{QUEEN POV part 1}
Four hours into yet another long and boring 8hour shift with doctor BoB tap dancing on my last damn nerve. I swear he's doing this on purpose. Some sort of maniacal yet elaborate plan conspiring against me for taking over soon as I receive my license allowing him to step down once and for all so he completely messes up driving our patients away over to the human clinic up in the human town. May sound paranoid but honestly what other reason would he have for this madness he's subjecting this pack to. Within the first two hours of my shift, he had already nearly overdosed 3 patients who only came in for a simple routine physical check-up. No meds were even required to do this and one who has been doing this job for nearly 48 years should know what one is doing. Especially when you are responsible for the lives and well-being of others. I mean how do you overdose a patient on morphine if you are only supposed to simply check their breathing and take their vitals before sending them on their way... I even walked in on him prepping a patient for surgery when there was not one surgery scheduled for today! Not a single thing was on the board alerting him to do any surgical procedures. Like what the hell! And the patient himself only came in to seek medical treatment due to the fact he had a mild case of food poisoning, Like what was bob gonna do? Pull the spoiled food out himself. And when I came in just in the nick of time telling him to stop what he's doing he growled at me like I was the one in the wrong. What was I supposed to do, allow him to harm someone and potentially cause us a hefty malpractice lawsuit? And the nurses around here just seem to turn a blind eye to his senile antics as if he's just fine. Or they just can't be bothered. The head Nurse Jackie says she doesn't get paid enough to intervene in the doctor's business. and the other nurses on my team seem to think it's just entertaining. We have nothing better to do than take care of this pack! I swear half the people here become nurses and doctors to simply be the help people need, And the other half is just after a large paycheck. Not caring about anyone other than themselves. That was just proving to be more and more obvious each day as the doctor's health deteriorates more and more. As I went on my 30minute lunch break stepping out to get lunch over at the java cafe, Picking up my pastrami on rye with a side of fries a peach Snapple, and a coffee to go. I paid at the register tipping my favorite barista Kevin 5 bucks then headed out the door making my way to the Greenland square where I sometimes liked to sit on the benches and watch the birds fly around gathering food and twigs for their nests. preparing for winter. I took 2 bites of my sandwich before finally deciding to call home and check up on those two siblings of mine. The phone rang 6 times before the answering machine picked it up. which is strange because Ezra and Ellie both should be home by now, and truth be told it was making me worried. especially cuz Ezra thinks I don't know he skipped class today but hey I was young once too, so I get it. But as long as he doesn't make this a habit it's cool. I wasn't going to trip about it. We all could use a few days off to process things. not like our lives weren't just turned upside down. Even still, I was going to worry about them regardless, they're all I have left.
"I'm sure they are fine little wolf don't worry yourself so much" Mirna tried to reassure her.
Finishing up my lunch early I decided to head back in and do a little damage control trying my best to keep myself distracted from whatever those two siblings of mine were up to. Which kind of was hard to do especially since it's now my job as their guardian to continuously look after them. Tossing my trash in a nearby trash can before exiting the park, marching up to the clinic doors.
"You are such a control freak, you just want to check up on Dr. Bob" Mirna teased.
She was right. But if I don't then who will?!.
I got to the clinic doors walking through and passed the main check-in desk where nurse Jackie sat filing her pink press-on nails ignoring her daily clinic duties as usual. "It's so hard to find good help these days," I said while shooting her a dirty look. She scuffed rolling her eyes, jumping up grabbing her chart, and proceeded to follow me in.
"You have 3 new patients waiting in the lobby and 1 in room 2" she informed.
