Chapter Four: Who You Burn First

1235 Words
Elena’s POV He hadn’t come to make a scene. He stared at us for a long moment. Then, turned on his heels and returned to the car. A sigh of relief parted my lips after he left. The trouble had been postponed to a later time. Moments after I had returned home, my mind was still reeling. I knew the exact moment Adrian discovered the truth. My head of security, Marcus, had informed me twelve hours earlier that one of Adrian’s operatives had swiped the half-empty juice box Noah left on a park bench. I could have stopped it. My men were in the trees, watching. But I told them to stand down. I wanted Adrian to find out. I wanted him to see the proof of what he had thrown away. I sat behind the glass desk in my penthouse office hours later as the clock ticked steadily toward midnight. The rest of the Evelyn Blackwood empire was asleep, but I was wide awake, waiting for the storm. It arrived at 12:14 AM. The double doors of my office were practically ripped off their hinges. Two of my armed security guards flanked him, reaching for their holsters, but I raised a single hand. "Leave us," I commanded. The guards hesitated, then backed out. Adrian Kingsley stood in the center of my office. His usually ironed suit was wrinkled, his tie discarded. His dark hair, always styled with ruthless precision, was a chaotic mess from him running his hands through it. But it was his eyes that stole the air from the room. They were wild, bloodshot, and warring with emotions I had never seen in him. He crossed the room in three long strides, slamming a crumpled envelope down on my glass desk with a force that rattled my coffee cup. A single sheet of paper slid out under the glow of my desk lamp. Probability of Paternity: 99.99%. I didn't blink. I slowly leaned back in my chair, and looked up at him with with a blank expression. "Congratulations," I said evenly. "It’s a boy." "Do not sit there and play God with me, Elena!" Adrian roared, his voice echoing violently off the windows. He slammed his hands down on the edge of the glass desk, leaning over it, his face inches from mine. "You hid my son from me. You let me mourn you. You let me spend five years, five years of hell, thinking the woman I loved was dead, while you were raising my child in secret!" His chest heaved. "I missed his first steps. I missed his first words. You stole my son from me!" Something deep inside me violently fractured. I didn't just stand up. I erupted. "Stole?" I hissed, my voice trembling with barely contained fury. I leaned in, mirroring his aggressive posture. "You have the audacity to come into my sanctuary and accuse me of stealing?" "You kept him a secret!" Adrian shouted. "I kept him alive!" I screamed back, the sound tearing from my throat with a c***k. Adrian froze, stunned by my outburst. "You think I hid him out of spite?" I demanded, stepping around the desk, closing the distance between us until I was pointing a trembling finger at his chest. "You think I chose to give birth on a filthy mattress in a foreign clinic with no anesthetics? You think I chose to be a ghost?" "You disappeared, Elena," Adrian said, his voice low and trembling. "You drained your accounts, you went crazy—" "I was pregnant!" I cut him off, my voice breaking on a sob I fiercely swallowed down. "I was carrying your child, Adrian! And the moment my father died, your family and mine moved in for the kill. They didn't just take my inheritance. They came for my mind." Adrian stared at me, his face draining of whatever color was left. "What are you talking about?" "Doctors, Adrian! High-priced psychiatrists paid under the table to suddenly declare the grieving heiress mentally unstable. Delusional. A danger to herself and others." I laughed bitterly. "They manipulated the court records. They bribed the witnesses. My accounts weren't drained by me; they were frozen by court order because I was deemed legally incompetent." I took a step closer, my eyes burning with unshed tears. "I was hunted. My own family was trying to have me locked in a psychiatric ward for the rest of my life to take the company. I had nothing. No money. No allies. No reputation." "I would have protected you," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking. "Why didn't you come to me?" "I did!" I screamed, the memory slicing open my chest. "I ran to your estate in the freezing rain! I stood at your gates, screaming your name, begging for help! And your security guards—the men you pay to protect your borders—threw me into the mud and told me Mr. Kingsley had no time for a deranged thief! I lived in a warehouse that was set on fire just to ensure I died!” Adrian recoiled as if I had physically shot him. He staggered back a step, one hand reaching out blindly to grip the edge of a leather sofa to keep himself upright. "No," he breathed, shaking his head. "No, Elena, no one told me. They told me you had a psychotic break. They told me you transferred the money and fled the country to avoid federal charges. I tore the city apart looking for you. I spent millions..." His voice trailed off as the reality of the manipulation finally set in. "Someone orchestrated my downfall, Adrian," I said, my tone steadying. "And they made sure you were looking the other way when they did it." The silence that followed was suffocating. Only the sound of Adrian’s uneven breathing filled the room. Then, the piercing ring of his cell phone shattered the quiet. Adrian flinched, and pulled the phone from his pocket with shaking hands. The caller ID flashed under the lights: Thomas Vance - Lead Investigator. Still staring at me in horror, Adrian accepted the call and pressed the speaker button. "Sir," Vance’s voice crackled through the phone, sounding breathless and urgent. "I’m sorry to call so late, but you told me to expedite the trace on those old psychiatric medical records Elena Hart's lawyers filed five years ago." "What did you find, Thomas?" Adrian asked, his voice scratchy. "Sir, the private clinic that issued the instability diagnosis... the doctors who signed off on her involuntary commitment orders..." Vance hesitated. "They were heavily bribed. The money was routed through a complex web of offshore accounts." "Whose accounts?" Adrian demanded, his tone suddenly cold. "I tracked the shell company that authorized the payments, sir," Vance said, his voice dropping to a low register. "It’s a subsidiary." "A subsidiary of Hart Enterprises?" "No, sir." Vance paused, the silence stretching over the line. "It’s a subsidiary of Kingsley Holdings. Someone in your own family paid to have Elena Hart destroyed." The call disconnected. The phone slipped from Adrian’s numb fingers, clattering loudly against the floor. He slowly lifted his head to look at me, looking utterly broken. I picked up the paternity results from the desk and held them out to him. "Now you know the truth," I whispered. "The only question left, Adrian, is who you're going to burn down first.”
