She didn’t believe in love.

But she believed in time running out.

Evangeline never imagined herself as someone’s forever. Not when she’s always felt like she never quite fit, never quite belonged. And when she learns her chances of having a child are slipping away, she makes a choice—one bold, reckless night to claim something that would be hers alone.

No strings. No names. No regrets.

Johann van der Merwe has everything—power, control, a legacy waiting to be secured. But finding a woman worthy of carrying his name? Impossible. They’re all the same. Predictable. Forgettable.

Until one night changes everything.

She was different.

Real. Unforgettable.

And then she disappeared.

Years later, he’s still searching for the woman he never truly saw…

Unaware that she’s already given him the one thing he’s always wanted—

An heir.

Now fate is pulling them back together, whether they’re ready or not.

But secrets have a way of destroying everything…

And when the truth comes out, he’ll have to decide:

Does he want control—

or the family he never expected?

Chapter one
The doctor didn't look at her when she said this. That's how Evangeline knew it was bad news. She sat at the cold examination bed, the results paper in her hand. She held them tightly, like they'd tear if she breathed too loudly. The room felt too clean, too sterile to let anything real exist. “Your ovarian reserve is significantly low,” the doctor repeated, voice calm in that practiced way that made everything sound less devastating than it actually was. “If you want children, you shouldn’t wait.” Shouldn’t wait. Evangeline let out a quiet laugh, no trace of humor in it. Wait for what? Love? Marriage? A man who would choose her? She’d spent her entire life feeling slightly… off. Not broken. Not unworthy. Just never quite what people expected. Not soft enough. Not charming enough. Not the kind of girl men looked at twice. And now, apparently, not the kind of woman who had time. Even if she would get a man, she wouldn't be able to give him a child. "How much time do I have?" she asked, her voice steadier than her emotions. The doctor hesitated for a second. But Evangeline caught it. “A few years, maybe less. It’s difficult to predict exactly, but your chances will decrease over time.” A few years. Evangeline nodded slowly, like this was another peice of information she could neatly file away and deal with it later. But something in her chest cracked open. Because later wasn't an option. The city grew louder as she walked out the hospital. Cars rushed past. People moved quickly, purposefully, like they all had somewhere to be, someone waiting for them. The sun was setting, casting everything in gold, but it didn’t feel warm. It felt distant. Evangeline stood on the pavement for a long moment, her bag hanging loosely from her shoulder, the doctor’s words echoing in her mind. If you want children, you shouldn’t wait. She didn’t need a fairytale. She didn’t need a wedding. She didn’t even need love. But she wanted something that was hers. Something real. Something no one could take away. Her hand moved unconsciously to her stomach, fingers pressing lightly as if she could already feel something there. A future. A possibility. A choice. And for the first time in a long time, Evangeline felt something sharp and certain settle inside her. Not fear. Not doubt. Decision. The party was too loud. That was the first thing Johann noticed. The music pounded through the walls of the penthouse, laughter spilling into every corner like something artificial, something forced. Women in dresses too tight, smiles too practiced. Men with too much money and too little substance. He’d been to a hundred of these. He hated every single one. Johann van der Merwe stood near the bar, untouched drink in his hand, his expression as unreadable as ever. People glanced at him—some curious, some calculating—but no one approached. They never did unless invited. And Johann never invited. Because they were all the same. Predictable. Boring. Forgettable. Until— “Do you ever look like you actually want to be here?” The voice wasn’t soft. It wasn’t flirtatious. If anything, it sounded… unimpressed. Johann turned. And for the first time that night, something shifted. She wasn’t like the others. No carefully crafted smile. No obvious attempt to impress him. Just a girl standing there like she had better things to do than be in a room full of people pretending to matter. Her eyes met his without hesitation. Direct. Steady. Real. Interesting. “That obvious?” he asked, his voice low. She shrugged, leaning casually against the bar. “You look like you’re calculating how fast you can leave without being rude.” A corner of his mouth lifted. Barely. “You’re not wrong.” “Then leave,” she said simply. Johann studied her for a moment, something unfamiliar settling in his chest. Most people tried to pull him closer. She was the first to push him away. “And you?” he asked. “Why are you here?” For a second—just a second—her expression flickered. Something deeper. Something guarded. Then it was gone. “Bad decision,” she said lightly. Johann didn’t believe her. But he didn’t push. Not yet. Because suddenly… leaving didn’t seem as appealing anymore. That night wasn’t supposed to matter. It wasn’t supposed to change anything. It was just a moment. A mistake. A choice made in the space between logic and emotion. No names. No promises. No tomorrow. But some nights don’t stay in the past. Some nights follow you. Change you. Haunt you. And sometimes… They give you everything you never knew you were looking for.