I checked over the patient's chart while Heading over to room 2, It says she is 4 years old suffering from chest pains and trouble breathing. I opened the door greeting my patient as I stepped into the room. She was clearly in a lot of pain and clenching her chest as Dr. Bob looked her over. He had a stethoscope up to her chest and had already had nurse Cleo administer her some morphine for her pain 10 minutes ago but it didn't seem to be kicking in yet. Dr. Bob insisted she needed to be taken to surgery right away, The young girl looked up at me with fear-filled eyes. Reaching out her hand to me as she grabbed onto my arm pulling me close to her. she said " No! No surgery, Please!". Tears filling her eyes. Dr. Bob scuffed at her cries Losing his patients with the small child. She looked over to me expecting me to intervene with the saddest little face. I tried pleading with him if maybe surgery was a bit too rash being that neither of us knew what was wrong with her as of yet. Dr. Bob looked me square in the eye seething at the mouth and said "Well if you think your so smart then you deal with the little brat" Then stormed right out of the exam room slamming the door behind him. Leaving me alone with the tiny patient. "Are you okay?" I asked her. She nodded her head "Yes" in reply. I was a little nervous being that this was my first case alone. Looking over the chart once more I scanned through it noticing her name was never filled out. And there was no parent's info or even a signature at the bottom.
"Where are your parents?" I asked her.
Although she didn't respond, She just kept staring at her feet looking as nervous as I am.
"They have to finish filling out the consent form for you" I continued.
Flipping through the chart again I noticed the front page was all that was filled and the remaining 3 pages were left blank. Looking back up at her still staring at her feet biting down on her bottom lip. I began asking again "Are your parents out in the lobby?". She turned her head towards me with a sad look in her eyes and Quietly said "No".
"So where are they?" I asked her.
She sniffled turning to look away before her response. "Don't gots any" She said in a whisper.
"So who brought you here?" I asked.
"Myself" she replied as a tear escaped her eye. Turning to wipe it away.
I wasn't sure what to do after that. And I had never had a case like this yet alone a case all on my own. But I was determined to help her in any way that I can. After all, I am a doctor. Just low status but still I'm qualified. Graduation was only in a month. And it seems I'm all this child has right now. So I took a deep breath and began again.
"Let's start over... I'm Dr. petters. What's your name?"
The child looked up hesitantly before I heard her response.
"My name is Gabby," She said in a low voice.
"Okay gabby what's going on with your chest today?" I asked her with a friendly smile. Trying my best to make her comfortable with me.
She looked like she was exhausted and her clothes were covered in dirt and had holes in her yellow sweater and her grey leggings weren't in any better shape. She had on black converses that were practically falling apart. And if I spoke to them they'd probably speak back with the gaps between the shoe and the soles of it.
"My chest hurts" gabby Said clenching onto her yellow sweater.
"Oh no... Alright gabby. well, Let me take a look" I replied. Grabbing up my stethoscope from the metal tray behind me I turned to her proceeding to ask her to lift her sweater so I could get a closer look. When she started lifting her sweater I could hear her wince at the pain. She rolled her sweater up revealing a bruised rib cage nearly black and blue all over her torso and stomach. I could feel the anger inside me rising to the surface and my face couldn't have been so pleasant judging by how fast she pulled her sweater back down.
"Oh my god, that poor child" Mirna exclaimed.
"Who did this to you?" I asked her with more concern and anger lacing my voice than I probably should have.
"Umm..nobody," She said as she turned away trying not to look me in the eye.
"Gabby how did that happen to you?" I pried once more.
"I fell" she quickly spat out. almost sounds like she wanted to believe that more than she wanted me to.
"She is lying queenie, She's scared. We have to help her!"
"Keep it together Mirna I can't keep calm if you are projecting your emotions on me too! hard enough with my anger! But we have a job to do!"
" But queenie! She needs help just look at her!" Mirna argued.
"Hey, gabby.." I tried speaking to her again.
"Yeah," Gabby replied.
"Do you mind showing me where you got hurt again?" I asked cautiously.
"Okay," she said as she pulled up her sweater once more.
I examined the bruising more carefully and it wouldn't take a genius to determine that only an adult boot or a hard large shoe could have made the large boot prints on her tiny little body. She had a few cracked ribs and her skin was raw and tender to the touch. I could also see some wounds that seemed to be healed scars under the new bruising. her back had lashes like shed been beaten by a whip or something shaped like it. I couldn't believe my eyes.
