Chapter 1 The Fake Heiress
"Have you heard that the fake heiress is here today?"
"Fake heiress? Evelyn?"
In the banquet hall, a few women who looked like socialites were whispering with wine glasses in hand.
Today was the banquet of the Norwin Chamber of Commerce, but clearly, the attention was not on this event. It was because the Johnson family, which always had only one daughter, suddenly had another daughter appear.
The once highly regarded Evelyn had suddenly fallen from grace, losing her former glory. Even her fiancé was now constantly around the second daughter in Johnson's family.
Everyone speculated that the true heiress of the Johnson family was the second daughter.
Suddenly, a soft, fragile female voice came through, instantly confirming everyone's suspicions.
"Evelyn, even if you don't like me, you didn't have to pour red wine on me."
The second young lady was seen with tearful eyes, nervously clutching the hem of her dress, looking gloomily at Evelyn, who was about her age.
"What's wrong, Vivian?"
Mrs. Johnson hurried over upon hearing the commotion, only to see a large wine stain on the custom-made white princess dress she had specially ordered for Vivian Johnson.
"Evelyn! What are you doing?" With that, Mrs. Johnson raised her hand, and a slap landed on Evelyn's face.
Evelyn turned her head, feeling a burning pain on her face, and soon a handprint appeared.
"What kind of older sister are you!" Mrs. Johnson was furious. "For the past 24 years, even though we weren't that close, We have been sincere and genuine with you. Even Vivian came back, I still considered you my own daughter. How could you bully Vivian as soon as she returned!"
Evelyn explained anxiously, "Mom, I didn't do it."
"It's not her fault," Vivian sobbed. "It's my fault. I knew Evelyn wouldn't like it. I shouldn't have worn this dress."
"Vivian, you're too kind! This was specially made for you. It doesn't matter if she likes it or not!" Mrs. Johnson comforted her gently, then turned angrily to Evelyn.
"Evelyn, I never thought you could be so malicious. Just because we didn't make you a custom-made dress, you treated Vivian so cruelly! I shouldn't have allowed you to come here in the first place!"
Mrs. Johnson's voice was loud, drawing the attention of many guests, and the people around began to whisper.
"I heard Evelyn isn't the biological daughter of the Johnson family, but Vivian is."
"Tsk tsk, Evelyn is so ungrateful. The Johnson family raised her for so many years, and she did this to them."
"Appearances can be deceiving. Evelyn is so malicious."
Listening to the insults around her and watching her mother fuss over Vivian, Evelyn forced a bitter smile.
Now, she understood everything.
All the talks about her being loved by her parents, about Vivian coming back, and about her still being their daughter were lies!
She was just someone who could be abandoned at any time.
At this moment, Evelyn's face still carried some pain, the rising temperature reminding her that her cheek was already swollen.
She curled her lips into a cold smile.
'How much force did Mrs. Johnson use?!'
Listening to the discussions around her, Vivian's face betrayed a barely noticeable hint of satisfaction. Then she pretended to be weak, pulling on Mrs. Johnson, who was about to get her new clothes and said softly, "Evelyn didn't mean to dirty my clothes. Please don't be mad at her..." Then she looked at Evelyn. "Evelyn, I know you didn't do it on purpose. Since you don't like me wearing this dress, I won't wear it anymore."
Vivian looked delicate, and her voice was soft, causing Mrs. Johnson immediately give in and gently comforted her, "It's all Evelyn's fault. I'll go get you some clothes." With that, she left the room.
At this point, Evelyn was also quite angry. Even if she had been tolerant before, she no longer wanted to endure it.
It was clear that all of this was orchestrated by Vivian, yet no one believed her! Since that was the case, she no longer needed to take care of the identity that never truly belonged to her!
Evelyn gave a cold laugh, took two steps forward, grabbed a wine glass from the side, and splashed it directly onto Vivian's chest!
"Ah!" Vivian hadn't expected Evelyn to dare do such a thing and cried out.
