Chapter 1: Just another morning
Clara James woke up before her alarm rang.
She didn’t even need it anymore, her body had just gotten used to the routine.
She lay still for a moment, staring at the empty space in her room, her eyes unfocused and her mind was tangled in thoughts she couldn't escape.
After a few seconds, she sighed and got out of bed. There was no point still staying there. She went to freshen up and got dressed for work, then stepped out of her room, adjusting the sleeve of her cloth as she walked down the hallway. The house was already awake.
Soft movements, plates, and voices echoed faintly.
The usual.
Mrs. Agnes, the nanny was probably already up. She always was.
As she reached the stairs, Tessa Green, the maid hurried past with a tray in her hands.
“Good morning, Miss Clara,” Tessa said quickly.
“Morning, Tessa,” Clara replied gently.
By the time she got to the dining area, breakfast was already set.
Bridget, the cook moved between the kitchen and the table, placing the last dishes down neatly.
Daniel James, her dad, was already seated, looking through something on his tablet.
He looked up when Clara walked in.
“Morning, Clara.”
“Good morning, Dad.” She sat beside him.
For a moment, everything felt… normal. Simple.
Then Victoria, her step mother walked in.
Perfect posture, calm expression, everything in place.
“Clara,” she said lightly as she took her seat. “You’re going to the company today?”
“Yes.” Clara replied.
“Good. There are things that need attention.”
Clara nodded.
A few seconds later, Melissa, her step sister walked in, her phone still in her hand. She didn’t look up immediately, and when she finally did, her eyes met Clara’s for a brief second then she swept her gaze back to her phone.
Mrs. Agnes passed behind Clara quietly, adjusting a glass on the table.
For a brief moment, her hand rested lightly on Clara’s shoulder. A small gesture, but it meant something.
Clara didn’t react, but she noticed. Breakfast didn’t last long. No arguments, no real conversation either. Just quiet movements. One by one, they all stood up and left the table.
Daniel James left first, then Clara.
Victoria remained seated for a moment longer. Melissa didn’t move immediately either. The room was more quiet now, almost empty.
Victoria adjusted her sleeve proudly, and slowly, as if nothing had happened. Then Melissa glanced at her mother briefly. Just one look, that was all was needed. Victoria didn’t speak, neither did Melissa. But they understood each other through their eye contact. Something unspoken and well calculated.
Then Victoria stood up, and Melissa followed with a smirk on her face.
And just like that, they both left the dining room without saying a word.
But the silence they left behind didn’t feel normal. Not anymore.
Outside, the car was already waiting.
Stella Brooks leaned against it, scrolling through her phone.
When she saw Clara, she straightened with a
wide smile on her face. “There she is.”
Clara opened the door. “You say that every day.”
“And I mean it every day,” Stella replied with a small grin. Then they got into the car.
As it started moving, Stella glanced at her.
“How’s the house and everyone doing?"
Clara looked out the window.
“Normal,” she said casually.
Stella raised a brow slightly. “Your kind of normal?”
Clara gave a small nod. “…Yeah.”
There was a short silence, then Stella spoke again, softer this time.
“You know Mrs. Agnes was worried about you yesterday, right?”
Clara paused slightly. “She worries too much.”
“Or maybe..." Stella paused then continued, looking at Clara "you just don’t say enough.”
Clara didn’t argue. She knew it was pointless.
The city slowly came into view, pedestrians walking, cars and other vehicles moving, while Clara watched it quietly.
Everything looked like it was moving forward.
She just felt… slightly outside of it.
In the distance, the tall building of James Group came into view. Her father’s company, her responsibility, her reality, and just like that, the day began, just like every other day.
But somewhere behind her silence...
Something had already started and she didn't know it yet.