"Where do you live? ..gabby?" I asked her as she pulled her sweater down over her scars.
She looked down to her feet unwilling to answer me.
"Okay...that's fine gabby.. well if you won't tell me that. Then What happened to your parents?"
"They died" she answered.
"Died how?" I asked abruptly without even thinking.
She began to cry. But this time it wasn't Dr. Bob who hurt her feelings but it was me and my big mouth. What an i***t.
"She has no parents queen, and whoever is taking care of her isn't doing a great job at all. I vote we take her home" Mirna said letting her emotions get the best of her.
"We can't just take her. that's kidnapping!"
"How! when she has no parents! She's all alone!"
"And you are not to be trusted at a park, You predator!" Queen spat back.
"Haha! Now if you finished with your jokes maybe you'll notice the child in front of you crying out for help"
"I see her Mirna! But what the hell do you want me to do! She won't even tell me who did it"
"Because she doesn't trust you yet. . . But she wants to"
Mirna was right but I couldn't just take her home not knowing who she is or if she even has anyone looking after her. I mean she could be lying. And I'm a doctor for goddess sake! I TOOK AN OATH!"
"AND THIS IS WHY! She doesn't trust You!!!"
"What's that supposed to mean Mirna. She keeps lying to me. I'm only trying to help her!"
"Would you trust some stranger to help you! Think about it! How many people might have failed this child before she came across you! JUST A SECOND AGO SHE WAS DEALING WITH DR. BOB! DO YOU TRUST HIM!? I DOUBT YOU WOULD BE SO TRUSTING EITHER WALKING IN HER SHOES QUEEN"
Ughhh! She's right honestly I don't know what to think but I do know I have to do all I can for this child. I'm her only hope. I spent so long arguing back and forth distracted with my wolf that I hadn't even noticed gabby had passed out. Her breathing was shallow. I lifted her shirt and noticed her bruises were turning blue and purple. She must be bleeding internally. Her eyes rolled back in her head exposing the whites of her eyes.
"F#%k! what do I do! we're losing her Mirna!" I turned to the wall hitting the nurse button for assistance, No one arrived I had begun to panic forgetting all my constant training.
"STOP FREAKING OUT! You've got this queenie! Let me help you"
"Okay! but hurry we have to do something she is bleeding out!" I panicked.
"Queen place your hand over the wound! NOW!" She roared.
"What why?" I asked still panicking.
"JUST DO IT!" She said.
So I reached my hand over to gabby's chest lightly placing it over the now black and blue bruised rib cage. She began to convulse as her body jerked. White foam came flowing from her mouth.
"Oh crap!" I shouted.
Suddenly my hands grew hot over her chest as my hands started to glow spreading the warmth of the glowing yellow hue starting to emanate from the palms of my hands directly into her tiny little body. The bruising to her rib cage started to clear up instantly and her body stopped shaking as she laid still under my touch. Her skin returned to its normal color as she opened her eyes wide looking me dead in the eye. I had no idea what was going on but I wouldn't dare stop it. It was almost like my hands suddenly just knew what to do even if my brain did not.
"You can stop now queen" I heard Mirna say.
Pulling my hands back the glowing had stopped. And my patient seemed to be doing much, much better. I couldn't understand how. But it didn't stop the relief that I felt inside. Now that the worst was finally over. She sat up, on the hospital bed she was just previously passed out on. Leaning back on her elbows.
"Are you alright gabby?" I asked with deep worry in my voice.
"Yeah. I feel great just a little tired" She replied.
"I'm gonna keep you here overnight, Do you need me to get you anything?" I asked her.
But she just shook her head no. Laying back down on the bed and closed her eyes. She looked exhausted. I walked over to the supply closet in the room pulling out a sizeable cotton sheet and covered her small frame before heading out of the room to check on the other patients. Closing the door behind me gently trying not to wake her.
