Betrayal.
“Finally,” Gwendolyn breathed out, staring at her reflection in the dressing mirror.
The white bodycon V-neck gown hugged her curves, ending just above her knees, accentuating her elegance.
Gwendolyn’s jet-black hair was flawlessly styled into a sleek ponytail, not a strand out of place.
As Gwendolyn gazed at her reflection, a soft blush crept onto her cheeks, warmthh blooming beneath her skin.
Today, Gwendolyn Preston was getting engaged to Louis Bradford, the second son of his influential family.
She had been engaged to him for five years, and now Louis had finally decided to hold an engagement ceremony where he planned to officially propose to Gwendolyn.
“After a long wait, I’m finally getting engaged to the love of my life,” Gwendolyn said, swaying her hips from side to side, admiring how the white sleeveless bodycon gown accentuated her curves.
Gwendolyn fell in love with Louis during the very first day she set her eyes on him. To her, it was love at first sight..
And a month later, Louis finally begun to reciprocate her feelings.
Sigh!
With a final glance at her flawless figure, she grabbed her small white handbag and stepped out of the room.
Gwendolyn heels clicked softly against the floor as she made her way down the hallway toward the next room—her stepsister Calista’s.
‘Since Calista was the one who bought this dress for me, it would be nice to surprise her,’ Gwendolyn thought, a chuckle escaping her lips.
She could already picture the look of awe on her sister’s face when she sees her in it.
With that thought, Gwendolyn pushed open Calista’s door and stepped inside. Her eyes swept across the room—but Calista was nowhere to be found.
Where could she have gone? Gwendolyn wondered, shutting the door behind her as she took a few more steps into the room.
Just as she reached Calista’s walk-in closet, the faint sound of approaching footsteps echoed in the distance, growing closer with each passing second.
Quickly, Gwendolyn slipped into the walk-in closet, shutting the door just enough to hide herself.
A playful grin tugged at her lips as she pressed her face gently against the door of the walk-in closet, waiting to surprise Calista the moment she opened it.
After a minute had passed, the entrance door to Calista’s room creaked open.
“Babe, we have to be quick before they start looking for you,” Calista purred, her hands wrapping around the neck of a man standing beside her.
’Does Calista have a boyfriend?’ Gwendolyn’s mind raced, her eyes widening in disbelief as she pressed herself closer to the closet door, struggling to see the face of the young man, but she was unable to, since his back was turned on her.
‘So, the reason Calista’s been acting so sneaky these past months is because she has a man?’
Gwendolyn couldn’t help but shake her head in amusement, the smile at her lips growing wide with each passing second.
She was genuinely happy for her sister, glad that Calista had finally found someone.
But that didn’t mean she wouldn’t have a little fun teasing her for keeping the relationship a secret.
Meanwhile, without warning, Calista leapt into the arms of the young man, who instantly wrapped his arms around her waist.
“I’ve missed you, babe,” he purred in a low, intimate whisper as he effortlessly lifted her toward the bed.
With a grin, he tossed Calista onto the soft surface, and she let out a delighted chuckle, spreading her arms wide. “Come on, baby. Make me yours,” she said, her voice dripping with excitement.
The young, handsome man climbed onto the bed on all fours, his movements slow and deliberate as he caged Calista in his arms.
He lean towards her ear as he whispered softly with a seductive voice, “Your wish is my command, babe,” he purred before planting a gentle kiss on her neck.
Gwendolyn, still hidden in the walk-in closet, could only hear fragments of the exchange.
The words were so low, so intimate, that she could barely make out what the man was saying.
Although Gwendolyn bit her lower lip, a mischievous grin tugging at her face as she slowly tried to open the door, intending to record her sister’s moment to tease her later.
But as Gwendolyn slide her head past the slightly opened door, her eyes went wide in shock.
It was Louis. And he was passionately kissing Calista.
What! Gwendolyn thought to herself, her heart sinking as a wave of heartbreak washed over her.
She blinked rapidly, struggling to process the scene before her.
’Why… why would Calista do this?’ Gwendolyn whispered inwardly, tears welling up in her eyes as they slowly began to fall.
Her chest ached, the weight of betrayal crushing her in silence.
Today was supposed to be her engagement day, but the two people she never expected to betray her were now doing the unthinkable.
Calista, her stepsister who Gwendolyn love so deeply, was wrapped in a passionate embrace with the man Gwendolyn had dreamed of spending the rest of her life with.
Everything felt like a nightmare, a cruel twist of fate.
Anger, disgust, and a deep, aching sense of betrayal surged within Gwendolyn, each emotion more overwhelming than the last.
“This… this can’t be happening,” Gwendolyn mumbled, her breath shallow and shaky as she decided to step out of the walk-in closet.
Just as Gwendolyn was about to fully push the door open, her eyes froze.
Louis pulled away from Calista neck and he pressed his lips to hers in a fleeting kiss and seconds later, he pulled away from the kiss.
“If it weren’t for my parents’ request that I marry a woman with high social status, I wouldn’t want anything to do with your sister, Gwendolyn,” he spat, his face twisted in a sneer. “Today should’ve been about you and me, Calista, not your ugly-ass sister,” he added, the venom in his words cutting deeper than Gwendolyn ever thought possible.
She felt the world around her start to spin.
The betrayal hit her like a punch to the gut, her body trembling as her knees buckled beneath her.
Gwendolyn stumbled backwards, her heart hammering in her chest as her breath became shallow.
She collapsed to the ground, her hands instinctively reaching out to steady herself against the cold, hard floor.
Gwendolyn’s vision blurred as her entire life, her future, her dreams—all of it—flashed before her eyes.
The images came in a chaotic rush: the moments she’d spent with Louis, the promises they’d made to each other, the quiet hope she’d nurtured for years, and now—this.
The cruel, unthinkable betrayal.
Calista chuckled due to the words of Louis, her fingers tracing the edges of his jaw before cupping his face, pulling him closer as she planted a light, teasing kiss on his lips.
“You don’t have to get all worked up, babe,” she purred, her eyes glinting with a calculated edge. “Besides, you’re marrying her for the company—your parents promised you.”
Calista smile grew darker, more mischievous. “Once you’re married, take over the company, and once I turn twenty two, divorce her… and then, then you’ll be with me.” She leaned in, her voice a whisper, as if sealing their twisted pact.
Louis’s parents had made a rule: whichever of their sons married first—and to a woman with high social standing—would inherit the family company.
Louis was determined to beat his siblings to it, and that prompted him to craft the perfect plan.
He needs to get married to Gwendolyn and after some months later, he would divorce her.
Currently, Calista’s words made Louis chuckle. He gently poked her nose with his finger, a playful glint in his eyes as he winked.
“You’re so smart, babe, and that’s exactly why I love you,” he purred, his voice rich with affection.
Gwendolyn gasped.
She could hear the faint echoes of her own heartbeat in her ears, louder than the thoughts racing through her mind.
‘How could they do this to me?’ she thought, the question repeating over and over, but no answers came.
Tears began to pool in her eyes, slipping down her cheeks as the weight of it all crushed her.
Her breath caught in her throat as the reality settled in—the life she had planned for so long was slipping through her fingers like sand. And there was nothing she could do to stop it.
