Chapter 1 - Carol
Deeply conversing with herself about the possibility of dying alone, Carol walked on the side of the road like any other day. Her eyes wondered past the stream of people. They all walked beside each other but didn't have just a second to spare for one another. Carol's eyes met a few others, but not a single person actually acknowledged she was there. She sighed and looked up at the blue sky with white fluffy clouds slowly sliding by with their own pace. The only thing she knew would always be there. The sky. I would never disappear and even if it could, it would probably mean she would be gone too, along with every other existing thing. A small laugh snuck up on her and she let it leave her lips. The creativity and irony of the thought stream always surprised her, but by now she was pretty used to it. She has lived with it for 22 years and even so, she hadn't met other people who had such a weird approach to life.
Carol had no idea how long she had been standing there but she woke up to reality as a small raindrop landed on her forehead. Her mind told her to get out of there as fast as she could because a raindrop nearly never came alone. Her body, though didn't listen. Instead she stood there in the middle of the street while the rain began pouring down. Oddly refreshing, she thought to herself and the smile got a little bigger.
Everyone else started to run and Carol just waited for the moment when she would be run down. That moment never came. As if she had become a permanent part of the street. Like a light pole standing in all its ordinary glory. Soon after, she stood there almost all alone, which would have been unthinkable a few minutes back. Her legs finally started to move and about time, as the water had soaked all her clothes. The smile, however, didn't leave her lips as she was feeling like a happy puppy in the rain. Then the thought struck her again. Dying alone. In a town with so many people, Carol felt so ever alone. She didn't feel like hunting the streets for the one, but also wouldn't mind having someone to share life with. But then again, maybe it wouldn't be as bad as her brain portraits it. Many people have gone by just fine without a partner. Carol just couldn't shake the sad feeling the thought made her feel. Suddenly the sun decided to blind her shortly as the rain had stopped. It could now shine up without the limitations of the clouds, which had weirdly enough disappeared completely.
Carol blinked desperately as she tried to regain a bit of clearance but, of course, her legs hadn't stopped. She stopped abruptly as she walked directly into something. something soft and yet with the ability to hit back quite hard. With a heart that nearly stopped beating completely, an apology left her lips before she knew what she had wandered into. Luckily, she didn't feel completely stupid when it turned out to be an actual person and not a tree or something. But then again she just walked into someone so she couldn't help but to want to run and hide.
Carol was met with a grin and she smiled slightly awkwardly back. The man in front of her had broad shoulders and was a head taller than her. His dark brown looked almost black as it lied wet down his forehead. His light hazel eyes got a spark and he spoke with a deep voice.
- You alright?
- Yes thank you. What about you?
- Well it's not every day a beautiful woman runs into one, is it?
Carol withheld the urge to laugh, this felt very like a bad attempt at a pick-up line. Which definitely wasn't going to work.
- Almost sounds like you want to be run into
- Well you said it.
He laughed, which was highly contagious, and Carol couldn't help but to giggle. The smile on his lips complimented his already very attractive face.
They both jumped as a loud noise as the driver in the car beside them had pushed the horn. Carol had completely forgotten that she had been crossing the road when she bumped into the guy. Apparently so had he, and they shortly looked at each other before they continued on their way in a rush before the driver got out of the car.
Carol had reached the other side of the road when she stopped. She hadn't even asked for his name. Was she really going to look back at him? Her head answered for her as it turned and she immediately regretted it as their eyes met and the smile widened on her face. Quickly she turned and started walking away. She felt like a 12 year old. What had come over her? Carol's face felt warm despite being cold from the rain. Even though he was long gone and she probably wouldn't see him again, Carol still had a spiking feeling throughout her body and to top it off she was ashamed. She rarely felt ashamed, but this she couldn't shake off so easily for some reason. Shaking her head, she unlocked the door to her apartment and went in. As soon as she had locked it again behind her, she took off all the clothes. Luckily, she didn't have any roommates, so no one would see her. Carol went to the bathroom and caught herself in the mirror. Her long blond hair which was normally quite straight, had taken another route after the rain and was rather wavy and messy. The mascara had left behind its usual spot around the brown eyes and drawn black lines down her face as if she had cried.
Carol sighed deeply, couldn't she have been just slightly pretty the one time someone attractive noticed her? That was just her luck, wasn't it? Well, next time she felt beautiful she should just run into someone on purpose. Right, like that would ever work? When she thought about it, he had actually taken it quite well for someone to walk directly into him. A smile popped on her face again as she remembered the look on his face right after the incident. Supprised but also slightly worried. Who worries about a stranger? Well, obviously she does, Carol thought ironically and finally went into the shower. Hot water went down over her body and she felt slightly burned as she had gotten very cold. But it went away quickly as her skin got used to the heat.
