I can't believe what I let happen this morning. That was not like me, I had only known him for a week and here I am sharing myself with someone I hardly knew. Yet, I had this strange feeling in my gut that I have always known him without doing so.
I didn't want or ask for any of this. I was due to help at the pack hospital today and to my luck there are suppressants that help a female's heat so I can actually go work. Dean didn't seem to excited to tell me about them, but he did anyway.
After our morning rendezvous he had to get back to meet with his father and take care of pack business as well as get ready for the ceremony tonight. It was my first ever official pack ceremony, but I would only stand behind Dean as he took the Alpha title from his father. It made me nervous thinking about my own ceremony where I would take the title of Luna. The idea truly terrified me.
I slipped on a pair of scrubs that the hospital pack members had brought over for me, they were black which were may favorite color of scrubs. I slip my long wavy brunette hair into a ponytail before applying a hint of makeup. Honestly, being in heat I didn't need it. I looked like a ten today of all days, my breasts were three times there normal size I swear it and my butt had also grown slightly rounder. Maybe they were putting extra carbs in the food.
I slip on my favorite purple Nike tennis shoes before walking out the front door of my cottage. Dean had asked me to move into the mansion, but honestly I was happy out here. It was so peaceful and quiet, nobody really bothered me out here and I enjoyed that.
As I am walking down the winding trail towards the pack village a tall brunette sss with a short pixi haircut meets me at the fork of the trail, and greets me with a nod an a bow from her cold hard stare, "Hello Luna, Alpha asked for me to stay with you and assist you with your work day."
I blush at her professional demeanor, she acted as though she was going on a mission for the military. I mean, she really could be too, she looked very strong and was almost six feet tall with a beautiful caramel complexion and high cheekbones that stood out for the whole world to envy. I smile and place me hand gently on her bicep, making her head jerk up and eyes widen while looking back at her, "Please, you can call me Melanie, and what is your name?"
Her muscles relax and a smile perks onto her face, "I'm Riley, a warrior for our pack and daughter of Beta Lane, predecessor for Beta Emmett. "
A big smile quickly joins my face, "Oh my God! You're Emmett's sister?!"
She smiled back nodding, "Yes, his younger sister. I am only twenty-two."
I nod and become excited thinking about the possibility of new friends in this pack, "Well, we better hurry to the hospital, I don't want to be late on the first day!"
Her face goes back to the serious look from before, "Yes, let us proceed."
We continue down the trail in silence, Riley looked very serious and was looking around them constantly, always checking for a sign of attack. When they finally reached the village it was almost ten o'clock. I hurry to the large steel building that was easily as big as a foot ball field. I make it inside and I head to the second floor.
I notice the first floor is a large auditorium with multiple long tables and chairs, it could easily sit two hundred people. There was a cafeteria style kitchen in the south west corner where it looked like you could get your food and go sit wherever, although it was mostly empty.
When reaching the second floor I immediately feel at home. It looked almost like a hospital, but much nicer, it was like a real home with nice rooms for the patients. There were a total of five first class rooms, ten second class rooms, twenty-five third class rooms and then the third floor actually had even more rooms which weren't mentioned because they were they regular cubical clinic rooms, nothing special.
Although I realize these rooms were for the normal everyday pack members who couldn't afford the nicer rooms downstairs.
I met with the charge nurse who was a short woman in her early forties, she had blonde hair cut all the way up to her jawline and she was utterly gorgeous like all the other women of the pack she's met.
The lady gives her a big smile, "Oh Luna! You have no idea how excited I was to hear from Alpha that you wanted to help me! My name is Annie, if you need anything at all just please come and ask me!"
I return her smile and nod, "Of course, I hope to also one day be a nurse and learn as much as I can."
She nods, "Well you will certainly learn a lot here! Werewolves have a similar anatomy to humans, but the physiology is much different. Although I am sure you will learn fast, I am a good teacher as well!"
I can't help but smile at her enthusiasm, she truly looked thrilled to have me working there and I can see why, they are quite filled up on the third class and third floor especially. She points to the file cabinets and explains, "I'm am going to have you help me with some of my duties, kind of like an intern, okay?"
I eagerly nod and listen intently to her every word, "Okay, so all these file cabinets are labeled alphabetically and should have every name of every pack member here. Although when someone new enters we must make them a new file, like you for example, but we will wait to learn that it is easy. So you find the file of the patient using there last name and also by title, so Alpha and Beta will always be in the A and B drawers. No matter what.
