Lucas suddenly lunged forward and wrapped his hand around my throat.
The pressure tightened. Air became harder and harder to draw into my lungs.
"Vivian, do you seriously think you're some beloved princess? Your father has nine sons. You're the only daughter. How much importance do you think a mafia family really places on you?"
He sneered openly. "Your brothers are ruthless men. Every single one of them. Why would they actually care whether you live or die?"
The contempt in his eyes wasn't even hidden.
When he finally released me, I collapsed against the pillows, coughing violently as I desperately sucked in air.
Anila set down the baseball bat and walked to Lucas's side. A vicious smile spread across her face.
"Why waste time talking to her?"
She picked up a bowl of dark soup.
"I heard that for someone as weak as you, a little poison might finally put you out of your misery. I went through a lot of trouble to get this."
Her smile widened. "You should thank me. I'm helping you find peace a little sooner. After you're gone, I'll gladly take over as the new lady of this house."
My eyes locked onto the bowl. A chill crawled up my spine.
"If you hurt me..." I struggled for every breath. "My brothers won't let you get away with it."
My voice was barely audible. Still, I forced myself to continue.
"Edric and Monica have treated me like their own daughter. I don't want them dragged into this. Lucas... if you stop now... I can still spare your life..."
Bang!
Before I could finish speaking, Lucas kicked me square in the chest.
The pain exploded through my body. I was thrown backward onto the bed. Blood surged from my mouth, soaking the sheets crimson.
"Vivian!" The servant screamed in horror and tried to crawl toward me.
Anila immediately stepped on her hand and ground her heel down mercilessly.
"Shut up."
Lucas looked down at me with utter disdain. "Vivian, you're pathetic. You really think your brothers would turn against my family because of a useless woman like you? Be a good girl and drink this. It'll hurt less."
Anila lifted the bowl and forced it against my lips.
I struggled desperately. It was useless. Neither my strength nor my failing body could resist the two of them.
The poison poured down my throat. The burning sensation spread instantly.
My vision began to blur. Pain tore through every part of me.
One by one, memories of my brothers flashed through my mind. My biggest regret was that I wouldn't get to see them one last time.
Just as the final mouthful of poison was about to be forced down my throat...
A deafening explosion shook the entire villa.
The reinforced security door at the entrance was blown clean off its hinges.
Nine tall figures strode into the master bedroom. The killing intent rolling off them was enough to freeze the blood in anyone's veins.
At the front stood George Moretti. His face was twisted with fury.
The moment he saw me pinned helplessly to the bed by Lucas, his eyes nearly split with rage.
"Vivian!"
John Moretti had already drawn his pistol. The weapon clicked as he chambered a round. Murder radiated from his gaze.
William Moretti's eyes were bloodshot. Veins bulged across his forehead.
He stared directly at Lucas. Then, through clenched teeth, he said, "Lucas... You're dead."
The smug smile on Lucas's face vanished instantly.
