Chapter ONE:
I opened my eyes, and slowly looked around the room. There was a small stream of light coming through the curtains and I could see the dust particles swirling about. I moved my head and the worst pain erupted inside my skull. It felt like my brain was banging around inside. I grabbed my head to try and lessen the pain. My vision went slightly blurry, and I had dark spots dancing around within it.
Man, what did I do? I tried to recall anything that I could have done, but I could not think straight. It is like the only thing I could remember is from when my eyes opened. What is going on?
I looked around the room to see if I could get a clue about what happened to my head from my surroundings. I am in a dimly lit room, lying on a small bed. If you can call this a bed; it is a small, thin cot that I am lying on. There are no sheets on the bed, just a small piece of cloth that I was using as a blanket. Next to the cot is a small nightstand with nothing on it. I opened the small drawer and found a gold chain with a single pendant on it. There was nothing else in the drawer. I picked up the chain and pendant and examine it. The pendant was a crescent moon and hanging down from the top, was a small light-colored gem. I bring it closer to my face, so I can look at it better, and the gem catches the sunlight. The gem lights up and sends a beautiful blue light around the room.
How beautiful! I was pulled out of my amazement by a sound coming from the door across the room. It sounds like someone is trying to open it. I quickly put the pendant back into the drawer, just as the door slowly creaks open. A young girl, maybe around the age of 16, walks in carrying a tray. She is dressed in a gray dress with a white sash around the middle. She wears black flats, and her hair hangs lifeless down her back. She does not look at me as she walks to a small table that I did not see before. The table is at the foot of my bed with a single chair next to it. She sets the tray down and goes to leave.
“Wait!” I said as I got up, the pounding of my head getting worse. “Can you tell me where I am? My head hurts terribly, and I cannot seem to remember anything to cause this.” The girl looks up briefly and says in a quiet, meek tone, “No.” She then quickly walks out the door and shuts it behind her. I hear some clanking sounds and then all is quiet. I walked to the door, intending to follow the young girl and get some answers. I grabbed the doorknob and turned it. Nothing happened. The door is locked. But why did she lock me in here? What is going on?
I banged on the door and yelled “Hey! HEY! Come back! Please! I do not know what is going on! Please!” At the end, I was panting and starting to panic. If I am in a locked room, does this mean I have been kidnapped?
I looked around the room to see if there was anything else I missed, but all I saw was the cot, the nightstand, the table with the single tray, and the window. THE WINDOW. I ran to the window and pushed the curtains to the side. I looked out the window, and I was horrified by the view. I am high off the ground and as I look out all I see are trees! Nothing else. I could barely see anything on the ground, but I saw a faint figure in a dark cloak walking towards the building. A cloak? Who the heck wears a cloak!? I ran back to the door and started banging, the pain in my head momentarily forgotten. If someone is coming into the building, maybe they will hear me and open the door. I cannot be kidnapped, so it must have been a mistake that the young girl locked me in here. I was about to bang on the door again when I heard the click of the door. I step back as the door swings open. In walks a tall man, dressed in a dark cloak. He looks me up and down and smirks. I look down, and I am dressed in a thin white dress with my feet bare. I am taken aback by his appearance and a feeling of uneasiness settles upon me.
“You're up sooner than I thought.” The mysterious man says, while still smirking. “Good, we can get started. Have a seat!” He states and points at the seat at the table.
I stood there and just stared at him. Something in the pit of my stomach tells me not to trust this man. He is looking at me like I am amusing. His eyes are dark and appear to be sunken into his head. He is tall, so his posture is slightly off while looking down at me.
“Ravyn, you will listen to me or face the consequences!” Ravyn? Who the hell is Ravyn? I tried not to show my confusion, but he must read my facial expression. “Ah, my potion worked then. SIT DOWN NOW!” He says in a booming voice. My knees quivered, and I quickly walked over to the chair. Potion? Did I hear him right? Is this why my head hurts? Did he poison me? Is this the cause of my memory loss? I tried to think of my name, but nothing is there. My mind is just a blank mess. As I try to think harder, my head starts to hurt more.
“Good girl” he says as I take a seat. “Now, eat. It will help with your head.” Can he read my mind? I looked at the table and on the tray the girl brought in, there was a plate with some mushy looking heap of food in the center and a single slice of bread. I pull the tray closer to me and pick up the fork that is beside the plate on the tray. I poked the mushy stuff with my fork and my stomach flips. What if he poisoned this? What if he wants to kill me? I do not know who he is, and I am NOT going to eat anything that he tells me to eat!
“If I wanted to kill you, I could have easily done so! However, if you do not wish to eat then I will have it removed. I am not one for charity and so you can starve for now.” He snaps his fingers and in walks the same girl that brought the tray in. She quickly walks over to the tray and picks it up. She briefly looks at me, when her back is too him, and I can see that she is terrified. Her eyes are pleading with me. But because of what I do not understand.
“Now, what do you remember?” He states as the young girl closes the door behind her. What do I remember? I cannot remember anything before I woke up this morning. “SPEAK!” he yells at me.
“I-I-I don’t know” is all I say. My voice is raspy and dry. How long was I asleep for? “What happened?” He chuckled at me.
“Oh, poor Ravyn. You cannot remember anything? Good! My plan will work then! My people will be happy to know that everything is set. Now, all I need is the pendant!” He says with a smirk. The pendant? Not my pendant. I look at the nightstand briefly, but he catches my eyes.
“Are you thinking of escaping through the window? Ha! By all means try. Not even you have the kind of power to survive that fall.” The window? He misunderstood my gaze and thinks I was looking out the window. Something in me feels relieved. I am not sure why, but I feel like I should hide the pendant better.
“Please s-s-sir, where am I?” I stuttered due to the dryness of my throat. I tried to swallow some spit to help. “Oh, so mannerly. They taught you well! Well, since you asked so nicely, you are being held captive within the borders of the Black Water coven.” He says with a smirk.
“Black Water Coven? I am sorry, I do not know what that means.” I said. What is this psycho going on about? A Coven?
“Ha! I am too good of a sorcerer. I’ll have to adjust my potion. The Black Water Coven is the most powerful coven of Warlocks in the region. I am their leader! You, my dear, are the key to obtaining more power!” His eyes get darker, and the room begins to grow colder. A warlock, like a witch? Witches cannot be true? Could they?
He laughs “You will be held here until I obtain all the necessary things that I will need to complete the ritual. You will then either be my slave or be disposed of.” He says, and then sweeps his cloak as he pulls the door open. He stands in the doorway, looks back at me, and says “Sleep!” He waves his hand in the air and the room grows darker. I felt my body go heavy, I fell to the ground, and let the darkness take me.
