Chapter 01
It was a quiet evening in what used to be a lively little neighborhood, the kind filled with the sound of children playing and neighbors chatting. But tonight, things took a dark turn. Hannah Ye stood on her balcony on the ninth floor, gazing down at the chaos below. Zombies, dressed in everything from pajamas to business suits, were attacking the residents of Happiness Community, and it was clear that a zombie apocalypse had begun. Hannah remembered everything vividly. May 5, 2024, marked the day when the world changed forever. A terrifying virus spread so quickly that it infected over 80% of the population within a week. People were first unaware of how it spread; later, scientists discovered it leaked through the water supply. But even that revelation came too late. The outbreak triggered a series of catastrophic events, including tsunamis, global freezing, toxic fogs, and monstrous creatures emerging from the ground. It was a calamity that transformed society as they knew it. Unfortunately, the consequences hit closer to home for Hannah. She once commanded a group of elite mercenaries, but in her last battle, she was crushed by a colossal beast. Now, here she was, back at the beginning—the calm before the storm. But instead of feeling relieved, she felt utterly frustrated. “What’s the point of being reborn in this mess?” she muttered to herself. “We're all going to die anyway. Shouldn’t I at least get some kind of warning or heads-up?” She sighed, recognizing the futility of her situation. There wasn’t any point in lamenting the world as she knew it was about to collapse again. But as she watched the zombies closing in, a sudden, strange voice broke through her thoughts. “Ding! Congratulations on the successful rebirth of the host. System activation complete!” Hannah’s heart raced. A system? She had read countless stories and knew that when people were sent back in time or into another life, they usually came with some sort of ability or advantage. So she quickly gathered her thoughts and asked, “What do you have for me?” “Host are currently facing danger. Initiating first check-in. Please make a choice: Option 1: A ton of food and water. Option 2: A loyal and battle-ready apocalypse survival legion.” Hannah blinked, taken aback. Was it really a multiple-choice system? She felt the wheels turning in her mind. She had read enough about apocalypse scenarios to know how crucial survival was. Both options were tempting, but with zombies outside, she knew the importance of allies over mere supplies. The mechanical voice was persistent. “Sorry. Only one option allowed.” “Great,” she grumbled under her breath. Food is essential for survival, but what good would it do without anyone to protect it? This was no underground bunker; it was just an ordinary apartment complex. Besides, she knew that in this new world, the worst threats often came from other people, not the undead. If she could rally a loyal, armed faction by her side, she'd stand a chance. “I choose the loyal and battle-ready apocalypse legion,” Hannah said, determined. “Ding! Choice confirmed.... Rewarding host with: Supreme Leader Module +” Before she could even process this, a strange device appeared in her hands, resembling a small, compact digital screen. With a mix of curiosity and excitement, Hannah examined it. “Activate on mechanical entities to form an elite mechanical lifeform legion!” it read. One recruitment a day, resetting at midnight. She grinned—this might be exactly what she needed. “Laser Bird, deploy!” she commanded, and to her amazement, a sleek robotic bird emerged from the device. It had sharp features and a mischievous glint in its mechanical eyes. “Clear out the zombies outside,” she ordered. “Affirmative, my master~” it chirped back in a surprisingly cheerful tone. As soon as the bird soared out of the window, a heads-up display appeared in front of her, giving her a live feed on the bird’s surroundings. She watched as it swooped past the seventh-floor windows, spotting a zombie in overalls that was clawing at the air. The Laser Bird unfolded a small Gatling gun and unleashed a hail of bullets that quickly took out the zombie. Impressed, Hannah felt both relief and excitement. This wasn’t just fancy technology; it was an effective means of defense. “What if I could summon an entire army?” the thought raced through her head. While she was aware the apocalypse was still looming, the possibilities of her new reality gave her a sense of hope. Sure, the world was chaotic, but now she had a fighting chance. Hannah Ye knew it was unfortunate that she could only activate one module each day, but she didn’t feel rushed. With the leader module already in her possession, she realized that mere survival was just the first step. Soon enough, she would command a frightening army, and then, dealing with zombies would be the least of her problems. She wouldn’t have to worry about wild creatures or prehistoric monsters either. Right now, survival was her main goal. She recalled something important: in three days, a massive zombie outbreak was expected in her area. The whole neighborhood would be engulfed, so her priority was clear—she needed to leave, find a secure spot, and start gathering supplies for her base. But she knew she had to be careful; leaving without a plan could be deadly. Despite having the laser bird to help her, Hannah was unarmed, and stepping outside could easily lead to her end. So, she directed the laser bird to scout the area and to head to the local