"Then you enter the patients room and take their vitals, I don't want you to be alarmed when a wolf comes in with what you have learned to be high and abnormal vitals. I want you to be alarmed when they are normal, when they aren't skyrocketed and going crazy. That is when we must worry."
I laugh at what she is telling me, "So basically you're saying everything I learned is false."
She shakes her head aggressively and puts her hands up out in front of her, "Oh no, you learned everything correctly, it is just different when you tend to the wolf species. You see, they are an enormous species capable of producing cells at a much faster rate along with their metabolic process. They have to have a higher pulse and blood pressure because of the animal they are feeding their bodily nutrients to constantly."
I nod my head a think carefully over everything she is describing to me. It was so much different then what I had learned in school and at work, but I was strangely fascinated and intrigued to learn more.
"So where do I start?"
She smiles at her advance and nods towards the stairs, "Unfortunately, we do have to assist the third floor, but every pack member is important and thus the health of our pack is vital per Alpha's Law. It was created in our pack, but there have been cases of Alphas treating the lower titles poorly om other packs."
I follow her up the cement stairs to the third floor, when we enter through the stair well door I want to shudder at to cold gray feeling of the place. It felt like death, and if you weren't dying you wanted to die. The rooms weren't even rooms, they were just small closet sized cubicles separated by curtains. The rooms did not have a television. I did see an area where patients could check out books or magazines, but other than that it was just plain awful.
There were about ten patients who had been here for more than a month and there were another dozen who were here as of this week and another dozen from today. I was asked to go room to room and assess the patients for their afternoon assessments.
I started at the first patient that had been here the longest, his name was Samuel, he was twelve years old and he had leukemia. His wolf had yet to shift so he was fighting for his life hoping to make it to the age of sixteen when his wolf begins to descent.
She smiled, but tried not to smile too hard, she felt bad for the kid. He didn't look happy, he looked bored with his cold hard stare not even looking at her, just staring at the wall.
She coughs to clear her throat before continuing, "Hi Samuel, my name is Melanie. I will be assessing your vitals along with your mental and physical state, alright?"
He nods and finally turns his head looking at her, he rakes his eyes up and down her, not even changing his expression before saying, "You know how much it sucks to be here every single day, nobody the same age as you, eventually you've been here so long that all the books are no longer new to you anymore and the wall has a specific pattern of markings plastered into the frame. Although, not many people pay attention to these things huh?"
I stare at him as he speaks his feelings, he is so sad and hurt right now that she knows she must do something to make his life a little bit better, She pushes his shaggy blonde hair to the side as she presses the brain wave sensor to his forehead. This machine was something the had never seen or used before, but they had a bunch of them and they were pretty handy.
After taking the rest of his vitals that she found to be normal for his human body although slightly relaxed, she definitely noted his depressed mental state. He didn't utter another word throughout the entire visit and as she said good bye he didn't even direct his attention towards her, just kept staring at the wall in front of him.
I quickly finished the rest of my rounds, most of the patients were here on account of wound injuries given during battle. Wounds were always my favorite part, it was fun to clean and bandage the wounds daily while watching the progression of the healing process. It was very fulfilling to know that they were better because I helped their wounds heal.
Once five o clock came around I head back towards the first floor of the building where I had left Riley. She had wanted to help me work, but I quickly ended that thought. I never needed help back at my old facility, why would I need it now?
Her face light up when she sees me. I see her sitting with the lady from the kitchen, Pru. I return the smile before sitting down with the group. Pru looks up at me with curious eyes, "Hi Melanie, I don't think we've officially met. My name is Pru, I am Dean's Aunt and also Lieutenant for the East division warriors of the pack, but if you ever need something to eat I also take care of that as well."
I am shocked, does this woman really take care of all that she is stating? On top of cooking for the leaders she also manages an entire division of the pack army? I realize I hadn't said anything and was only gazing at her while deep on though, "I-I'm sorry, I just can't believe you do so much! I was actually going to ask you if you don't mind, I would love to help you in the kitchen whenever I can."
Her eyes widen at my statement, she looks surprised, but still curious, "Wow, you really do like to work don't you?" She smiled a bit before shaking her head, "If you would like I will be in the kitchen every morning at five AM. You are more than welcome to come in and assist me then. It is the busiest time of the day by far."
I nod my head enthusiastically, "I would love that!"
