something. Sure enough, he was on the bed, but he wasn't alone.
He was in bed with his cousin!
