Splendid Oblivion

Violet As I sit staring out at the splendid view of the valley of trees pass me by I can’t seem to find the joy in the view. Truthfully, I can’t seem to find the joy in anything anymore. Not since the day she passed, my mother was not of the typical type she did not love in an obvious way, but she was my mom and I still don’t know how to exist in a world where she does not.  My life has been a flurry of change since I said goodbye to her. I moved in with my father, who I saw sporadically throughout my upbringing. My parents divorced when I was eight and my mother was granted full custody. I will say although I loved my mother dearly, I always had a stronger connection with my father, we just got along well together always laughing and having fun. I am hoped being around him more would help me cope but I can’t seem to find the joy. These past few months living with my father have been dull and dreary and not easy on either of us, so when he was offered a new position out of state in Maine he thought it would be just the change we needed. We are currently a few hours from our new home and my father is getting anxious as he wants to get there and unpack and get everything ready before he starts work Monday. As I continue to stare out of the passenger window I feel my eyes start to close and sleep finally claims me.  “Violet, sweetie wake up we are here” I hear my father say as he starts to remove the essentials from the car.  “Dad, which room is mine? I want to get everything ready before we get dinner?” I reply getting out of the car stretching before grabbing my own things from the car.  “Sure, follow me, the movers are already done putting the boxes in the rooms, so just come get me when your hungry.” He tells me leading me through the house pointing out the various rooms. His room is on the main floor along with the essentials of every house. He also informs me that the entire upstairs is mine including my bedroom, a second bedroom I can do what I please with and a lounge area. My interest peeks at the possibilities and when we finally arrive at my room I am ready to get to work. “Thanks Dad, I will let you know when I am hungry”  With that he leaves me to work on my room. I must say the room is gorgeous and spacious. The walls are a lovely shade of lavender and all of my furniture is set up in just the right place so I don’t have to work about moving it. I am pleased to notice that my dad upgraded me to a kings sized bed that will no doubt be heavenly to sleep on tonight. I also see that he added an enormous flatscreen television as well as a sofa set with matching recliner and the desk that belonged to my mother made it here without a scratch. I will have to be sure to thank him for the extras later. After taking in the room I make quick work of unpacking all the boxes and putting everything away. I was happy that the TV was working as the music channel playing in the background made the work go quicker.  Once I was satisfied with the progress of my bedroom I move to the bathroom. I am happy that has a shower and an enormous bath tub that could easily fit three people. I had missed taking baths at Dad old place since it did not have a tub. I set all of the toiletries out and suddenly I am hungry so I set out to find my dad. “Dad, I am hungry now could we get some Pizza?” I shout out to him. “Uh, sure, I was just thinking of heading out to the store to get some things, I could pick some up after that?” He reply’s making his way to the kitchen to talk to me. “Sure that sounds good.” I reply. “Have you thought of what you would like to do with the second room?” He asks putting on his jacket. “Yeah I think I would like it to be a screening and game room would that be alright?” I ask thinking it would be the best use of the space considering how much I enjoy cinema. “Of course I will get everything ready and should be all set before you start school next week. By the way do you need anything from the store?” He asks. “Um, curtains and everything related to baths please!” I chirp back in excitement. “Sure thing, see you soon sweetie.” He chuckles, placing a peck on my forehead before leaving. He is gone for around two hours and return with everything that was promised and after we ate and he hung curtains over my massive bedroom windows we are both to tired for anything else and we both say goodnight and sleep most of the day on Sunday.  The rest of the week goes by like a blur with noting much of note aside from the screen room being finished. I am currently watching one of my favourite movies Casablanca waiting for dad to return from an errand and to pick up dinner. Tomorrow I start my senior year of High School as the new girl, Yay!  “Violet! Can you come down here please!” I hear my father call.  I make my way downstairs to see that my father is standing by the front door waving for me to come outside. When I get to our driveway I notice that there is a black Toyota Corrola with the cockpit red seats I have always wanted. “Dad, this is too much!” I squeal. I am starting to smile and find the joy that has alluded me these past few months by the love and care my father continues to show me. “This is nothing I get to see you smile and you need a car to get to and from school.” He says looking content. “Thanks Dad. I love you!” I say as I hug my father. “You’re welcome Vi. I love you too. Now let’s eat and you should get to bed early so you won’t be late.” He says scooting me back into the kitchen.  As I return to my bedroom after a long relaxing bath I pick out my outfit for tomorrow, a pair of slimming black jeans, a red long sleeve shirt paired with red converse. Then I change into my pajamas and lay down on my bed and I think to myself before I drift off in my slumber that maybe this will be a good fresh start and maybe I can be happy again sometime soon.  I wake up to my alarm and get ready for school. Once I am done I make my way downstairs to get some breakfast. I look for my dad but notice a note next to what seems to be my breakfast. It tells me that he had to leave early and he wishes me a good first day. I must say I am disappointed that he is not here but I eat my breakfast anyway before grabbing my lunch money and everything I need before heading out the door and making my way towards the school.  As I pull up I notice quite a few cars in the parking lot and a number of student hanging around on the steps of the school. I park my car at the car end of the lot and gather my things before stepping out of my car. As I turn around to check that I have everything in my bag I hear someone shout. “MATE”