JC station for a gun. In a situation like this, you absolutely needed three things: food, a safe place to stay, and weapons—and, of course, trustworthy allies. When the laser bird reached the JC station, it found it overrun. Police cars littered the entrance, and zombified officers were shambling around, victims of the tainted tap water. But Hannah wasn’t interested in them; her aim was the weapons inside. With a quick buzz and a flash, the laser bird used its precision laser to crack open a reinforced weapons locker. Inside were two HK-P7 pistols. While they might be a bit outdated, they were still usable, and better than nothing. The bird also managed to grab a box of ammo before zooming back to Hannah’s apartment. The bird landed with a clang, dropping the guns on the table and proudly announcing, “Master, I retrieved the weapons.” “Good job,” Hannah replied, feeling a wave of relief. The bird wasn't a combat unit, but it was surprisingly versatile. She quickly loaded the pistols and checked the magazines, making sure they were ready to go. Before the world went to chaos, she had trained for over two years; she knew how to handle tanks and most firearms, and her aim was solid. In this new world, wasting bullets was a surefire way to get yourself killed. Aim for the head, every time. Now, with some weapons in her hands, she could breathe a little easier, but she wasn’t done yet. “Laser bird, go find food and water.” “Yes, my respected master!” came the chirpy response, and it zipped out the window. While the bird was away, Hannah took the time to brace the door with heavy furniture, just in case. But then she heard a knock. Instinctively, she raised her pistol and peered through the peephole. Her brow raised in surprise—it was Liu Xiao, her neighbor from upstairs. He was tall and athletic, with striking features, and at the moment, he was dressed only in pajama bottoms and a loose hoodie that highlighted his toned physique. Hannah remembered him well. When she was starving and trapped, Liu Xiao took her in without a second thought. They had managed to survive three days together before they were separated during a chaotic military evacuation. Now, here he was, knocking with unease written across his handsome face. “Hannah? Are you in there? Please open the door… I—I don’t trust anyone else. The guy downstairs tried to lure me into his apartment, claiming he’d protect me. But with you… I know you.” Hannah hesitated for just a moment before opening the door, pulling him in quickly. He stumbled inside, releasing a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. “Thank God you answered. The streets are crawling with them. I thought I was done for.” But before he could continue, Hannah leveled her gun at him. Liu Xiao froze, his eyes wide. “W-What are you doing?” “Take off your clothes,” she instructed coldly. Liu Xiao's face went pale with surprise. “Excuse me?!” “Strip. I need to check for any bites.” His cheeks turned scarlet as he stumbled over his words. “You could’ve just asked!” “This is the apocalypse. I'm not taking chances,” she replied firmly. Grumbling and clearly flustered, Liu Xiao complied and removed his hoodie, revealing a smooth chest, free from any signs of infection. Eventually, he stood there, arms crossed, half-naked, his expression a mix of annoyance and resignation. After making sure he was clear of any bites, Hannah lowered her gun. “You’re good.” “Gee, thanks,” he replied, sarcasm dripping from his voice as he put his clothes back on. Still cautious, Hannah didn’t drop her defenses completely. She tied Liu Xiao securely to a chair. He didn’t resist, perhaps understanding the need for her precautions or too tired to argue. Just then, the laser bird returned, dropping a box filled with supplies: bottled water, bread, snacks—even some spicy chips. Liu Xiao blinked at the sight. “That little thing is yours?” Hannah nodded, “Don’t worry. It won’t hurt us.” With Hannah, Liu Xiao, and the bird together, the room became a temporary refuge amid the chaos outside. The world outside was filled with chaos—explosions, gunfire, and buildings burning like beacons of the end times. As Leo sat quietly by the window, he turned to Hannah and asked softly, “Do you think we’ll survive this?” “We’ll survive,” she assured him calmly. “As long as we stay smart.” With the system, the bird, and now these guns, she felt a flicker of hope. She wasn’t scared—not yet. Leaning against the wall, Hannah let the laser bird keep watch while she managed a quick nap. Liu Xiao, bundled up in a blanket by the bird’s side, had already drifted off on the couch. The next morning, Hannah was jolted awake. A cheerful ding interrupted her thoughts. “Congratulations, host, you have survived Day 1. Day 2 check-in available. Would you like to check in now?” Without a moment’s hesitation, she confirmed. “Today’s options,” the system chimed in, “are a handgun with unlimited ammo or a potent anti-zombie infection gene serum.” Without thinking twice, Hannah chose the serum. While unlimited bullets sounded fantastic, being immune was far more valuable. In an instant, a small blue vial appeared before her. She took a sip, and it tasted sweet with a hint of sour. “System, how many doses do I get?” she asked. “Two,” it replied. That was perfect. After everything Leo had done for her before the apocalypse and seeing him come to her side now, it only felt right. Looking over at Liu Xiao, still peacefully asleep on the couch, she whispered softly, “Let’s survive this together.”
