As Ayla was about to open the door of her room, Professor MacPherson held her hand and dragged her to himself. He cuddled round her and said, “I have treasured and still treasure you, Ayla. I don’t treasure you because of your beauty; instead, I treasure you because of your smile. Recently, the smile has ceased and your beauty has been fading off. I would love to see you smile again; it makes you beautiful, you know.” “Dad, I can never smile until I see my mum,” Ayla said. She escaped from professor MacPherson’s arms and opened the door. She padlocked the door from behind and sauntered towards her bed. “Ayla, open this door for me!” professor MacPherson said as he knocked on the door. Ayla didn’t say a word, she was only sobbing and that was the only thing Professor MacPherson could hear. Professor MacPherson sauntered towards the sitting room, he clutched his briefcase and sauntered towards the pithead. He pulled the door and exited the room. When he got out of the house, he saw Evelyn coming in his direction. She was clutching a basket as usual. “Hold on, professor MacPherson!” Evelyn said as she walked towards professor MacPherson. “Alright…,” professor MacPherson said. When Evelyn was closer to where Professor MacPherson was standing, she stood beside him on the right and said, “Good morning, sir. Are you going to our house?” Evelyn said. “Good morning, Evelyn. Yeah, I am going to your house,” professor MacPherson said. “Mason and I had waited for you, but you didn’t show up; so, Mason asked me to come and check on you,” Evelyn said as she glimpsed at professor MacPherson’s face. “That's nice of Mason,” Professor MacPherson said. “Is that all you have to say? Professor MacPherson, what happened? You look sad,” Evelyn said. “I'm fine,” professor MacPherson said. “You are not; please, talk to me,” Evelyn said with a gaze. “Ayla delayed me,” professor MacPherson said. “Ayla? Why would Ayla delay you? What happened?” Evelyn said with curiosity. “She wants to see her mum,” professor MacPherson said and coughed. “Take care, sir; I guess you are not traumatized?” Evelyn said. “No, Evelyn,” professor MacPherson said. “Alright. I guess Ayla is inside?” Evelyn said. “Yes, she is inside; she had locked herself inside the room,” professor MacPherson said. “Really? What happened to this girl? I think I need to talk to her. Professor MacPherson, will you come inside and eat your food?” Evelyn said. “We are running late; I will eat something when I get to work,” professor MacPherson said. “Alright, if you insist,” Evelyn said. “I need to see Mason now,” professor MacPherson said. “Alright; see you two in the evening,” Evelyn said. “Okay,” professor MacPherson said. He sauntered towards his car, entered the car and controlled the steering wheel. The car moved away gently. Evelyn sauntered towards the pithead, she opened the door and walked into the sitting room. She dropped the basket on a table and sauntered towards Ayla's room. When Evelyn got to the door of Ayla’s room, she knocked on the door and said, “Ayla…, open this door! It’s me, Evelyn.” Ayla could recognize Evelyn’s voice, she used her palms to clean her face and walked towards the pithead. “Good morning, ma,” Ayla said as she opened the door. “Don’t greet me, Ayla. We need to talk,” Evelyn said. The twosome walked towards the bed and sat down. “You delayed your dad?” Evelyn said. “I didn’t; he delayed himself,” Ayla said. “What’s your problem, Ayla? Do you want to kill yourself before your mum comes back?” Evelyn said and gazed at Ayla’s face. “No, ma; I am only missing her and that’s all,” Ayla said with a quavering voice. “You want to start crying again? You don’t have to; you may hurt yourself. If I were you, I would be committed to praying to God, instead of crying or bawling,” Evelyn said. “I had prayed for her return,” Ayla said. “Then, exercise a little patience; your mum will come around. I know how it feels to lose one’s best part,” Evelyn said, and touched Ayla’s lower jaw. “I am happy that you know how I feel. Thank you so much for all you have done; we owe you a lot,” Ayla said. Evelyn smiled and said, “Charlotte is my good friend, so in her absence, I should be able to cater for her family.” “Notwithstanding, ma; you've done a lot. I pray mum comes around, so that she can show her appreciation,” Ayla said. “Mum will definitely come back to this house. Have you eaten anything?” Evelyn said. “No, I haven’t; besides, I have not brushed my teeth,” Ayla said. “So you've not brushed your teeth and you are here thinking? You need to put yourself together now,” Evelyn said. “Alright, I will,” Ayla said. “Good, I brought something for you to eat. Now, you will go and brush your teeth,” Evelyn said. “Aright, mum,” Ayla said. “Mum?” Evelyn said. “Yes, you deserve it,” Ayla said with a smile. “I can see you are smiling; thank you very much. Meet me in the sitting room,” Evelyn said, and stood up from the bed. “Alright, ma,” Ayla said. The twosome sauntered towards the pithead and exited the room.
