Chapter One : The Ghost Returns
Elena’s POV
The Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria was drowning in gold and hypocrisy.
From my vantage point on the mezzanine, I looked down at the glittering sea of the city’s most powerful elite. The air was thick with the scent of champagne, and the expensive perfumes of people who had never known a day of real starvation.
But my eyes were fixed on only one table in the center of the room.
The Hart family.
They were laughing, raising their crystal flutes in a toast. A picture-perfect portrait of generational wealth and untouchable grace. At the center of it all sat Vanessa, my younger half-sister, glowing in a custom white Dior gown that likely cost more than the average home. She looked angelic. Innocent.
A complete and utter fraud.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC's voice boomed over the state-of-the-art sound system, silencing the string quartet. "Tonight, we honor a woman who took the shattered pieces of a dynasty and forged them into steel. When Hart Enterprises faced its darkest hour—following the tragic and untimely loss of her troubled older sister—this young woman did not shatter. She led."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause. Flashbulbs exploded like a lightning storm, illuminating the ballroom brilliantly.
Down below, Vanessa stood. She pressed a hand to her chest, her eyes shimmering with fake tears. It was the performance of a lifetime. She bowed her head humbly, but from this angle, I caught the slight, smug curling of her lips. She loved it. She thrived on the ashes of my life.
Beside her, Victoria Hart, my stepmother, clapped with elegant restraint. Her eyes scanned the room, making sure everyone was paying proper homage to her daughter. They were so comfortable. So remarkably secure in their stolen kingdom.
They truly believed I had burned to death in that abandoned warehouse five years ago.
They believed the ghost of Elena Hart was buried under six feet of dirt and a mountain of their carefully constructed lies. Five years of hiding in the shadows. Five years of rebuilding myself from nothing but the charred clothes on my back and the fire in my veins. While I was fighting to survive the trauma they inflicted, learning to be a mother to a son they didn't know existed, Vanessa was drinking vintage champagne and wearing my father's legacy like a cheap accessory.
I took a deep breath, letting the air of the balcony fill my lungs. Then, I stepped back from the railing and walked to the top of the staircase. As I descended toward the main floor, the atmosphere in the room visibly shifted. It started as a ripple near the back doors. Heads began to turn. Conversations faltered.
When I reached the doors of the main ballroom, two security guards stepped back, and pulled the doors open wide.
I stepped into the light, wearing a custom, floor-length gown made of dark silk. A constellation of diamonds cascaded from my ears, but it was the piece across my face that held the room hostage. A diamond mask covered the upper half of my face, obscuring my eyes.
The entire ballroom fell dead silent. The flashbulbs that had been blinding Vanessa moments ago suddenly pivoted to me, desperate to capture the figure that had just crashed the most exclusive party of the year.
"Is that..." a woman nearby whispered.
"It's Evelyn Blackwood," a man murmured back, his tone laced with fear.
Evelyn Blackwood. The Ghost Investor. The mysterious billionaire who had materialized out of thin air and effortlessly acquired three rival corporate giants in a single week. No one knew where I came from. No one knew what I looked like beneath the mask. They only knew that my bank accounts held ten figures, and my intelligence network was unparalleled.
Up on the stage, Vanessa’s triumphant smile faltered. The spotlight was no longer on her. Her moment of crowning glory had been effortlessly hijacked.
I walked straight toward the VIP tables.
Vanessa, desperate to maintain her carefully cultivated image as the gracious queen of the city, quickly descended the stage steps. She pasted on her signature sweet smile and hurried to intercept me.
"Miss Blackwood!" Vanessa called out, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. She extended her hand, stepping directly into my path. "What an absolute honor to have you at our charity gala. I am Vanessa Hart. We are so thrilled to—"
I didn't even break my stride.
I let my eyes slide completely past her, turning my shoulder just a fraction of an inch to leave her hand hovering in the air. The collective gasp from the surrounding tables was intoxicating.
I walked directly to Marcus Sterling, the venture capitalist whose money kept Hart Enterprises afloat.
"Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice smooth. "I've been reviewing your latest portfolio. The acquisitions in the tech sector are... messy. We should speak about restructuring."
Marcus eagerly grasped my hand. "Miss Blackwood! I—yes, absolutely. Whenever you have the time, my office is open."
I moved down the line. Next was Jonathan Hayes, the banking magnate. Then Senator Rawlings. One by one, I shook hands, my smile strategically dismantled Vanessa’s entire network in under three minutes. Every single man and woman she had planned to charm tonight was suddenly desperate for my attention.
I could feel her suffocating. The golden child was losing control of her own coronation, and she didn't even know how to fight back.
Finally, when the silence from the Hart family table became too loud to ignore, I pivoted slowly.
Vanessa was standing exactly where I had left her, her arms rigid at her sides. The fake smile cracked when I turned.
As I took a deliberate step toward her, the crowd instinctively parted for me.
I looked her up and down, my gaze lingering on the glass Businesswoman of the Year award clutched in her trembling hands.
"Miss Hart," I said softly.
"Miss Blackwood," she managed to say, her voice tight, "I was beginning to think you didn't see me."
"Oh, I see you," I replied, my tone light. I leaned in just a fraction, invading her personal space. "I see exactly what you are. You’ve done a remarkable job building your empire from someone else’s sacrifices."
Vanessa froze, her breath hitched in her throat.
All the blood drained from her face, leaving her looking like a beautifully dressed corpse.
She knew exactly what it meant. Only one person in the world would phrase it like that. Only one person knew the truth about the forged medical documents, the stolen inheritance, and the blood soaking her hands.
I held her wide-eyed gaze for one second, then turned on my heel and walked away.
I didn't look back as I navigated through the stunned crowd and slipped out the side doors into the hallway reserved for VIP staff. The doors closed behind me, instantly cutting off the noise of the ballroom.
Ten seconds later, the doors burst open again, the clicking of stilettos echoing behind me.
"Wait!" Vanessa’s voice cracked down the long corridor. "Evelyn! Wait!"
I stopped, letting the silence stretch before turning to face her.
She stood ten feet away, looking completely unhinged.
"Who are you?" she demanded, her hands trembling violently. "Who the hell are you?"
I didn't say a word. I simply raised my right hand.
With deliberate slowness, I pinched the edge of my black velvet glove and pulled it down, exposing my inner forearm to the golden light of the crystal wall sconces.
There, running thick across my wrist, was an ugly scar.
The exact scar Elena Hart received thirteen years ago, when she threw her arm over her younger sister to protect her from a shattering glass vase.
Vanessa stared at the scar, her eyes wide as saucers. She took a staggering step backward upon recognizing the scar.
I took a step forward, a smile spreading across my lips.
"Miss Hart," I whispered. "Did you miss me?"
While she was still frozen in shock, I moved past her, returning back to the ballroom.