"Alright, now I've really poured it." Evelyn paused, then curved her lips into a bright and defiant smile. "Exactly, you're right. I don't like it, so take it off."
With that, Evelyn straightened up, looking directly at Vivian, who was already frightened by the scene. Then, she raised an eyebrow, like a proud swan.
At this moment, Vivian was completely at a loss for what to do, and the words she wanted to say were stuck in her throat.
The gaze of the surrounding people felt like sharp blades, making her feel both ashamed and furious.
Vivian couldn't help but lower her head, once again pretending to be innocent to hide the malice in her eyes.
"Evelyn Johnson!" came an angry shout as Ethan Lewis hurried over.
He had been talking with some business partners when the commotion caught his attention.
Upon closer inspection, Ethan realized it was his fiancée Vivian being bullied, and the culprit was Evelyn.
Ethan pulled Vivian behind him, his face dark. "Vivian is your younger sister! How can you treat her like that?! Is it because I'm going to marry her? I've told you before, only the real daughter of the Johnson family can marry me! If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for not being the biological daughter of the Johnson family!"
Such a display of arrogance almost made Evelyn feel sick. She looked at Ethan Lewis with disgust, wondering how she had been so blind before to think he was a decent man.
She was now grateful she wasn't the biological daughter of the Johnson family, otherwise having to face these people every day would be a fate worse than death!
Speaking of which, she only found out a month ago that she wasn't the biological daughter of the Johnson family.
Evelyn never imagined that the home she had lived in for 24 years wasn't truly hers, and the Johnson couple, who had always been strict with her, weren't her real parents.
She used to think their strictness was to raise her well, but now she realized it was because there was no blood relation, so they were naturally unable to feel a bond with her.
On the other hand, Vivian had fully integrated herself into the Johnson family within just a month of returning. And Mrs. Johnson, feeling guilty towards Vivian, often took her to various gatherings.
Even Ethan Lewis, who was originally Evelyn's fiancé, abandoned his promise of a lifetime together and proposed to Vivian.
In just a month, Evelyn lost her home, her parents, and her fiancé.
Evelyn no longer wanted to stay there; she was afraid that if she stayed any longer, the foolish cells would start to infect her.
"You're still smiling!" Evelyn's smile only fueled Ethan's anger, and he raised his hand to strike.
However, the slap didn't land; instead, it was intercepted in midair by someone.
Ethan turned his face in anger, ready to curse, but upon seeing the person's face, his anger abruptly vanished. "Kane... Mr. Kane..."
Everyone knew that the Kane family in Norwin, with a century-old business, owned almost 80% of the city's industries, including the hotel they were currently in. Furthermore, the heir of the Kane family was William Kane.
It is rumored that he overcame all opposition, and as soon as he took office, he made a series of bold decisions to reorganize the Kane Group. He was resolute and ruthless, showing no mercy even to his own family members.
But what brought Mr. Kane here?
It seemed he knew Ethan's ex-fiancée!
"This birthday party is quite the spectacle!" The cold young man in a bespoke suit stood still, quietly watching the group with a smile on his lips but no trace of amusement in his eyes.
*****
Not far away.
A middle-aged man was drawn by the sound. He frowned as he looked at the woman at the center of attention and was immediately stunned!
This woman looked just like the young mistress from the Harrison family!
'Could... Evelyn is the granddaughter that Mr. Harrison has been searching for all these years?’
Thinking of this, the man quickly took out his phone to snap a photo for his boss, but then reconsidered and lowered his hand.
Appearance was not enough to support his guess.
The man remembered that Mr. Harrison had said the lost granddaughter had a light red butterfly-shaped birthmark behind her ear, and for years, Mr. Harrison had been searching for her based on this mark.
Realizing this, the man kept his eyes fixed on Evelyn, afraid of missing anything.
Not far away, Evelyn seemed to sense his gaze. She turned slightly, revealing the red mark on the back of her neck.
Seeing the mark, the man didn't hesitate anymore. He picked up his phone and dialed a number. "Mr. Harrison, I think... I've found your lost granddaughter."
