Big Crime in a Small town.
It started out like any other day. She woke up, drank her coffee, and got ready for the day at the morgue as the county coroner. She got into her car and drove to work, just an average day, until it happened. She hadn’t realized she was driving through the windy back road that lead into town, without paying attention- no body was ever traveling this early… she woke up forehead bleeding from where she had banged it on the steering wheel. Wrist in pain from her hand slamming on the dash, she assumed it was broken. She got out of the car, to see that she had drove into a tree, she barely remembered swerving to avoid hitting what was in the road, she turned around with a unseemly feeling in her gut.
On the ground laying behind her car was the body of a girl, couldn’t of been more than 20 years old. She immediately fell to the ground in a panic, thinking, “No way, I just ran over someone.” She immediately dialed 911.
“Hello, 911 dispatch, where is your emergency?” Rambled off the dispatcher.
“Hey, this is Danny, with the corners office. We’re just past mile marker 3 on route 289.” She stated trying to be exact, but she may have been wrong, as she was massively dazed out at that point.
“Howdy ma’am, can I ask, what is the nature of your emergency?” Dispatch inquired.
“Well, I believe I ran a girl over and I hit a tree. I think my wrist is broken and I have a gash in my forehead. I don’t know if she’s alive.” She tried to recall the event in her mind still in utter disbelief.
The silence from the other end of the line was deafening. Finally the operator responded, “Danny, I have two patrol cars and an ambulance on the way to you. I need you to check on the girl, is she breathing? Does she have a pulse?”
Danny was stunned that she was going to have check the girl still in shock she got up and ventured over to her. Danny placed her phone on the ground after turning it on speaker. She placed her uninjured hand under the girl’s nose, no breath. She placed her hand under the girl’s jawline. She immediately realized that the girl’s body was extremely cold, not out in the elements cold, it was morgue cold. She finally spoke to dispatch, “she isn’t breathing, she doesn’t have a pulse, and her body is extremely cold.”
Dispatch returned with, “Do you want us to contact your assistant, he’s the one who will have to handle this situation due to your involvement.”
Danny acknowledged that she wouldn’t be able to handle this case, “Yes, Dillon will have to work on this.”
Dispatch replied, “He is en route. Please stay on the line till patrol arrives, they’re less that three minutes out.”
Danny’s thoughts begin to run wild at the thought of her ex fiancé being the one to handle this case, but everyone knows you shouldn’t fall in love with your coworkers. Dillon wasn’t even her assistant for very long, she had literally just gotten the promotion to county corner two months prior. Dillon couldn’t handle the fact that she beat him out for the job, so he separated from her two weeks after she got the promotion. Needless to say things were definitely awkward, at first, but they had finally fallen into a civil relationship and now this.
Danny does as she is told, the shock is starting to wear down and she begins to feel the pain in her forehead and in wrist. She is mentally racing, the only thing she can do is visually assess this poor girl to determine if she caused her untimely passing. She immediately noticed that this girl has been injured by more than just the front of her Subaru. She’s got mats in her hair, her clothes are in shreds leaving a majority of her body exposed. She has old yellowing bruising along the entire left side of her face and what Danny can see of her stomach. She sees ligature marks on her wrists and ankles and she’s missing multiple finger nails. “Who did all this to you, poor girl?” Danny asks the corpse expectantly. She then notices the tire marks from her car and a sliver of her fender sticking out of the girls thigh, more interestingly, there’s no blood coming from that injury. She looks up and sees the blue and white of the sheriffs SUV.
