Chapter Five

Kaida's hand closed around the cool metal handle of the elevator door, her fingers tightening as she pulled it open with a soft whoosh. She stepped inside, her eyes adjusting to the dim lighting after the bright fluorescent glow of the lobby. The doors slid shut behind her with a soft hiss, enveloping her in a cocoon of silence. As the elevator began its smooth ascent, Kaida's gaze drifted to the reflective surface of the doors, her eyes meeting the solemn face that stared back. Her expression was a mask of determination, her jaw set in a firm line, but her eyes betrayed a flicker of uncertainty. The elevator's soft hum filled the air, punctuated by the occasional ping of a floor indicator. Kaida's eyes never left her reflection, her mind racing with the unknowns that lay ahead. What would she find within the organization's walls? Would she uncover the truth, or would she become its next victim? The elevator's gentle stop and the soft opening of the doors broke the spell, revealing a sleek, modern corridor that stretched out like a challenge. Kaida's heart quickened as she stepped out into the unknown, the doors closing behind her with a soft thud, like a door closing on her past. Kaida's eyes narrowed as a figure emerged from the shadows, his features illuminated by the soft glow of the corridor lights. He was a stranger, yet familiar, with piercing brown eyes and chiseled features that seemed carved from granite. His dark hair was slicked back, revealing a sharp jawline and a small scar above his left eyebrow, shaped like a crescent moon. As he approached, his long strides devouring the distance, Kaida's instincts hummed with warning. There was something about him that radiated power and authority, a sense of entitlement that bordered on arrogance. "Caleb," he said, his deep voice low and smooth, like honey dripping from a spoon. "Augustus's son. And you are...?" Kaida's gaze never wavered, her eyes locked on his as she replied, "Kaida. A loyal member of the organization." Caleb's smile was a thin, calculated thing, his eyes glinting with a cold light. "Ah, yes. Kaida. I've heard a lot about you. You're quite... resourceful." The air seemed to vibrate with tension as Caleb's eyes raked over her, his gaze lingering on her weapons, her stance, her very presence. Kaida's hand instinctively went to the knife at her hip, her fingers drumming a staccato beat on the grip. "I see you're prepared for a fight," Caleb observed, his voice dripping with amusement. "How... quaint”. Caleb's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing as he took a step closer to Kaida. "You know, I've always wondered why my father favored you so much, Kaida. You, of all people. Not his own flesh and blood, but a...foundling." Kaida's face remained neutral, but a spark of anger flared within her. "I earned Augustus's respect, Caleb. I proved myself loyal and capable." Caleb's laugh was a cold, mocking sound. "Loyal? Capable? Please. You were his pet, Kaida. His little project. He thought he could mold you into something worthy, something that would make up for his own failures as a father." Kaida's hand tightened around the knife at her hip, her knuckles white with tension. "How dare you," she hissed, her voice low and deadly. Caleb's smile grew wider, his eyes glinting with malice. "Oh, I dare, Kaida. I dare because I know the truth. You were never one of us, never truly part of this organization. You were just a tool, a means to an end. And now that my father is gone, you're nothing but a relic of his weakness." The air seemed to crackle with tension as Kaida's anger boiled over, her eyes blazing with fury. "You have no idea what you're talking about, Caleb. Augustus saw something in me that you'll never have: potential. And he nurtured it, helped me grow into the person I am today." Caleb's expression turned scornful. "Potential? Ha! You were a charity case, Kaida. A pity project. And now you're just a reminder of my father's mistakes." Caleb's eyes seemed to glaze over, his mind slipping into the past as a memory resurfaced. "Lena, Marcus Black, Victor Vex, Sophia... they all warned me, Kaida. They told me you were ambitious, that you had a hand in father's... demise." Kaida's face went cold, her eyes flashing with denial. "That's a lie, Caleb. I would never—" Caleb's hand shot up, silencing her. "No, no, I remember now. They said you were positioning yourself to take over, that you had been manipulating father for years. And now that he's gone, you think you can just step in and lead the organization?" Kaida's voice was steady, but her eyes betrayed a flicker of fear. "Caleb, that's not true. I swear it on my life. I had nothing to do with Augustus's death. This is an elaborate plan of the rival faction”. Caleb's laughter was a harsh, mocking sound. "Your life? Ha! That's precisely what's at stake here, Kaida. Your life, and your freedom. You see, I've been thinking... and I believe it's time we had a little... chat with the others. See what they have to say about your... involvement." Kaida's eyes darted around the room, her mind racing with the implications. She knew she had to act fast, to convince Caleb of her innocence before he turned the entire organization against her. But as she opened her mouth to speak, Caleb's words cut her off. "Guards! Take Kaida into custody. We'll get to the bottom of this... treachery." Kaida's eyes widened as the guards moved to grab her, but she was too quick. With a swift kick, she sent one guard crashing into the other, and then she was sprinting down the corridor, her footsteps echoing off the walls. "Stop her!" Caleb yelled, but Kaida was already gone, vanishing into the labyrinthine corridors of the organization's headquarters. Just as Caleb was about to give chase, a calm, authoritative voice cut through the commotion. "Ah, Caleb, I think you'll want to see this." Kaida's heart raced as she peeked back around the corner, seeing the organization lawyer, Mr. Jenkins, standing in the doorway, a somber expression on his face. "What is it, Jenkins?" Caleb growled, his eyes still blazing with anger. "The will of Augustus, Caleb. It seems your father had some... specific instructions regarding Kaida's role in the organization." Caleb's eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?" Mr. Jenkins held up a document, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on Kaida, still hovering in the shadows. "Augustus gave sixty percent of his property shares to Kaida and you, Caleb, forty percent. As of right now, She is the acting leader of the organization. And until the board can convene to confirm her position, her arrest is... suspended." The room fell silent, the only sound Kaida's ragged breathing as she slowly emerged from her hiding place, her eyes locked on Caleb's furious face. "You can't be serious," Caleb spat, his face reddening. "She's a traitor, Jenkins!" Mr. Jenkins's expression remained calm. "The will is clear, Caleb. Kaida is the rightful leader of this organization until further notice."
