Chapter 15
Tala Hill
I could not believe what I heard. If I understood correctly, they say that Mayari would bring them to the place they were searching for. The place where other werewolves live peacefully.
“Moon Goddess?” Mayari asked, confused.
“Yes. They say that during the war, the silver emperor decided that the only way to stop the bloodshed was to find a safe place for all werewolves. But not all werewolves were able to go with him. So he made a back-up plan. His witch friend helped him to make a spell, a spell that could bring the others to this place. That’s the reason why the spell was formed and it was called the moon goddess. And you are that moon goddess, Maya,” Shaun continued.
I heard about the silver emperor. They said he was the silver wolf who led the rebellion of the werewolves against the vampires. This is said to be the strongest of all werewolves.
”How are you even sure that there is such a place? Or if that moon goddess thing is real?” I question him. “Are you sure that the information you got is correct? That it was not just some rumor?”
“It’s not just a rumor,” said Chester, beginning to get annoyed. “All the information regarding the place and the moon goddess came out from the silver emperor before they disappeared. To give hope to other werewolves that were not able to come with them,” he explained.
“How did you know that what you were looking for was here in Rome? Don’t tell me you smelled Maya all the way from wherever you came from?” I asked again.
“We managed to trace the tracks of the witch who helped the silver emperor. And she brought us here,” Shaun replied.
Looking back at Maya. I saw concern in her eyes. “But I don't know how to help you,” she said. “I don’t know how I could bring you to this place,” she added.
I looked at the three men in front of us. “Do you know how?"
“Sadly, no,” answered Shaun. “We don’t even know where to start,” he added.
“But we could figure it out along the way,” Tyron said enthusiastically. “So come with us, Maya. You can help us.”
Various scenarios suddenly entered my brain hearing Tyron’s words. I knew how kindhearted Maya was, with a little persuasion they might get her to agree. I couldn’t let that happen. It will be too dangerous for her. I had to protect Mayari.
I should have done it a lot sooner, getting me and Maya out of here. But I got sidetracked. I forgot what I was supposed to do. All of that was because of the strange feelings that Shaun was bringing to life in me.
But that was all over. I won’t let myself forget again. I stood up and took a deep breath before doing what I had decided.
“Excuse me,” I said, my voice was full of determination. I let my magic flow. Strong gusts of wind blew. I held out my hand to the three men and they sprang away. Then I put my hand on the window, the glass shattered due to the force of the wind then I held Maya's hand.
“Tala! What are you doing?” she asked
“What I should have done yesterday,” I said before pulling her up and jumped out the window. I heard the voice of Shaun calling my name, echoing through the wind. I didn’t know how I did it but I managed to control the wind enough to fly us back to the academy. It was the first time I had ever done it. Although it did make the weather a little bit windy but at least, we're back home, safe.
“Where were you these past days? You suddenly disappeared, we thought you two had been kidn*pped. We can’t contact your Aunt. We don’t know who to call when you were gone,” said the director of the academy. The look of concern in her eyes was a sore eye for me. “What really happened?”
I felt sorry because I might lie again.
I glanced at my sister, she just bowed and did not speak. I looked back at the acting headmistress. “We don’t know either. We just woke up in front of the academy, with no memories of these past days,” I said. “Maybe when the headmistress is back she could help us. But for now, we just want to rest. Can we go back to the dormitory?”
The director sighed. “Okay, you could go back but we still need to talk about this some other time,” she said.
“Yes, Ma'am,” I simply answered.
We both stood up and left the director’s office.
“You lie so easily, Tala,” Mayari said softly as we walked down the hallway. She seems distant to me after what I did.
“I couldn’t possibly tell her what really happened,” I said.
Mayari stopped walking. “Was it really okay that we just leave them alone?” she asked, feeling guilty leaving the werewolves.
I stopped and looked at her. “I can’t let them take you, Maya. Even for any other reason. It would be too dangerous,” I replied.
Mayari was not happy with what I said. “But they need my help. They have been searching for this place for God knows how long. Only I can take them to that place,” she argued.
I shook my head. “Maya, they don't even know how you can help them. They don’t even know how this moon goddess thing works. So what, you're just going to join them without even knowing what to do and where to go?” I asked, feeling tired. I don't want to argue with her. I just wanted to protect her. Why can’t she understand that?
Honestly, I was still skeptical about the whole paradise of werewolves thing. Especially the moon goddess. But doubting them would be unfair to those guys, especially after what they did. They did everything they could to protect us, especially Maya. Believing them was the least thing I could do.
“But, Tala—”
“Maya, no. Listen to me. I know what I'm doing. I’m trying to protect you.”
“From what?” Her voice started to get high. I see anger in her eyes.
“Those vampires that attacked us, they weren’t there by chance. They were there for us, for you,” I whispered in irritation. They might hear us.
The surprise on Maya's face was obvious. She was shocked about what I said. “W-Why would they be after us?” she asked again. She was confused, shaking her head. “Don't lie to me, Tala.”
“No. I am not lying to you. What happened ten years ago, when our father died,” I said, clenching my hand. I pushed back all the memories that were threatening to escape, and I forced myself to say what needed to be said. “W-When that vampire killed him, that . . . that vampire said that he will come back. He will come back and get you. I would bet my life that the master of those coldbloods who attacked us yesterday is that . . . that p- pureblood. He might as well be here to take you!” I looked at her, fear starting to show in her golden brown eyes. “This academy is the only safe place for you. It has been protecting us for these past years. Look what happened when we went out, vampires attacked us! This is the safest place for you,” I explained.
“How was that b-vampire able to tell you that he needs me?” Maya asked, her voice starting to break. “Y-you told me, when the vampire attacked our house before, you managed to hide in the tunnel before he did see, didn't you?”
A bitter smile flashed across my lips. “I lied. I’m sorry.”
She bit her lower lip and continued walking without saying anything to me.
“Maya,” I called. She stopped and turned to face me, a sad smile on her face. “What problem?” I asked.
“You never trust me with the truth, Tala. That is the problem.”
“I am just protecting you. Knowing about it will just make you worry. Our father just died, we are stuck with an aunt, we don’t know anything about her. I don’t want to add more concerns for you to handle.”
“I am your sister, Tala. Not some fragile porcelain doll. It’s my right to know what happened that night. It’s my right to worry about you.”
“Maya—”
“Don't come after me. I just need to be alone for a while,” she said before leaving me completely.
I just sighed and looked at the vast sky. I could never put Maya in the kind of nightmare I experienced that night. She can get over sulking but she cannot recover from that night’s nightmare. I will protect her, Father. Just like I promised.
