Chapter Four

1006 Words
Liam’s eyes drooped, his shoulder slumping as he rubbed the stubble on his chin. He had been running on coffee fumes and stale air for hours, the fluorescent lights of the precinct humming overhead like a relentless drumbeat. A soft knock landed on his door, “Come in” , he said, clearing his throat. Lucas came in, grabbed a chair from the side of the wall and sat down. “The Chief wants to see you”, his voice firm, eyeing Liam. “Okay”. Liam’s chair scraped against the floor as he suddenly pushed himself to his feet. Lucas grabbed his hand, stopping him, “Not like this man, you look dead. At least wash up first” “Really?” Liam asked, grabbing a mirror from his desk, he had not even noticed a paper stuck on the side of his cheek. “Tell the Chief I’ll be there in a minute” “Will do” Lucas said, as his hands closed around the door handle, yanking it open and striding out into the hallway. The Chief’s voice was like a slow-moving storm cloud, heavy with resignation and finality. “Liam, we have exhausted every avenue, every lead, every shred of evidence. Langley’s case is going cold, and it is time to face the truth”. His words dropped like weights, each one sinking deeper into the silence that followed. He shook his head, his eyes weary and sympathetic. “We can’t keep resources tied up in a case that is going nowhere. It is time to close the file, officially. Liam’s face was a mask of disbelief, his eyes flashing with a mix of anger and frustration. He opened his mouth to protest, but the Chief’s raised hand cut him off. “I know, Liam. Langley had been evading the police for years now. He was corrupt and evil, maybe it was his shady dealings that caught up with him”. But Liam could care less about Langley. This case only reminded him of how he has still not been able to solve his sister’s murder. It had cold, just like this one. The Chief droned on, “Sometimes, we have to accept that justice isn’t always served. Sometimes, the only closure we get is the knowledge that we did everything we could”. The Chief’s words hung in the air like a challenge, a gauntlet thrown down, daring Liam to accept the harsh reality that the case was truly closed. “This may be the case for Langley,” Liam thought but he would definitely avenge his sister. He would not rest until her killers were brought to book. Liam nodded, resigning to the chief’s words. “I’ll take my leave, now sir” he said, his voice firm as he stood up and left the office, slamming the door shut behind him. “What did he say?” Lucas asked, his voice eager. Liam's voice was a low, simmering burn, his words spilling out like hot coals. "The Chief just shut down the Langley case, Lucas. Said we've got nothing, no leads, no evidence. Just another cold file collecting dust." He spat the words out like a bitter taste, his eyes flashing with a mix of anger and frustration. Lucas raised an eyebrow, his expression a mask of indifference. "So what? Langley was a corrupt businessman, Liam. He got what was coming to him." Liam's face twisted in a snarl, his fists clenched at his sides. "You don't get it, Lucas. This case... It reminded me of Rachel. My sister. Her case was never solved, never even closed. And now... now it's like history is repeating itself. Another unsolved murder, another family left with no answers." The air seemed to vibrate with Liam's pain and frustration, his words hanging like a challenge, daring Lucas to respond. Lucas's expression softened, his voice taking on a gentle tone. "Liam, I am sorry. I know how much Rachel’s case meant to you. But we can't keep chasing ghosts. Sometimes, we have to let go." Liam's laugh was a harsh, mocking sound. "Let go? You think I can just let go? You don't know what it's like, Lucas. To have the justice system fail you, to have the people who are supposed to protect you turn a blind eye. You don't know what it's like to be left with nothing but questions and pain." Lucas's expression turned somber, his eyes filled with a deep understanding. "I may not know what it's like, Liam, but I know you. And I know you won't give up. You'll keep fighting, keep searching for answers, no matter what." Liam's snort was a harsh, mocking sound. "You think I have a choice, Lucas? This case, Rachel’s case... they're a part of me now. I can't just walk away." Lucas nodded, his voice gentle. "I know. That's why I'm here for you, Liam. We'll keep searching, keep pushing, together." Liam's gaze snapped to Lucas, his eyes searching for any sign of doubt or hesitation. But Lucas's face was a mask of determination, his eyes burning with a fierce resolve. "Together?" Liam repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. Lucas nodded, his jaw set in a firm line. "Together, Liam. We'll find the truth, no matter what it takes." The air seemed to vibrate with the weight of their words, the promise of a partnership forged in the fire of determination and frustration. Liam's face twisted in a snarl, his fists clenched at his sides, but a small spark of hope flickered to life in his eyes. "Let's do it," he growled, his voice low and deadly. "Let's find the truth, and make them pay." Lucas's smile was a cold, calculated thing, his eyes glinting with a fierce light. "Oh, we will, Liam. We…” Lucas' phone buzzes. His voice trails off as he looks at his phone, his expression turning from determined to shocked and worried, leaving Liam wondering what he had just seen.
