I am the prize

Ines's P.O.V I almost lost balance, staggering home and no matter how much I tried, I couldn't. I couldn't get rid of the thoughts that lingered in my head nor could I stop the events of earlier from replaying in my head. Most importantly, Dashiell’s words kept replaying in my head. As soon as he was done with the call, I noticed how much he was trying to hide the distress that was evident on his face as he shot me a glare. "I will get to the root of all this and no matter what happens, I want you to stay away from Lucas! Till I sort things out, then you should stay away from trouble" Slowly, he leaned forward. "If you mess things up by not keeping a low profile and if you ruin things further, then I promise to kill you with my bare hands!" He threatened in a conspiratorial whisper. I heaved an exasperated sigh, jerking my head to the back in a bid to hide the tears that threatened to fall. "Lucas," I muttered through gritted teeth. "I promise that I will be the end of you" I gulped down the bottle of beer in my hands before I slammed it against the wall in anger. Slowly, I crouched down, staring at my house from afar and before I knew it, the tears that I tried so much to hide began to cascade down my cheeks. If only I hadn't met Lucas, maybe I wouldn't be in this situation at the moment. Mist clouded my eyes and I attempted to get up when I heard a voice that caused my heart to slam against my ribcage. I froze instantly! I knew that voice and most importantly, I knew that man. I marshaled the last bit of strength inside of me and stood up but before I could even take a single step, he placed his hands on my shoulder and turned me in a spin, in a way that I had to come face to face with him. I stared daggers at him even though my heart palpitated with fear– fear of what he would do to me! "Let go of me!" I screamed, attempting to shove his hands off but his grip around my shoulders was firm as his fiery eyes bore into my soul. "What was the ludicrous stunt that you pulled there earlier?" His voice was so calm and eerie that it caused me to shudder. "Leave me alone, Lucas!" He scoffed before he smirked in a way that caused his lips to curl on both sides. "Did you honestly think that I would remain in the police cell? My best friend, Dashiell, the same man that you want to scam, bailed me out!" He patted my cheeks before he poked me on the head. "Ines, get that into your little head and if you have a little piece of conscience remaining inside of you, then you will tell the truth to the whole world and you will apologize to me for ruining my image" He snapped at me. Finally, I managed to shove his hands off me and fired back at him. "Such a disappointment! I should have commanded grandfather to have fed you to the dogs!" All of a sudden, Lucas burst into a peal of hysterical laughter that did nothing but trigger all of the senses in my head. "Grandfather? You must be delusional!" Then he continued. "You must be amazed by the fact that you want to steal another person's life. You dare call him your grandfather? Have you forgotten that you were birthed by people even poorer than a church rat!" My fingers clenched. "At least they are responsible and have managed to instill good morals into their two daughters. However, I can't say the same for you because you are the epic evidence of a failed background!" He gripped my arm swiftly. "Repeat that word!" "Only a fool will answer you. I am going to get married to your best friend Dashiell and you are going to do nothing about it!" I pushed him off me and walked hastily towards my house but the sound of footsteps that intensified behind me showed that he was after me. All of a sudden, he grabbed me by the wrist, almost knocking me to the ground. "What do you want from me....." Before I could complete my words, he swooned me into a hug and despite my attempts to push him off me, I couldn't. "What do you want from me?" I screamed! "Leave me alone right now or else, I will call the cops" He tightened his hands around me. "Ines, you can't marry Dashiell. I know that I have hurt you but you can't marry my best friend. Dashiell is like my brother and you know how much I love you" "I apologize for the scene I caused and for the names that I called you. I love you so much and instead of getting married to Dashiell, you should marry me!" He said. Without hesitation, I struggled to free myself from his forceful grasp before staring at him in utter disbelief. "I should marry you?" He bobbed his head. "Yes. I am expecting this money but in the meantime, you can lend me some money that I will use in conducting the wedding" My lips parted and I was at a loss for words to say. For a moment, it made me wonder if he blindfolded me from seeing how much of a red flag he was. My chest heaved and I lashed out at him. "You are stupid! Maybe you are that slow-witted and can't read my face, then I will spell it out to you, I Am Done With You!" Before I could leave, Lucas dragged me back and he pushed me so badly that he slammed my back against the wall. I winced in pain. His shadow lingered over me as he closed the space between us, staring at me with eyes blazing with fury. He grabbed my jaw forcefully in a way that made me face him. "It seems that you are forgetting something. I am the one who asked you out and I will be the one to be done with you! Not you!" Shivers coursed through my spine as I gulped in fear. "Plus why are you reacting like this? You love me Ines and stop acting like I am the first man to have ever cheated! Why would you expect me not to cheat when you don't have my time and you are always working!" I cried. "I was working for us. Are you trying to blame me for your mistakes?” “Working for us? You barely had my time and how much have you even given me for you to talk to me with so much pride? A lot of women buy cars for their men but you have done nothing for me!” My mouth slackened in shock, trying to fathom how in the world I fell in love with a lunatic like him. “ Anyway, I forgive you for making me cheat on you. Prepare to get married to me next weekend," Lucas said with so much audacity that I couldn't just comprehend what was happening. He continued. "Lend me the money for your wedding dress and my groom's suit. I promise to pay you back but let's get married first,” Tears sprang up in my eyes and instead of crying, I burst into a peal of hysterical laughter that hurt me down to the guts of my stomach. I wasn't laughing because of his words but I was laughing because of how I became a fool for him, a puppet that he could control. Slowly, he tucked the strand of hair that fell on my face behind my ear. "You must be laughing out of the joy that you won the prize in the end," I scoffed. "What prize?" He leaned in, whispering. "Me! Your soon-to-be husband."
