Elena Hart never believed in monsters until a car accident and an emergency blood transfusion tied her to one. Damon Voss is the most feared Alpha in the territory, a man who has spent years hunting whoever destroyed his family, unaware that the blood now running through Elena's veins carries the very answers he has been searching for. A blood bond is not like an ordinary mate mark. It cannot be broken. It cannot be rejected. And once werewolf society learns it exists between a human and an Alpha, both Elena and Damon become targets for enemies who would kill to control what their bond actually means. As secrets from Damon's past collide with a danger Elena never asked to inherit, they must decide whether the bond that ties them together is a curse neither of them can escape, or the one thing powerful enough to save them both.

The Blood That Should Not Have Saved Her
Bound by Blood and Moonlight Chapter 1: Elena Hart did not remember the crash itself, only the sound that came before it, a horn screaming somewhere too close and too late, and then nothing but white light and the strange, distant feeling of her own body being pulled apart from her mind. She woke up in a hospital room three days later, machines humming quietly around her, a nurse adjusting an IV line with the practiced calm of someone who had seen far worse than a car accident survivor. Elena's throat felt raw. Her whole body ached in ways she did not yet have language for, and when she finally found her voice, the first word she managed was a question that would, in time, become the center of everything her life turned into. "What happened to me." The nurse's expression flickered, something careful and slightly evasive passing behind her eyes before professional composure smoothed it away. "You lost a great deal of blood," she said. "You are lucky. We found a donor match faster than anyone expected." Elena did not think much of it then. She was twenty three years old, recovering from a crash that had nearly killed her, and gratitude for survival left little room for questions about the mechanics of it. It was not until three weeks later, home and healing, that the first sign something had changed inside her made itself known. She woke at midnight to the sound of a wolf howling somewhere far outside the city, and felt, impossibly, a pull low in her chest that had no reasonable explanation at all. Miles away, in a compound tucked into forest most of the city pretended did not exist, Damon Voss felt it too. He had been Alpha of the Voss pack for six years, ever since his father's death left the position to him earlier than anyone had planned, and in those six years he had built a reputation as a man who did not startle, did not flinch, and did not allow sentiment to interfere with the slow, patient work of hunting whoever had orchestrated his family's downfall. So when the pull hit him mid stride, sharp and disorienting, dropping him to one knee in the middle of his own training yard, every wolf nearby went utterly still. "Alpha." Sable, his second in command, was at his side instantly, alarm sharpening her voice. "What is it." "I do not know," Damon said, which was, for a man who prided himself on knowing everything relevant to his pack's survival, an admission that unsettled him more than the sensation itself. He pressed a hand to his chest, feeling something new and unfamiliar settle there, a thread pulled taut between himself and someone he had never met, somewhere out in a city he rarely bothered visiting. "Something has changed. Something that should not be possible." "A bond," Sable said slowly, watching him with dawning understanding. "You are describing a bond forming, Alpha. But bonds only form through a bite, and you have not bitten anyone in six years." "I know," Damon said. "Which means whatever this is, it did not happen the way bonds are supposed to happen." He spent the following days pulling every scrap of knowledge his pack's old texts contained on the subject, most of it fragmentary, contradictory, or dismissed outright as superstition too old to be taken seriously. What little he found agreed on one point only. A blood bond, unlike the common bite bond, required a direct transfer of blood between wolf and human, something so rare that most modern packs assumed the phenomenon was myth rather than possibility. Damon had not bitten anyone. He had, however, donated blood eleven days ago, quietly and anonymously, to a city hospital blood drive he attended twice a year out of an old promise made to his mother before her death. The realization landed with the force of a physical blow. Somewhere in that city, a stranger was walking around with his blood in her veins, and a bond neither of them had asked for or understood had formed between them regardless. "Find her," Damon said, and the two words carried a weight that made every wolf in the room understand immediately how seriously their Alpha intended to be obeyed. It took four days for his trackers to identify her. Elena Hart, twenty three years old, graphic designer, no known connection to the supernatural world at all, admitted to the hospital following a car accident on the same night Damon's donated blood would have entered the emergency transfusion supply. An ordinary woman, entirely unaware that fate, or blood, or something far older than either, had just tied her irreversibly to the most feared Alpha in the territory. Damon stood at the edge of his compound that evening, staring out toward the distant lights of the city where she lived her small, unknowing life, and felt the pull in his chest sharpen with a hunger that unsettled him more than any enemy ever had. He had spent six years building walls precise enough that nothing could get through them. A blood bond, apparently, did not care about walls at all. Somewhere across that same city, Elena stood at her own window, staring out at a moon she had never once felt anything toward before tonight, and wondered, with a creeping unease she could not explain, why some part of her suddenly felt like it was waiting for something. Or someone. End of Chapter 1
