Chapter1
APRIL'S POV
“Happy 28th birthday, my love!” I giggled cheekily in my husband's ear, sliding my hands around him proudly as he exchanged pleasantries with the small gathering of friends who were gathered to celebrate his birthday.
The evening air was warm and lively, just as my heart was. Butterflies spread in my stomach as I thought about telling Lucien the good news about my pregnancy.
Lucien would be so excited to the moon and back at the news of him becoming a father. Although he didn't say it to my face, I knew how badly he wanted a child. Often I see him staring at little kids playing on the streets with such adoration and yearning in his eyes. Other times, he would just gaze at random baby pictures on the internet.
Having visited the clinic several times and undergoing several tests, I was finally pregnant!
Instinctively, my hands shifted to my tiny baby bump and I swallowed excitedly, wondering if I should tell Lucien about the situation right now or leave it till when we got home.
No, I shook my head deciding against the latter. The perfect timing was here in front of all these people.
After Lucien had addressed the guests, appreciating them for their presence, he made his way towards me. I smiled even wider as our eyes connected. The sight of Lucien couldn't stop giving me the butterflies. I loved him so much with everything I had. I loved him so much that it hurt.
The love left me breathless. It was overwhelming.
“I wrapped you a beautiful birthday present. It's in one of the rooms. Do you want to see it now?” I looked up at Lucien with a smile, but to my surprise, he didn't return the smile.
And that was when it struck me, he hadn't responded to my birthday greeting earlier either.
Why was he in a sour mood on his big day?
“Before we go to see the present though, I have an important announcement to make,” I continued with a rushed voice, gathering the courage to reveal my good news. “I'd love to do it on the stage with everyone watching,”
“Can I talk to you in private?” Lucien interjected, regarding me with a bored look, like he hadn't heard me speak. The way he sized me up and down made me nervous but I managed to maintain my composure.
“Didn't you hear me, Lucien? I said…”
“Don't you dare argue with me, April!” Lucien snapped, cutting me short. His tone was harsh enough to cut through me like a knife.
“Fine, what do you want to talk ab–” I started, but the rest of the words froze in my throat as I caught sight of the familiar figure walking towards us with light, brisk steps.
The heavily curved lady was dressed in a flowing blue gown that accentuated her body shape. She looked young and her vibes were similar to that of a runway model.
My eyes widened and my jaws tightened as I recognized the figure. It was Lena, my foster sister who abandoned Lucien on the day of their wedding ten months ago.
When had she come back, and why does the air stink with so much…tension?
I got married as a substitute to Lucien to save his family from national humiliation after his bride jilted him at the altar, leaving only a note and no trace of her whereabouts.
Now imagine my perplexity of seeing Mrs runaway bride at my husband's birthday party looking so carefree, like she had done nothing wrong.
“What are you doing here, Lena?” I asked as I walked towards her, my tone sharp and mixed with resentment.
Lena's lips curled into a smirk as she regarded me. “What does it look like? Lucien invited me to his birthday party and I had to attend. Wait, shouldn't you be glad?”
Without sparing me a second glance, Lena walked up to Lucien and kissed him on the lips before snaking a hand across his waist. She gazed at me with a challenging look, each blink laced with hostility.
My heart shattered as Lucien smiled fondly at her before returning the kiss. He looked up at me, his eyes dark with undesire. “Lena and I are back together for good. I've been meaning to tell you that she is pregnant for me,”
Now forget about the feeling of cold water being poured over my head, I felt like I was drowning in an ocean of ice, unable to escape. Panic clawed at me and I felt dizzy. My eyes narrowed in shock at the careless remark. “H–how is that possible? Pregnant–? But I'm also preg–”
“Lena and I don't owe you an explanation, but if you must know, I'm tired of sticking around in an unproductive marriage,” Lucien dropped the bombshell. “I'm calling it quits, April. I'm demanding a divorce,”
Taking the cue, Lena reached into her handbag and brought out a stack of paper which she pushed at me.
I died inside. His eyes said it all. Lucien regretted our marriage and it hurt. His words felt like an invisible hand was choking me so hard that I feared I might suffocate from lack of air.
The fact that the guests stood up to leave signaling the end of the party did nothing to help my mood, not even the fact that his best friend, Logan begged him to reconsider his words made the pain I felt any lighter.
My evening definitely didn't go as planned. When I had kissed Lucien happy birthday, I envisioned telling everyone, including him about my pregnancy. I imagined him kissing the hell out of me as he lifted me in the air in bridal style while showering me with praises.
I imagined all of that, but divorce papers weren't part of the imagination. I swear, it wasn't.
For ten months, I was Lucien's dutiful wife. For ten months, I loved him flawlessly like a fool. It didn't make sense that he had to break my heart like this.
“Lucien…think about what we've shared,” Tears welled up in my eyes, but I sucked it in, especially as my husband maintained an impassive expression.
“I refuse to have anything to do with you. Sign the papers and leave at once. Lena is the only family I have now. The seed in her stomach is enough proof
,” Lucien said in a firm voice just as Lena smirked, enjoying my misery.
